After seeing a 90 brake a rear shock about 20 years ago I always carry one front and one rear shock in my 90. I've seen the top or bottom brake off, the folding in half bit in this video is new to me.
Old Man Emu shocks were useless on my Landcruiser 60 series. On an outback road they overheated and lost there shock absorbing ability. A switch to Konl shocks fixed the problem. They were just as good 10 years later when I sold the car.
I had Koni Raid on my Defender. Drove them across the desert a few times, up the Cape and the High Country and they were great. What I learnt about remote travel in Australia was first get good tyres, then get good suspension. Both will be punished.
Hair looks great mate.. should keep it like that.. Very rock and roll.. Maybe when this Corona viruses is over you might like to come out and overland the USA. I have done some parts and there is a lot more to see. It's not as remote as Australia. But it has some very cool places to check out.

You can see by the rub mark on the upper inner shock tube it has been getting pushed side ways for quite a while Failure probably caused by the loose Y frame bolts Have seen this happen before
OME have a terrible reputation with the Jeep wrangler guys, and as I see in the comments we weren't the only one's to complain. I had Teraflex shocks fail on my JK and replaced them with Fox shocks and never had a problem after. Didnt have the JK long enough after that to tell you how they are doing unfortunately.
Overall have you found your 110 300tdi to be reliable put on your bush travels Bret? They may be high maintenance but i don't think I could ever part with mine 👍
Mines the 200tdi. Overall, yes reliable. The majority of the issues I've had over 14 years while travelling could be fixed on the track. Just keep the maintenance up. I'm keeping mine a good many more years.
While riding around the world my wife blew both her front shocks. The culprit was tar sprayed from abroad crew got in between the seals and set the scene of a total failure.
From an engineering point of view, your spring height may need looking at if they're reaching the end of their travel on washouts. Whilst Defenders are well known for needing spring retainers on full travel, you really shouldn't be getting there on that type of track. Hope the current fix holds well for you 👍

Outback mechanics rubbish heaps are infested with the yellow waste. I think we all agree Koni heavy duty shocks are the standard for serious explorers (I refuse to use the word overlanding as is means nothing today). Perhaps OME was ok many years ago before imbeciles starting building monuments to themselves and began to make their grand edifices heavier.
Keep the long hair dude, it looks awesome. Plus I find these videos really educational.

Hello from Southern California! I had two sets of OME struts fail on my Toyota Tacoma. One overextended and the others leaked oil.

The A frame bolts only rattled loose after driving without the shock. The wear may have been from the 30m or so I travelled before stopping to check.

No new mods, and yes a daily commuter. Just remove boxes and its back to a normal car.

I changed to Koni's with dislocation cones. NO problems since.
