- This was a typical Boat Dive into the waters of Garajau National Park, only a 15 to 20 minute boat ride from the Madeira Divepoint operation based at the Pestana Carlton Hotel.
The dive was lead by Miguel Santos, a most competent instructor and dive guide who always manages to find the best of the wildlife for you to see.
I'd forgotten how good this dive was, Miguel found just about every bit of wildlife and the friendliest Dusky Grouper to play with.
Other dive sites that Madeira Divepoint can take you to are:
Hotel Carlton and Hotel Palms House Reefs. Both have an exceptional variety of marine life and scenery.
Club Naval offers a wide variety of eel species and some great canyons to mooch about in.
Lazaretto and Lazaretto North have some great Boulder fields with all of the usual fish and occasionally some large rays.
Arena has a large sandy area that if you are lucky can have some huge Butterfly & Eagle Ray, and the occasional Dusky Grouper that might be at a cleaning station. There's also some of the unfriendliest Trigger Fish you would ever like not to meet (depending on if they are nesting or not).
'T' Reef has a minimum of 3 species of Mooray Eel as well as Triggers, Damsels, Scorpion fish and plenty of Bream.
There are a few other Dive Sites that I can't remember the names of but there's nearly always a great choice to suit the weather and sea conditions.
There's also the wreck of the Bowbelle, that as a result of illegal sand dredging is the only shipwreck that I know of that has sunk twice, it used to reside at a maximum depth of ~33 Meters, it now sits at a minimum depth of ~35 Meters, so that's only a real diving option for the technical divers now.
The Wreck of the Corvette 'Afonso' is a retired Portuguese Corvette, it was placed very precisely on the sea bed and sits at a maximum depth of 32 Meters, it is an awesome safe playground for divers and fish life alike, this wreck has been prepared to offer every level of diver the safest wreck penetration dive experience.
