Here in Norway we have a lot of money saved up in our oil fund. If our Scandinavian brothers chipped in, we could make an offer for Hawaii! It's in our national interest to own some warm islands where we can chill during the cold winters.

I deployed to Afghanistan to Helmand with a contingent Danish soldiers based out of Camp Leatherneck. As friends and allies they fought with us and came to our aid after we called for their support as NATO, the only time Article 5 was exercised after 9/11. In our time of need they answered the call and came to our aid... and this is how we repay courage and friendship. As a retired veteran, this behavior and those who support it are NOT American. They are not part of my country and beneath the dignity and honor of the United States. Trump may be the next President and I support him to uphold the democratic process... but my allegiance is to the Constitution and America. Just because people take off the uniform does not mean we take off our honor. Trump's supporters need to tread carefully. He was NOT elected to start new wars against our friends.

I think it is very likely Denmark capitulates.

Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland!
Greenland is currently an autonomous region within the Kingdom of Denmark. We are proud Danish citizens but our dream is full independence.
We, most emphatically, DO NOT want to become another, abused, neglected overseas territory of the US. The idea that you can just send someone in here with a bunch of money and we’d sell our country, is ludicrous. All we have to do is to see how the US has, and is treating its indigenous populations in Alaska and in the continental US. We have no illusions about being treated any differently under US rule.
Greenland has formally been a territory of Denmark since 1721, long before the U.S. was even a sovereign country.
In 1979, Greenland got autonomy and a Home Rule government was elected. This was achieved, not through bloodshed and war but through peaceful negotiations. A situation pretty unique in a world where most colonized people have had to pay for any independence with their blood.
The authority of the Government of Greenland, and its parliament, was further expanded in 2009. The Greenland government and parliament make unilateral decisions on almost all domestic issues.
The members of the parliament are elected every four years through free and fully democratic elections. However, some areas are still determined by Denmark such as defense, foreign policy, citizenship, and the judiciary system. Denmark does not, however, enact or decide any laws in these areas that concern Greenland without consulting first with our own lawgivers.
The ties between Greenland and Denmark go way beyond history, politics or money. There are many deep family ties. Many people in Greenland have a Danish ancestor or ancestors or Danish family members.
Our society is modeled on the Scandinavian system of tax payed healthcare, education, social services etc. Currently Denmark subsidizes Greenland annually with the equivalent of around 600 million US dollars.
To think that the US would ever willingly pay even a fraction of that to Greenland is insanely naive. The US has never paid as much as a penny in rent to Greenland for the land they have annexed/occupied for their military bases.
The US already strategically controls Greenland, through their military base in the northern part of Greenland. There is no chance of the Russians or the Chinese coming in here with any military might.
No, trump isn’t worried about the Russians or the Chinese coming to Greenland. That is an excuse. No, he wants full control so he can strip mine Greenland with impunity of any and all mineral wealth, raping her blind and leaving nothing but death, destruction and pollution in his wake. This is what his MAGA goons mean when they talk about “development”.
We don’t want your system of government, we don’t want your model of society with its crazed gun culture, insane medical bills and costly education only for the rich. You have no freedoms that we don’t already have. Our society is not perfect, but yours is definitely not worthy of emulation.
We can’t do much if the orange menace wants to act like Hitler and annex/occupy us. Our population is small and not heavily armed.
But such an aggressive act towards a friendly, peaceful neighbor and ally, would certainly not win the US any new friends on the world stage. They would probably lose several of the ones they have now as other countries would justifiable fear a U.S. take over. Trump may think he’s joking or that it’s fun to threaten the sovereignty of other sovereign nations as he has done to Canada, Greenland, Panama and Mexico. But this kind of rhetoric is dangerous in a world as volatile as ours. To dismiss his comments is foolish, as he, like Hitler did, has plenty of followers who are ready and willing to carry out his wishes of a violent take over of territories not belonging to the US.
The US under trump would gain far more through peaceful coexistence and trade…and as our leaders in Greenland have stated: We are open for business, but we are definitely not for sale and I`ll fight for my country so bring it on anyhow you like..

    • @uffa00001

People of Greenland should understand that independence, real independence, only exists if a people has the military means to guarantee it. An "independent" Greenland would be colonized by the US or Russia, sooner or later, in any case. Thinking that a population of 50.000 can remain independent just because they want to be independent is naif. They can remain independent if no power allows other powers to put their hands over it. Failing that, Greenland will fall prey to some power. It's union that makes strength. If Greenland wants real autonomy, they should just tighten their ties with Denmark and the EU, rather than trying to sever them.

It's been quite insulting to hear this language coming from Americans (and, yes, there are many of those who support these crazy Trump's ideas). Trump has opened a second front against Europe (first one being Putin's war in Ukraine) and has begun the destruction of NATO. This means we in the Baltics, Nordics and elsewhere in Europe, need to create our own, old-new, alliance. Not crazy.. that's missing the most dangerous part.
He wants the media talking about this instead of him creating an oligarchy mafia state based on Putin's Russia. He's removing regulation, and guardrails, destroying all fed departments, and installing loyalists to weaponize the IRS and FBI. He will then extort billionaires and/or sell favors and take cuts. He spins it piecemeal. He tried in first term to some success, but now he is being much more systematic about it. Hitler in the streets, Putin in the sheets. This is his primary goal, all this culture stuff is read meat to the base to keep them excited and red herrings for media. And it's working, with everyone talking about this nonsense. His only true skill is manipulating the media, and of course fraud, cheating, extorting, and rep smearing.

Hi, Anders, I'm from Ukraine and I want to thank you for supporting Ukraine.
By the way, I noticed that Trump's rhetoric is very similar to Putin's rhetoric regarding Ukraine. I mean, he talks a lot about security at the expense of other sovereign territories that are not his, about helping someone because they are "suffering", and about how they all want to be part of our country (Russia or the US). It's very sad to hear this, in the US context it's even sadder because I thought people in the US are not as brainwashed as they are in Russia to vote for such a bad person as Trump.

Not only did Trump pull the rug under the Afghan government by negotiating a withdrawal of US troops with Taliban.. he also destabilized the coalition to the point were all the allied countries could do nothing but pull out by pulling thousands of US troops. This guy is actually very naive about the power politics dictating modern international relations. It find it bizarre how far he dismisses Trump, because if he wants it he will take it - conflict between allies is a zero-sum game and Denmark knows the US is its primary security provider and that it is better the devil you know. I think it is very likely Denmark capitulates. The EU can't even risk a trade war and fight the US and Russia both.

Why does Denmark have any right to colonial holdings in North America or the Western Hemisphere? The empire of Denmark refused to even grant full independence to Iceland-until Denmark was preoccupied in 1940, whereupon 99% of Icelanders voted for independence from the Danish Crown in 1944 to restore Iceland to a republic with full power to the Icelandic Alþingi as the world's oldest democratic legislature. Greenland is even further west, unequivocally an extension of the North American continent…

But it will also fundamentally weaken any American sanctions towards China, as now they can 'demonstrate' that such actions aren't about upholding international law, making following suit by anyone else much harder.
Not to mention the disaster that could happen if he tried following through.
It's very entertaining for his domestic audience, but a horrid owngoal on the international stage that likely will affect the succes of American international endeavours negatively for a very long time.

"As now they can 'demonstrate' that such actions aren't about upholding international law"... never has been, never will be. International politics is about power, plain and simple; hypocrisy literally doesn't matter except to moral grandstanders. "Upholding international law" only happens with a dominant consensus of military power anyways, hence it only matters that enough powerful nations agree it to be important. Even then, would western countries fight to defend North Korea against a Chinese invasion? If not, then it actually isn't about international law at all. China doesn't need "demonstrations" to not believe in western views on international politics. The only thing that matters is whether or not they will get their asses kicked for invading neighboring countries such as Taiwan.

Three historic points to be added:
    1. The US recognized full Danish superiority over Greenland in 1917. That was part of the agreement when Denmark sold the Danish West India Islands to the US. If the US goes back on the deal then the purchase is also of and Denmark will take back the islands. The US has no right to compensation as it had full benefit of the islands for the last 108 years.
    2. In a trial in 1933 the International Court in Haag decided that Denmark had full control of all of Greenland when Norway disputed it.

The problem is that MAGA is not most people, they do not understand nor care for these legal frameworks. Hell, even more moderate American presidents have spat in the face of the ICC and other such institutions. To them none of this matters, as it's the law of the jungle where the strongest wins, and the Trump camp are all high on the Trump opium. Too high too question anything he says, no matter how deranged. Russia and China are the only other countries showing such disregard, and they're both authoritarian dictatorships with personality cults.

I don't see how any of this matters. True, Trump can't buy Greenland from Denmark because Denmark doesn't own it, but if he can entice the people of Greenland to vote to join the US as a state then I don't see how Denmark can stop it. So Trump is fully able to buy Greenland, he just has to buy it from the people of Greenland and not Denmark.

So, their brain decided that it would be ok no matter who of the two would win. Which is quite stupid too. So, if you talk about those who voted you can say 48%. It’s all very weird. USA already has unlimited access to any land or infrastructure in Greenland or Denmark for that matter. Denmark has a romantic relationship with Greenland where they’ll pay very high benefits to Greenland for no real return, at least compared to what else that money could be spent on. The Inuit nationalists (current Greenland was founded as a Norse colony, so it’s important to distinguish between the real natives and the immigrating Inuits from the north) want independence at any cost, besides getting their Danish funding cut (for some strange reason they see no limit to how evil Denmark is, but telling them that leaving the union would mean their welfare stops is apparently controversial). Good luck getting the Americans to fund Greenland welfare or showing the cultural sensitivity to allow Inuit to be spoken in parliament, like Denmark just did (despite all Greenland politicians being fluent in Danish, we just allowed them translators to and from Inuit. USA doesn’t even allow Spanish to be spoken in their institutions). It’s very clear that Trump just wants resources and more land to destroy. He then rallied local village idiots and took advantage of existing tensions, like he already did in USA, to further his narcistic cause. The funniest thing is that he just mentioned how Inuits experienced racism from Danes. Wonder what the Latinos and African Americans, or just women in general, experience from the Trumptards?
