I typed "does everyone stare police" into the search field; didn't think it would be here. Thank you so much! This is a Stuart Copeland song... and it holds up over time... Many police songs that I loved in the 80s don't impress me anymore. This one impresses me MORE today. Those insane piano chords. The crazy harmony intervals. And the lyrics that perfectly capture the horrible feeling of romantic awkwardness.
My favourite band forever, ever since I was a kid listened to them & that Copeland remains my favourite all time drummer. NEVER ever heard any drummer like him, so complex and graceful. He has everything a drummer would ever dream of.
this blows me away evrytime i hear it.... i was a police fan when i was 9 years old , and my mum got me this for xmas in 1979... i couldn't believe the tracks on regatta de blanc , they were so good and never played on the radio !!! the beds too big withyou , bring on the night etc etc... i never get tired of this
This is such a good song, but let's not forget about the actual video portion (or slideshow if one prefers) done here. Dude, you make this incredible song even more fantastic with the pics! A fine, classy selection of ladies that no man and probably no woman would argue! Had the band souped up something along these lines back in that horror time period known as the late 70's early 80's music video era, it could have actually worked! Nice job!
I remember buying Reggatta De Blanc for my 13th birthday i went to my friends house to play the album and this song just stood out i just love it. My favourite Policeman wrote it and sang the first verse he had me hooked. Leni. ;o)
Yes, an amazing track. First heard it in 79-80. Played it while summing up the courage to ask a girl out. Still is haunting and beautiful The pictures are a nice touch especially like Franke Potent
That wasn't a deliberate sample. The wires strewn across the studio accidentally picked up a radio signal (of an opera) and it recorded itself onto the tape there and then....in perfect time. [Sting & Stewart have re-counted this story many times]. A little like the accidental piano chord played by Sting's bum when he backed into the piano as he was about to start recording the vocals for Roxanne....in perfect time. He laughed at this.....which was also recorded through the mike in the vocal booth at it was left on the final recorded version. Thank you Nigel Gray.
i like this track so much that I've tried 2 sample the instrumental yrs ago but it was too difficult so i grabbed my rm1x n reinvented it with a hint of hip-hop. Good stuff
I love this song too Jools! One of my faves by them but it seemed to be overlooked by most folks. Hillarious, creative lyrics! And the thing is, all of us dudes have met at least one woman in our lives-no matter how confident we may be-who absolutely does this to us! Nice slide show, thanks for sharing Brother. Peace!
Behold the only recorded duet featuring band leader Stewart accompanied by Sting. 40 years on and we still haven’t been able to identify the opera singer whose voice was used as the link in the middle of the track
Meine erste Freundin brachte mal in den späten 80ern die regatta de blanc LP z mir nachhause. Es wurde zu einer meiner lieblingsplatten und dieses lied zum lieblingslied der LP. i love it
dear jools, one of my favourite songs and one of the most consequent songs of The Police. and i do share your taste espiacially monica and the french one in the last third. i think it's a good approach..~ alexander.
That's Nina Persson from The Cardigans at the end :-) Anyway, I remember thinking how odd it was to hear a piano song on a Police record, back then. But that made it even more special really :-)
@DiazdelVivar i remember i tried playin this in my piano (and i never went to music school) it sounds so simple yet very difficult to play...but i tried again and again thats how much i liked it!
this is a very ingenious song, for a rock song... long time ago I tried hard to know its chords... in some part the bass play the note Eb and the piano G Mayor and later the bass Bb and the piano again GM... that's pretty crazy, and sounds right!! never understood the words, except some parts of course... working on my english
This is a great song that I've been listening to since the early 1980 (or, whenever it came out); but, this is also a great video. You should list the names of these stunning ladies! So far, near the ending, I've seen Hayley Mills and Monica Bellucci. Whom are the rest? :)
thx 4 posting this but i don't like staring at women so the pictures i don't look at. i like this song cuz i always get stared at living here in winona, mn. I love that Sting is playing the piano on this & i wish i could find the video. he doesn't think he is a good piano player but i am an ivory tickler also & i think he did just fine.
@Nedasnothere who said anything about lust? are you saying no-one falls in love with beautiful women, just ordinary looking ones? and by unobtainable I meant the feeling of inadequacy he has when he is with the girl, he feels he is going to fail or mess it up
The whole point of the song is that she is most likely not a world-class beauty, she's probably ordinary looking. When he asks if everyone stares, the answer is probably, "no". But it's his immense love for her that makes him feel that the answer is, "yes". "My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun..." Get it?
@redfishradical thanks for watching, and I'm glad you got the point of the slide show, those women that just turn you into a useless idiot. take care bro
did u hear Pavrotti singing on this? i was shocked to find out & then i wiki'd Pav & he is also a libra like sting!!!! thus the voice...kudos to boat of u's...LOL
I've always dug this track and I thought I was the only person ever who did. I think this is about a potential stalker. Defintely a really paranoid, insecure guy. What lets the song down is the versus which kind of lead nowhere. Having said that I've learnt to love them :)

Monica.. ohhhhhh..erm.. hi...erm.. my name is.. oops, I'm standing on your... thingie.. there.. erm.. hi, I'm... erm... yeh, er.... you want a... oh, you... you have one... I was just.. Just... er... yeh... yeh. See ya! yeh... yep. yeh
I thought at first this was some chick posting pics of herself and thought how lame it was. Then I saw it was some dude doing a slide show for the boys and suddenly it seemed OK for some reason. I dunno. Might watch it again.
@jools182 I'm sorry but I'm afraid you jools182 are the "numb nuts". milkbun7 is right. This is a love song, not a lust song. To be honest, the video annoyed me a little too. You listen to the lyrics. The woman is not unattainable. They go out on a date so she's not a movies star on a screen. It's his feelings of inadequacy that make him ask the question.
Reggatta de Blanc...one of all-time favorite albums...every song. I love all of their albums though.
My desert island album

very underated police track, shame cause i think its brilliant
My favourite band forever, ever since I was a kid listened to them & that Copeland remains my favourite all time drummer. NEVER ever heard any drummer like him, so complex and graceful. He has everything a drummer would ever dream of.
One of the best Police tunes ever recorded.
Still my favourite police song.... Copeland rocks
I listened to this song a lot back in mid-late 2016. This brings back so many memories.

Inspired combination of images and an incredibly under-rated piece of genius. Brings me back to 77 :)
Just fantastic..
i love the opera sample thrown in there when it transitions from the lo-fi sound to the clean sound. ah such a good band (-:

I had forgotten this great song. What a great idea for a video. Simple. Brilliant.
Simply lovely creatures! ♡

I love this album. Top notch

Stewart, best drummer in the whole, wide World :)
There are a lot of great drummers tho. But he is fer totes up in the top 5
His drumming technique and style is the most listenable!
Indeed!
Wow...this song takes me back. Thanks for posting!
carice van houten -- you´re a connoisseur!!!
Meine erste Freundin brachte mal in den späten 80ern die regatta de blanc LP z mir nachhause. Es wurde zu einer meiner lieblingsplatten und dieses lied zum lieblingslied der LP.

Great song - I love it
Stewart tu es énorme, cette chanson traverse le temps sans une ride
This rocks!

mmmm. Monica Belucci. :) Great song/album too.

Great song. Even greater eye candy.
Clem,
Absolute, ditto! I used to get my moms sandwiches boxes and nan's knitting needles and drum to everything after getting Regatta in 1979.
if the police had released this song with this video it wud have charted very very high
Believe it or not this song was written by Stewart Copeland. Best band ever! Some other people mentioned Miss Gradenko which was written by Copeland.
Copeland effortlessly shifts the downbeat from three in the verse to two & four during the chorus.
Copeland tune fuckin beast love it
great taste for music, and great taste for women (Marion Cotillard is an angel). I love this song, did they ever played it live?
this is a very ingenious song, for a rock song... long time ago I tried hard to know its chords... in some part the bass play the note Eb and the piano G Mayor and later the bass Bb and the piano again GM... that's pretty crazy, and sounds right!! never understood the words, except some parts of course... working on my english
@4bdemon666 i think you're right. i uploaded it on my mp3player
This is a great song that I've been listening to since the early 1980 (or, whenever it came out); but, this is also a great video.

+classiclistener01 At the beginning are a number of stills of Marion Cotillard and towards the end another French beauty Audrey Tatou.
+classiclistener01 all listed now
+Declan Cox all listed now
+jools182 Awesome! Thank you for your effort in doing that! :)
Thanks man !
well said my man.

who's the girl in the first few pictures?
amazing song, have the police box set, just discovered this song on it today.
Marion Cotillard
Copeland entre los 3 top de baterías.
También es muy buena Murder by numbers.
Franka, does everyone stare this way at you? Run Lola, run to me!
Also, Has anyone ever noticed the slip up on the piano at 1:03?
reminds me of how awkward I sometimes feel...
Monica B. is the real thing
It’s ironic. People spend their entire lives searching for lost treasure and all they had to do is buy Regatta de Blanc
***** How did you knew about that recording event? That's cool because that is one of the things I most like of this song.
@Nedasnothere
who said anything about lust?
are you saying no-one falls in love with beautiful women, just ordinary looking ones?
and by unobtainable I meant the feeling of inadequacy he has when he is with the girl, he feels he is going to fail or mess it up
Does everyone listen to the police?
Me of course. For ages!

Ohhhhhhh soool
"I changed my clothes 10 times before I take you on a date", that's genius lol
I've always dug this track and I thought I was the only person ever who did. I think this is about a potential stalker. Defintely a really paranoid, insecure guy. What lets the song down is the versus which kind of lead nowhere. Having said that I've learnt to love them :)
No it isn't
It's a fkng love song.

2:48 Run Lola Run?
GROSSARTIG!
Marion Cotillard.
Fascination mystifies me. All I can think is poor fool too bad it wasn't a cupcake. But that being said thx 4 the vid. :)
Love the song but the first chick in this slide show looks like she's about to pass out from malnutrition.
@bluematter Neither Monica Belucci nor Franka Potente appear to me to be malnourished. You're over-generalizing.
@youpatrikduncan Monica Bellucci
wil you ever forgive me?
for the shape i'm in
for
the
shape
I'm
in...
listen to the lyrics of the song, numb nuts
the song is from the point of view of a man obsessed with an unobtainable woman
because not everyone has the same taste
get it?
any photos?
So my friend thinks this is my themesong... Any thoughts on the explanation? :o
Who's the girl at 1:06 and 1:13?
WHo's at :56?
1:54 Who IS that?
Ahh yes the high maintenance woman.
Who's the chick at 0.10 please
Marion Cottilard

Questa canzone è stupenda, la voce di Sting è molto sexy, ma l'accostamento con le foto non mi piace!
why chicks? I WANT STEWART,STING,ANDY
Cause explains itself. Listen closer!
ok she's a lil hottie
