Hey Mike, as someone who has installed wood siding for 16 years, do not start the T&G upstairs. Start at the bottom and go up. Otherwise you will have a difficult time at the stairwell where downstairs meets upstairs.

@@RamblinRoadies I agree! Mike, start at the bottom & work your way up. If you don't want to do all the bottom area, at least do all the walls where the staircase is located, which would then allow you to keep the alignment of the panelling going to the upstairs.

That stuff is a breeze to put up but man if it's not a pain to stock upstairs. All the diffrent lengths make you restack it as you carry it. Still the way to go!

    Mike...
You're absolutely amazing ! Have you stopped lately and thought about all the "irons" you have in the fire ? I realize that no one has the attention to detail that you have... but you have a concrete floor to pour in the pavilion, an addition to the pavilion to shelter equipment, a floor to pour, and a kiln to build, a cabin, bath house, and connecting hallway to finish, a pond to clean out, and you've talked about another larger wood shed plus a barn out in the clearing !!! You're just amazing !!! Take care Mike... stay healthy !!!

I'm glad you enjoyed your trip to my neck of the woods and trilled to know some Michigan made and grown red pine T&G will adorn the cabin walls. You may have to invest in a molder/shaper for that developing blue stain pine in the wood yard. Looking forward to the work at the cabin.

Hi Mike & Melissa. Marriage is a learning process. You think you know " everything." Until you " don't" know everything about your spouse. My best friend enjoys the Plain Party Mix at Tractor Suppy stores. Usually one of his " Christmas present" too. I wondered that was the " major change of the cabin." I saw the tongue & groove. I wondered you would go the decision. I thought. It will be a lot time sanding each finished boards. I was ok w/ it. I did a lot of wood projects that took time. It was worth the effort. Thanks Mike & Melissa. Say Hi to Eva, Hunter, Levi, Tyler, & Hannah. Have a good Thrusday the 5th everyone. 🥰🙂😉👍❤️💜🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🌲

Mike your video yesterday was very informative . It is like hardwood flooring. I figured you were going to use it in the cabin. I like the fact that it is interlocking on the ends. I wish you would do what you said you were going to do a few years ago. You told everyone that you would show how you make the Firestarter. I live in N.E.WASHINGTON I am disabled. That is something that I could do and sell in much smaller bags to all of the camp grounds around me to help me get by. You could send me a private message or video.

Hi Mike and family, for 9 years I worked in a furniture factory, (I'm a qualified cabinmaker), plus, 12 years as a maintenace carpenter, then 13 years in charge of the maintenace workshop and 22 people covering 6 different trakes, so, I'm well aware of the need to ensure when you go somewhere to do some work, you need to make sure you have the tools you need with you. You are a practical person like me, so I was told this tip by an old-time carpenter, and it works. Make a list with the heading of what you are going to do, then, while doing the task in your head, write down the steps of what you are going to do and what tools/items you will need to carry out those steps from the start to the finish. Yes, like a check list or as they would call it now-a-days, a flowchart. Then, come the time to get things ready, you just work through the list of things making sure they're in/on your vehicle. If by chance you missed adding a tool/item, then just add it to the list for next time. Oh, 😂😂😂I get accused of driving to slow as well, but that is usually by people, like Mellssa, who are a lead foot. (Insert racing car emoyi). Keep safe and well.

I put up the same stuff in my Man cave garage… pre finished and end matched. The difference is I went with 8” wide. The stuff looks great and goes up quick. I live in West Michigan and have 21 acres of mainly Red pine. I think it was planted as part of the CCC project that Roosevelt started in 1933 they are planted in rows and look pretty cool.

Hello! 😊 Regarding the, "squeak"; get an inspection mirror and a strong light and look carefully behind the front idler where it passes close to the track frame. There is probably a small piece of crushed stone trapped in there. This happens a lot on my mini-excavator and is aggravating. To get it out try one of those pick up tools with the retractable claws on the end or try to break it up with a pin punch and hammer.

i thought i already posted this so if it shows up twice sorry..
you will love the end matched T/G which is prefinished. as a retired builder in northern michigan we have done 10-12 homes with this product. just use your cordless nailer with 18ga. 2" brads and you will have a great install with hidden fasteners. you may have a few exposed fasteners in trim areas but those can be easily filled. if it's beneficial I could e mail you several pics of past jobs. just let me know via e mail if needed. but I'm betting you already have this install figured out.

You are going to have to build a shop at the cabin, and stock it with tools so you have them at both locations. Another great video series 😀

Mike, be careful with the squeak. My neighbor had the same machine and that’s how her problems started. Just an occasional squeak that became progressively worse

Blue stain pine is a result of a fungus that develops on freshly cut pine. Blue stain pine has been a thing here in Oregon for decades and was at first thought to be caused by pine beetles, we have an infestation across the central & eastern part of our states pine forests. The dead standing beetle infested pine is naturally blue and with the addition of the beetle bore holes and runs it’s a fantastic looking finish for rustic look as you scan sand it smooth and it retains the rustic look. As a result of it’s abundance it’s relatively cheap..

Hello Mike. I'm from Northern Minnesota and the majority of wood is cut in 100" length. I helped a neighbor clear land and thats the length we cut to go to the local paper mill. Once in a while you see them cut the lenght of the semi trailer and I assume those are used for high line poles. My neighbor is a contractor and he uses a laser to to ensure everything is square and lines up. It's very noticeable on tung and groove if its not alined properly. I know that from experience. I now have a laser. 😀

Well, yes. There's old sayings, and it's even in the Bible. A wise man listens while the fool runs off at the mouth. There's others also in different categories. Dad always said my first cousin knows everything but knows nothing. He is an electronic genius. He worked in the ICU in many hospitals, doing brilliant stuff w his zipper down, or his shoes untied. He is very smart, but not a lick of common sense. We learn from our mistakes, but how much better it is to learn from other's mistakes!! I had no thought of you purchasing the pre finished tongue and groove lumber, but I did think how cool that was! I concur w you too, that will be so much faster to install, and since you're plans include building a shed, kudos to you! Nothing wasted and lots of time and work saved. You're now ahead!! You should take Levi w you to move all those boards upstairs. One on the trailer reaching the boards to the other on the upper deck. On your way back tomorrow, don't forget to stop and purchase another case of ammo. That's what I thought Melissa was going to tell us you bought. There's nothing at all wrong w you talking in your videos, you see, I'm a wise man, I learn from you. So speak till your heart's content. Your videos are always packed w good stuff. I'm always sorry the video is ending. Remember your tripods, batteries, microphone, you know, the most important tools. Thanks, Mike.👍🚜❤️🙏🇺🇲🇺🇲

Good morning Mike and Melissa. Living in southeast Michigan and going what we call up north. I was in the same area of Michigan on Wednesday baiting for the bear season in 2 weeks. We have passed by the sawmill in the past and I said I have to check it out. I will be going there now that I have seen your video. Can’t wait!
We consider anything above the Bay City area as Up North.

Yeah, in the past Red Pine wasn't considered for much. The government planted a bunch, from what I understand, and you would see stands of Red Pine here and there that no one ever touched. I mentioned previously, back when you first showed us the cabin, that when we were kids, we had a stand of Red Pine in our area that we called the school forest, because it was all these rows of trees in straight lines. It's good that they have developed some uses for it, otherwise when it grows all close together and in rows like that nothing much grows underneath.

"Southern" yellow pine is used in the "south". Great for all stages of construction. Plus, when the sap wood rots away from the stump, what is left is a great natural fire starter. Old southern farmers called it lightered.
My understanding is that blue stained wood is a product caused by wood borer damage. Sawing with Sandy (youtube) is my source. Plus I've seen evidence of this when sawing logs damaged by wood borers.😊

Mike, here in Michigan, we say if you are "up North" if you're north of the Zilwaukee bridge. So yes, you were in Northern MI by our standards. Lots of interesting stuff in that last video. Can't wait to see that stuff on the cabin walls.

Good move on the prefinished wood Mike. You would have spent weeks on finishing all of the bevels and get a final product that looks like what you bought. I've got a cabin up in northern Garrett County. Your place is not far from there. I've been going down there since the fifties. Love it down there.
