I shot this film in the 80's. It was tack sharp and had a real cinematic look to it

Picked up a few rolls of this off Ebay a few months back. Got some awesome and unique shots off of it. Also got some incredibly crappy ones. The Darkroom Lab developed it all for me with no issues. 🙂

Totally unrelated but a few years ago I gifted my wife a disposable camera that was being sold for 1 EUR at my local supermarket. It was marked ISO 400 and with the supermarkets white brand. Recently we finished the roll and I developed the film myself. I was surprised to find that the film canister had "made in Japan" scripted, and though that Fujifilm was the manufacturer. Sure enough, the film had the caracteristic green and red stripes and it was marked "400V". If I knew this, I would have bought allthe remaining disposable cameras that day! 😂

Woooo-Hoooo!!!! Hey there Noah -- thanks for mentioning me!!! Awesome that those rolls were C-41 and you were able to get them developed normally! And thanks for the tips on how to identify the difference -- and your results were a lot better than I was expecting -- as you showed not too tough to tweak them in post. So if I run across some more I will try them out. And I am glad that the Canon WP camera worked and did not leak!!!! Thanks man -- and yes, I remember 3-1/2 inch disks, in fact I remember 5-1/4 floppy disks at home!!!!

You can learn a lot from the edge markings, just compare them to some other negatives and it's not hard to figure out the actual manufacturer. Each of them usually uses their own unique fonts and data patterns and it's present even in the rebranded stuff.

I got a roll of this stuff from someone just a week ago, and after reading the label I arrived at this video! The thing that made me click though was the much appreciated Frasier reference in the description. Just happens to be one of my all time favorite shows (and I'm under 40 in case anyone reading this is wondering.) Thanks for the video!

I shot 30 rolls of this stuff back in the late 90s, still have the diskettes somewhere. The files are JPEGs, 640x480, pretty low quality scans but the prints were good. Send in a roll & you'd get back negatives, slides, prints & a diskette with the JPEGS and a fresh roll of film.

I bought that camera some years ago from eBay and it's fun. The 38mm focal length is a interesting. Prior to that, in the early-mid '90s I used a few rolls of SFW -- I lived in the area. At the time I appreciated what appeared to be more neutral colors but never stayed with it due to cost. I never realized they later scammed everyone with C-41 film.

I shot this in the 80s, and I recently came across a couple of unshot rolls (a 200 and a 400) that require the ECN-2 process. These probably expired in the late 80s, but I think I'll give them a try.

Found an old family roll from the 80s that had been sitting around, crossed processed it as b&w last week. Results weren’t that bad for the age and not being properly stored. So glad these chemicals are still around to an extent and I could do this because I saw pictures of my grandpa that I never met.

I shot a lot of this back in the 80s and 90s. The often promoted to send you several rolls of free film knowing full well you had to process them through SFW. But I liked that for one reasonable price, they sent you back negatives, slides, scans, and a fresh roll of film. The slides have since faded a bit but the negatives are fine. I still have a few expired rolls of the C-41 versions that I shoot every now and then.

In the days of film processing I found it easier to send the film through the mail instead of dropping film off at a big box store and going back to pick up the photos later. SFW used to send me a couple of rolls of free film every now and then, but if I used their print film the pictures had low color, and I got better color with Kodak film, which they also developed, so I'd throw the SFW film away and used the Kodak. But they also sent me a roll of slide film called Seattlechrome, it made quite good slides.

They were one of the first to offer their customers photos on CD. That was cool but you needed a special app to view them. I still have a couple and have trouble viewing them now.
Also had the policy of giving you a free role of film with every one you had them develop. And of course that new roll could only be developed by them.

Wow, thanks so much! I shot a roll of this with a flash, and self-dev'd in C41 before realizing it claimed to need that SFW-XL process. I'm currently on a trip away from home, so I can't verify, but hopefully mine is indeed the C41 variant. I didn't notice remjet, but also think I remember the emulsion backing being purple?
Anyway, thanks so much for the information! I was really curious where that roll had come from.

Old guy weighing in here. I lived in the San Fernando Valley in the 1980's and 1990's. The hub of the movie industry film processing.
There was a huge market for less than full reels of ECN color negative films. Seattle Film Works, and others would buy these. There was Dale Labs in SE FL, and one I used in North Hollywood called Indenticolor. Many a Saturday morning I would drop off film or pick up developed pictures and slides. Very economical. Like Seattle Film Works, various films available.
Here's the rub: Camera ECN films are very low contrast. When properly mated to what is called the "print" film... another reversal.....that's what goes through the movie projector, there is normal contrast. So, ECN negs to print film slides were great.
However...........when printed to paper, the images were very low contrast. They lacked punch. Bluntly, they sucked. So, yeah, you could get prints and slides from one film, but be prepared to be disappointed for the prints.
Kodak had a "print" film that was designed for ordinary C-41 processed negatives. Lordy, I used to be able to rattle off all those four digit Kodak film labels. In the early 1990's I discovered RBG Color Labs, in, of course, Hollywood. Send in your C-41 film, you got back the usual quality appropriate prints and stunning slides.
There is still a lot of ECN film available as 35mm reloads. Cinemax, see www.filmphotographyproject.com There are ECN-2 kits available. You can also develop in ordinary C-41 process with the extra step of physically removing the remjet layer. I've done so many times. There may be some color shifting, but it's minimally and if scanning to your digital darkroom, correctable.

There's more to the story of that type of film and service. Dale Laboratories in Florida operated in the same way that Seattle FilmWorks did. The 'cinema film' was Kodak 5247, and for the price of mail-in processing you'd get back the negatives and two sets of 4x6 glossy prints... and a new roll of film. So once you started you were kind of sucked into the system because hey... free film. I think you could also get both slides and prints from the same order. All the resulting photos are desaturated and colour-shifted (lots of magenta haze), and grain in low-light conditions was horrible.

    • @KipRoof
      @KipRoof 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I actually had better luck with Dale than with SFW. My SFW experience was generally ok, but Dale was consistently better for me. I ended not using either in the long run 'cause you could often get your images cheaper and faster at the grocery store.

This may not belong on this video, but what are your thoughts about using a dichromate bleach beginng step to remove the remjet? I have read/seen/heard that doing so eliminates about 95+%, (if not 100%) of the remjet before the developing process and does not bother the underlying film at all. Granted, the information to which I’m referring was with developing 16mm movie film, but I would think it would apply. I’m curious about your opinion as the more I watch your content, the more respect I gain for you and your opinions! Thanks!

I shot this stuff back in the 90’s. They advertised that they would give you both prints and slides from the same roll. The problem was that if I remember correctly, both were pretty awful. The colors were pretty desaturated, and they both had some pretty serious green shifts. That first roll that you shot looked like they stuff that they would send back. I gave up on them pretty quickly and went back to Kodak.
