On a 996 Turbo, Range 1 overrevs (6750-7250rpm) are not a real concern (also, you'd notice if you were hitting the fuel cutoff). Range 2 overrevs (7250+) are a concern, but you *can not* get a Range 2 overrev by bouncing off the redline. Don't miss a downshift and you will be fine.

I had a similar report once from the ECU of my Lotus Exige indicating that at some point with a previous owner the engine has hit 10,100rpm. On the bright side... I know that it must be fine revving to it's 8.5k redline every now and then!

@@M_773 yeah, I can adjust boost from 12 psi all the way up to 23 psi. Makes 731 awhp on 23 psi, and 600 or so on 12 psi. But mostly even on the high boost setting, you just don't get into boost if its wet or snowy. These cars are actually quite docile if you're not in boost. Cruises around town just as well as it destroys at the track.
You got this wrong hoovie! It doesnt count when you hit the redline while accelerating und forgetting to shift. It will only count when you downshit too early and force the engine to spin faster than the limiter allows. Enjoy your car! greetings from germany
Close. It counts BOTH types of over-rev conditions. Nobody cares about the acceleration counter. Mine had thousands of them. Now the "accidentally shifted from 5th to 2nd" ignition is bad. Those will cause problems.
There are two types here is the shortest and easiest way to understand: Type I indicate bumping into the rev limiter on the way up. Type II indicate possible mis-shifts on the way down. Nobody really cares about type 1 but type 2.... could be trouble
I personally think there's some TH-cam algorithm that adds dislikes! I've seen videos that in no way could have a dislike, but there they are, disliking moms funeral!!
reminds me of the people who buy a ferrari then don't drive it because it reduces it's resell value...so why buy a car that you can't drive? They fall into the "more money than brains category".
@@muskokamike127 I'd say someone who daily drives a Ferrari is the one with more money than brains. You don't get rich by throwing away money, and driving a Ferrari to get groceries or drop your kids off at school is needlessly devaluing the car. So they don't drive it unless they have a special reason to. Nobody buys a Ferrari to keep it forever, and when the owner inevitably sells it, he's going to want to get enough from the sale to buy a new supercar without losing tens of thousands of dollars.
@@mattcelder like most morons, you take what I said and distort it to prove your point. Where did I say "daily drive"? Where did I say "get groceries"? BTW: as for the groceries comment, did you know that McLaren advertised the F1 was so manageable and roomie that you COULD use it to get groceries? Buying a ferrari and not driving it is like buying a house and never living in it, buying a big flat screen and never watching it, and if you knew anything about cars you'd know not driving a car at all is just as bad as driving it too much. BTW: just using the 2005 F430 as an example, and albeit I don't know enough about the various versions to say which is which, but the resell pricing is about half of what they were sold for. So one with 23,000 miles is listed for $98K and one with 7500 miles is listed for 115K. So by putting about 2000 miles a year and enjoying your purchase or driving it rarely at 800 miles per year works out to be about 10% of the value of the vehicle. Well, that's just stupid. Considering they weren't all that special with about 10,000 units made. Now if you have a limited production vehicle like the Enzo or something? That's a different story. But a regular production run, if you think you're sitting on a gold mine and in 20 years you're going to reap millions by having one with 2000K on it, well, you're in for a rude awakening because I see them going through BJ or Mecum all the time and it ain't a Dino.
Doug did a similar observation on the 996 Turbo, based on bang for your buck. The fried eggs headlights can be fixed with an aftermarket mask from eBay
Loved this car since day dot. My mother bought a Bluetooth And CD player in the shape of the 911 , the lights lit up when on, the hood popped open revealing the buttons.....I don’t go much on Porsche in general...but apart from this the careers GT of course haha, sorry for the ranting you gave me a hell of a nostalgic trip :D love the videos mate keep em up! Oh btw look into getting a Maloo R8 or Maloo GTS imported, the current model is the fastest production Ute/pickup ( MALOO GTS-r W1) but the 2017 Maloo are easier to get your hands on, Monster like Performance and fantastic reliability, cheap as chips. you honestly can’t go wrong!
You can drive it as hard as you want without over revving it. You can bounce off the rev limit all day and thats not an over rev. Unless you miss shift the car then it is impossible to log an over rev.
You missed the golden opportunity of transforming your orange Prius into a Halloween pumpkin. I am very disappointed and will unsubscribe immediately (from Doug DeMuro's channel). ;-)

I've owned my 2001 car for 6 years. I'm still not interested in any other cars. Maybe an electric car or a mid engine Vette could win me over. It feels so good and does everything so well.
You’re worried about hitting redline? Wouldn’t you have two options? -drive fast but don’t get close to redline -don’t sell it and enjoy the hell out of this car. Well I guess 3 options; selling it, but come on, that car looks and sounds good, surely the urge to make that engine sing and enjoy your ride is going to be there.

I'm surprised that Hoovies Garage doesn't have 1 millions Subscribers yet. You have great little adventures and fun, quirky stories with each car and video. Thanks for all that you do!
Quit worrying Hoovie! You will hurt the mezger engine more by babying it. Also, on the models with only 2 rev ranges, you don't have to worry about range 2 ignitions unless you money shift. Talk to your Porsche dealer if you don't believe me. Range one is no big deal, hitting rev limit is fine. Hitting range two is BAD but it won't happen unless you miss a shift and send rpms past 7250, which can ONLY happen from a money shift. Range one happens between 6750 and 7250 and is no big deal. Although an exorbitant amount of range one will tell a potential buyer the car may have been tracked. Please read this and enjoy your beautiful 996! I am so jealous! Also: if the vehicle is tuned, and rev limitter is increased, all bets are off. So hopefully your 996 doesn't have an ECU tune, and if it does, I would revert it back to OEM quickly.
Good job on the 996tt review. I totally agree with you, love mine. I just repaired and pinned the coolant fittings on mine. the video is on my channel. Thanks for sharing! Mine is an X50 and I got it for $33k 6 years ago, and not repairs at the time.
As a 30 something I way prefer these lights to the round beetle ones. I think as my generation ages, this will be reflected in price. Its just old people who want the round lights of their youth.
@Forever Conflicted - if you look at them, you'll notice that the Gremlin and the Pacer are basically the same car from the seats forward. It's only the back end that really changed. The Thing, to me, is notable for being one of the few cars where you can replace just about every body panel with a sheet of plywood :)
@Forever Conflicted - Which came first didn't matter. Just meant that they used the same body to start. It's much like the Ford Festiva (not the Fiesta!) and the Kia Sportage (pre 2004). If you park them side by side, you'd go "Hey, someone blew up a Festiva and called it an SUV!" They were both made by Kia, and used a lot of Mazda parts. (Family had two Festivas and I had a '98 Sportage. Loved that car.)
@Forever Conflicted - They actually were great cars, and were worth what they cost. The biggest problem they had, that we saw, was that after 150k, or if you drove the absolute crap out of them, they were prone to engine oil leaks. For the price, after 7-10 years, they generally weren't worth dropping another engine into them, or doing a full engine rebuild. Comfort wise - my 6' father could drive one comfortably, and my 5'2" mother could drive it comfortably as well. The 5 speed standard also did 50mpg through the mountains. No frame problems, no body problems, no weird suspension problems - just the usual for age. Most of their parts were interchangeable with my Mazda 323 at the time. I suspect that their bad reputation came from people that bought cheap, drove hard, and then complained about them not being the same quality build as a car that cost twice as much. My folks bought two of them - one four, and one five speed - for the cost of one higher quality car. My brother burned out the engine in the 4 speed, but it still took him 4-5 years, and the 5 speed lasted another two or three years beyond that. (he tried to get the engine reworked, but the people he paid to do it did a terrible job and even warped the head. I suspect they tried to bluff their way through it, but it was NOT a standard iron engine. )
@Forever Conflicted - That's one of the reasons I'm driving a 2007 Pontiac Vibe. I bought a 2003 Vibe _in_ 2003 from a car rental company - for about half of what it was new. I then bought this 2007 as a replacement, for $4025, cash, with less than 140k miles. I drove past the moon in the first one, I've put two years on this one, and I figure I have another two to four years, minimum, before worrying about a replacement. It's a Toyota Corolla frame, engine, seats, and most of the rest of it. With a Pontiac badge. For yours - headliners aren't expensive to replace, an ozone generator can be bought for less than $75 that's good enough for small projects like a car, and the parts are readily available to fix just about anything on that vehicle. Rockauto.com can be your friend. See if you can borrow a carpet cleaner for a weekend, as well.
Wise words Hoovey, you have got a cracking car there.... Fitting a box to limit revs a tad under factory spec would get around the only “problem” with that car.
Im thinking the car cuts ignition already at redline. My 95 Crown Vic did that. Its downshifting at the while going too fast that is the problem. The engine would be forced mechanically over redline.
Had one of these, excellent car, here in Norway they do stand out. Will never forget on one occation when a small boy probably three or four years old, pointed whilst turning as I drove past in a parking lot. Came running when I parked, he got to sit in the drivers seat and turn the wheel.
I like the 996. There I said it. I never had issue with the lights. The interior I don’t like though. Honestly, it’s what kept me away. I think if you have one or two shifts in the naughty range, you’ll be okay. Enjoy it.
The 996 is one of my favorites! I actually like the headlights and everything else on the car is perfect, style wise. Why would you worry about resale and the revs stuff when you love it so much. Just keep it!
don’t worry about big brother watching your revs. i have been watching this channel long enough, you’ll blow it up or sell it for a loss anyway. just drive it and enjoy it.
996 Still has the best pooper of all modern iterations of the 911. As a former 996 owner myself, I personally think it looks dope, with the *first* gen 'fried egg' headlights, but the clear corner euro version. Seriously, take a look at some of those early 996's, it'll really grow on you. Sadly mine blew up after spending more money than I ever thought possible in preventative and regular maintenance - porous cylinder heads. Funny nobody talks about this grenade, as its the most common of them all apparently. Still though, I loved that car... and I cant wait to get another 911. That should be a testament as to how good they really are. It can drain your finances, leaving you broke and empty inside... and you STILL want more. Lol. P..s. what in the hell happened to the audio at the last 5 seconds or so? jaysus Hooves at least mix so the levels match a little :) 'Spect, /s

Local Porsche dealer looking for me a car, just called me today about a 2002 911 Turbo they just took on trade in. This video helps me with my decision. Might just have to test drive. Wish I could get the deal you got!
I've read literally hundreds of articles & watched hundreds of videos on 996's, including the turbos - & this is the 1st time I've ever heard somebody mention red lining it being 'recorded' & that flattening resale values. & I've grown to love the headlights that! Not the 3.4 runny eggs - the 'dot 2's': they're fine & cool
I actually like those headlights a lot and it’s probably because I really got into cars in the late 90’s early 2000’s and the new 911 was the coolest thing ever back then. It defined the new generation of Porsches for me and I find the headlights really unique. What makes the headlights especially cool for me is the fact they even made a GT1 LeMans version rocking them. You made a good purchase Hoovie!
I bet everyone told already, but there is a lot of aftermarket solutions to leave those headlights behind. From a 997-style facelift to just a cover. And from just a different layout to slant-nose rebuilds.
Personally, I like the early air-cooled 911s. Classic style, great engine sounds, and fun as hell to drive. They might need the clutch upgrade, plus some work on modifying the tranny to make it easier to use and last longer. The G50 tranny would be a good one to swap in, but at that point, why not just buy an 87 or 88 version? I liked the SCs as well. Whatever older 911 you buy, it will be fun. The A/C on those cars was not a great idea, but the heater was the problem. Air-cooled cars, unless they had a gas heater (ala' the old Beetles with that "option"), are notoriously cold in the Winter... just bundle up. I would imagine one could install a better A/C compressor and fan, but that would be a big job. Rust was a problem on those old cars if they were abused and not properly maintained or driven (don't drive it thru salt or the ocean on the beach). If you have the 7-figures to spend on an old 911, buy a Singer... I'd bet that car is far superior (but, it had better be). As for your 911 turbo, I'd keep it. As long as the engine holds together, you'll have a fun car. The rev recording done by a computer is just asinine. Want to know if a car has been over-revved? Look at the oil, drive it to see how it runs and sounds, and have someone follow behind you when you test drive it, looking for smoke, preferably blue smoke. Also, look for head gasket leaks and any oil deposits anywhere on the engine or surrounding body and frame. Pretty normal stuff for anyone buying a high-performance car. You got lucky in buying it thru an auction, without driving it or inspecting it. I did that once on an 86 300SDL Benz from the Ft Lauderdale area. While it was a good car, it needed a lot more work for me to undertake than I had envisioned. I did most all of it myself. It was our first Benz, so I was a novice on the marque, but I quickly learned. It was eventually totaled (no one hurt) and we've had a number of Benzes since (now own two). Porsches are great cars, and many owners or fans of the marque are in their own camps as to what a Porsche really is... Just do your own thing if you plan to keep it and enjoy it. But, don't nuke it on the track. Just have fun on the street. Go for an exhaust change to get a better sound out of it. And, when it's time for a valve job, have the shop install better valve springs and rework the heads for more power... maybe even a port and polishing job? In any case, just drive it sensibly and enjoy it.
Just keep the video of you going to 6700 and shifting and it should be no big deal when you resell it. You can’t be afraid of that kind of bull crap and just enjoy your car I’ve had two of these 996 turbos and they are awesome
I so badly wanted a 996TT until I bought my C7 S6. Quicker and way more space. Speed aside, every car nut should own a 911 regardless of performance. Still on my bucket list. Thanks for being awesome
I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the range 1 and 2 over rev issues aren't from accelerating up to the rev limiter/red line on accel, but over revving from downshifting (too soon) and having the motor over rev against its own weight on decel. Can someone here clarify ? I've put the call into my Porsche Yoda but no response as of posting.
The Sound of Speed the money shift. Bahahahahaha. This just in: 986/996: Range 1 is recorded ignitions At the limiter, Range 2 is recorded ignitions Beyond the limiter, aka "the money shift" 987/997/981/991 Range 1 & 2 record ignitions at or just below the limiter, Ranges 3 thru 6 represent "increasingly higher engine speeds" above the limiter Hence forth, I personally wouldn't be concerned with Range 1 reports on a 996 or Range 1/2 on a 997, as Porsche themselves will apply extended warranty on those models with those rev range hits as they don't see them as potentially problematic. Something about rev ranges 3-6 happening beyond 200 operating hours ago (with 50 hrs being not enough to verify any damages so keep on trucking until you get up to 200 please folks) will also ease their minds on the motors integrity and ext warr may still be applicable. Lassi Kinnunen not really. Sounds more like a lot of people don't know what they're doing with a manual gearbox. Sounds also like the majority of customers/consumers are scared into expensive services they may not need.
If you have the 996 turbo with the tip (auto) trans, you never have to worry about the car over revering. And I think the value of these 996 turbos can only go up as the newer ones are so pricey.
Do not worry about the rev counter. Most tuned guys are running increased rev.limiters to 7250 or 7500. Its common knowledge and not overly worried about. Guys like myself with built motors run over 8k
The veracity of the porsche owners hatred of this style 911 just shows how douchey they are... I think the styling looks really nice, and the headlights look fine.
Add those headlight cover things that make it look closer to the round ones. But hey, for many of us, the interior and dash of a car is also very important, since that's what we look at the whole time we're driving. You could be cutting to shots of the interior while you talk for 10 minutes standing next to the car. I for one want to see the steering wheel design and the center stack, etc. SHOW THE INTERIORS!!!
I like that style headlight a lot more than the pre-facelift one. But kudos to Porsche for building a supercar-rivaling 911 and immediately neutering it with the little software narc. 👌🏼👌🏼
Thanks Hoovie for your honest insight on the old "air-cooled" cars. They are great in their own unique way, but after the nostalgia wears out, they do have their quirks and not the best daily drivers if you were to only have one Porsche. Some die hard air-cooled guys will still tell you there is only one real Porsche and it has to be air-cooled. ;^/ They are just missing out on some great water cooled 911's. Nice find with the Turbo!
You miss understanding about the rev limiter count in 996. There are two types. One of which you describe and nobody cares about the "Type I" (revving up to redline) Type II is something that WOULD effect resale value. Here is how to easily understand these types: Type I indicate bumping into the rev limiter on the way up. Type II indicate possible mis-shifts on the way down.
By the way, 996 turbo mezger dry-sump engines are virtually indestructible through revving, but any missed downshift that will spin the engine to 10000 rpm could be disastrous even to this GT1 block!
Lower the spring pressure of the manual boost controller, it will lower your maximum boost psi, making your car rev up slower and easier to catch before you hit the over redline range.
All those moaning about these "good purchases", we all know this engine will blow up soon then get LS swapped then will blow up again. Just wait, at the end of the day it is a hoopdie.
@@ForTehNguyen with mods and lots of torque they lift heads and bend rods. But the most likely thing to happen is he loses one of the coolant pipes. But it doesn't seem like he's running it hard at all, so he will probably be fine.
when I purchased my Porsche a few years ago (2nd hand Boxster S from a Porsche dealer) they printed me out this report which shows how many times it has been in the redline and a total number of minutes over the engine's life it has spent in the redline. My one was a gently driven PDK but it is a good way to see at a glance if the engine has been thrashed.

Close. It counts BOTH types of over-rev conditions. Nobody cares about the acceleration counter. Mine had thousands of them. Now the "accidentally shifted from 5th to 2nd" ignition is bad. Those will cause problems.
really? on 996s too? i thought that was 997 only. Thanks for correcting me.

When you accelerate, isn't there a rev limiter that kicks in before going into that Big Brother 1984 zone?
There are two types here is the shortest and easiest way to understand:
Type I indicate bumping into the rev limiter on the way up.
Type II indicate possible mis-shifts on the way down.
Nobody really cares about type 1 but type 2.... could be trouble
Is there no tool available to wipe the memory of the redline recorder?
Looks like the Wizard hit the thumbs down button.

I personally think there's some TH-cam algorithm that adds dislikes! I've seen videos that in no way could have a dislike, but there they are, disliking moms funeral!!
Nope. Thumbs up
We all know you’re a good sport, Wizard. Just joking around!
Dude just enjoy the car.
You just bought it and you are already worrying about re sell value.
He cant, he has to sell it because it is not breaking down on him and costing him money.
Jonathan Parker This is his shtick, it’s all a show. Don’t take it seriously.
reminds me of the people who buy a ferrari then don't drive it because it reduces it's resell value...so why buy a car that you can't drive?
Are you sure you are the blind squirrel, and not the nut?
you just fucked me up

Just put a 996GT2 front bumper on the turbo. I think they look beautiful! 996 tt is an insane amount of car for the money right now.
You can drive it as hard as you want without over revving it. You can bounce off the rev limit all day and thats not an over rev. Unless you miss shift the car then it is impossible to log an over rev.

I'm surprised that Hoovies Garage doesn't have 1 millions Subscribers yet. You have great little adventures and fun, quirky stories with each car and video. Thanks for all that you do!
Most hated in 2000, a classic that's worth half a million in 2030
Quit worrying Hoovie!
Am I the only one not hating that sexy nose? :O
Yes you are. It's hideous.
You are not alone. I love my 996 turbo!

Good job on the 996tt review. I totally agree with you, love mine. I just repaired and pinned the coolant fittings on mine. the video is on my channel. Thanks for sharing! Mine is an X50 and I got it for $33k 6 years ago, and not repairs at the time.
You talked this car up well enough that now I want one!
Do it! You wont regret it. I LOVE mine.
As a 30 something I way prefer these lights to the round beetle ones. I think as my generation ages, this will be reflected in price. Its just old people who want the round lights of their youth.
You need to buy a AMC Pacer..you know you want to.
I'd actually like to have a Pacer - it's a car you can actually SEE out of the back corners. I also want a Thing and a Gremlin.
Looks great, drives great, handles great and the price is especially great. Let the haters hate.
Maybe it’s because the 996 was the hot new Porsche of my childhood, but I personally think the 996 looks gorgeous. I love the fried eggs
Hell yeah. Love hearing from headlight supporters! I love my 996tt!
Sure, I’d want to know if someone had downshifted into the red, it’s soo damaging to any engine
Tbh this is one of my favorite Porsche’s and I like almost all Porsche’s especially 911
I love hearing this kinda stuff. Makes me realize those who appreciated the 996 aren't in the minority. I love my 700hp 996 turbo!
Had one of these, excellent car, here in Norway they do stand out. Will never forget on one occation when a small boy probably three or four years old, pointed whilst turning as I drove past in a parking lot. Came running when I parked, he got to sit in the drivers seat and turn the wheel.
I'm a big fan of the whole car, plus it's quick! 💯
And they're so much faster once modified!
I like the 996. There I said it. I never had issue with the lights. The interior I don’t like though. Honestly, it’s what kept me away.
I think if you have one or two shifts in the naughty range, you’ll be okay. Enjoy it.
No, I didn't read your column on Autotrader. Will I die of cholera?
The 996 is one of my favorites! I actually like the headlights and everything else on the car is perfect, style wise. Why would you worry about resale and the revs stuff when you love it so much. Just keep it!
Well put. My 996 turbo makes over 700hp and I love every minute of driving it. These things were meant to be driven!
Don't let Parker drive it.
Totally agree, I find my 996 turbo to be a far more enjoyable drive than modern cars which are too electronic and controlled.
Right?! The new ones have so many e-gizmos which means more ways for things to malfunction or break.
I love the 996.

don’t worry about big brother watching your revs. i have been watching this channel long enough, you’ll blow it up or sell it for a loss anyway. just drive it and enjoy it.
Lol.

Exactly. I bought my 996tt planning to drive it. And I love every minute of it! Especially at 700+hp
I'm 100% with you on this, I don't get the haters.
From my understanding, range 1 is an over rev on acceleration. Range 2 is the money shift style.
The Sound of Speed the money shift. Bahahahahaha.
This just in: 986/996: Range 1 is recorded ignitions At the limiter, Range 2 is recorded ignitions Beyond the limiter, aka "the money shift"
987/997/981/991 Range 1 & 2 record ignitions at or just below the limiter, Ranges 3 thru 6 represent "increasingly higher engine speeds" above the limiter
Hence forth, I personally wouldn't be concerned with Range 1 reports on a 996 or Range 1/2 on a 997, as Porsche themselves will apply extended warranty on those models with those rev range hits as they don't see them as potentially problematic.

Stop making smart decisions, no one likes sensible ideas.
Do not worry about the rev counter. Most tuned guys are running increased rev.limiters to 7250 or 7500. Its common knowledge and not overly worried about. Guys like myself with built motors run over 8k

Yessir! 🙌😁👍
Hoovie, it actually might behoove you to get a tune and have them set the rev limiter to a 'safe' RPM.
Hey, get your watch band adjusted
Add those headlight cover things that make it look closer to the round ones. But hey, for many of us, the interior and dash of a car is also very important, since that's what we look at the whole time we're driving. You could be cutting to shots of the interior while you talk for 10 minutes standing next to the car. I for one want to see the steering wheel design and the center stack, etc. SHOW THE INTERIORS!!!

You miss understanding about the rev limiter count in 996. There are two types. One of which you describe and nobody cares about the "Type I" (revving up to redline)
Type II is something that WOULD effect resale value. Here is how to easily understand these types:
Type I indicate bumping into the rev limiter on the way up.
Type II indicate possible mis-shifts on the way down.
By the way, 996 turbo mezger dry-sump engines are virtually indestructible through revving, but any missed downshift that will spin the engine to 10000 rpm could be disastrous even to this GT1 block!

when I purchased my Porsche a few years ago (2nd hand Boxster S from a Porsche dealer) they printed me out this report which shows how many times it has been in the redline and a total number of minutes over the engine's life it has spent in the redline.
