I am interested in buying a used NES. I live in Australia and we use PAL and the one I want to buy is NTSC. If I do these steps can I use the NES with no problems?
My American cousin brought over Kung Fu from the US when he came to visit in 1985 and we tried it on my PAL Nes but it just flashed on and off. If this method is the same for the British NES then I wish I had known this hack back then. We tried for days to try and get this to work on my PAL nes 😮
Yeah, my sister lived in the USA. She wished to send me over some cool and cheap NES cartridges but she heard that they will not run on PAL consoles. Game Boy cartridges worked in all regions!
yup i did exactly EVERYTHING that you did, even used a smaller pair of pliers to bend the pin and now iv'e got just a grey screen, no blinking red light, whether there is a game in or not......great.
What about a European NES with a 3195A-chip? Can I unlock that consol in the same way in order to play american games? And is it the same pin (4th from the left), that I have to give "the ultimate snip"?
@@royk007 Thanks, but I already did it and it worked. However, there are still some american games, that CANNOT be played properly on this console. The game "Friday the 13th" for example shows a weird graphical anomaly on the upper part of the screen. So I guess, I'm gonna have to buy an american NES too.
I boiled my 72 pin and deep cleaned everything I could. Snipping this lil connector finished the job. My original 1986 NES is working 99.9%….just needing to do the usual tricks to get the cartridge working as I did as a 7 year old. Thanks to all you modders and hackers!
Thanks for posting this. Your video made me laugh as I'm about to do the same thing today to my old nes... and am also borrowing my wife's craft clippers. Wanted to brush up on it before I did it. My energy is about where yours is here and my wife's is on par with the female voice in this video, haha - only for me it's Blaster Master and POW ;)
It absolutely did! That's not to say there aren't some games that require a little finessing into the perfect position... but there's not one in my collection I can't get working (got 17 games... slowly working on the collection when I see a deal ;))
Worth adding that I threw in a new 72 pin connector before this circuitcision took place... there were about 10 of those 17 that I couldn't get to work for the life of me.... constant blinking screen. But once the leg was snipped... they are all working with a little tlc! :-D

That's pretty interesting. I don't have an NES, but I'm not too bothered in doing that myself, despite some US-exclusive games.

Usually a sign the game is loose or its not in properly. Your cart slot could probably be loose from the board too as you took it apart

To disable the lock out chip in my nes I used the smallest flathead screwdriver 🪛 I had and slowly and carefully pulled the pin out.
