      It's flawed, but it's harmless. I personally find it a guilty pleasure. It came from the guys who made Fox and the Hound, another favorite classic of mine. I know it has a lot of dark stuff that parents wouldn't want their kids to see, but I actually welcome the dark stuff. It's a good change from this bright and saccharin sweetness that gets shoved in our faces by Disney. Still, the characters can be amazingly annoying or bland like Gurgi and Tarran. The only one I got a laugh from was Fflewddur Flam and his harp, and Hen Wen was cute. Eilonwy was okay, less whiny, but in the same category as Tarran. And my God, I still love John Hurt's Horned King.

    If Gurgy had just stayed dead, his sacrifice would have actually been an interesting moment. Because, as I’ve said,: as far as the movie goes (I admit I haven’t read the book) he was DESIGNED to be insufferable, even to the other main characters, as Doug so cleverly cut out. So having him have the heroic moment when until now he’s been nothing but an annoying cowardly shitstain is actually profound, the character knowing what they are and doing the only thing they can to redeem themself. But then the movie ruins it by bringing him back.
    If Gurgy stayed dead and the other characters actually really DID anything, this movie could have actually been pretty good.

      This movie is basically two books crammed together. Gurgi is a lovable weirdo in the books, the character who sacrifices himself in the book does stay dead and he was a blowhard human that is a total D-Bag. If I recall, he sacrifices himself for the fame more than any altruistic reason.

    It's strange how most of these dark fantasy 80's films were box office bombs when they were first released, but are now considered beloved or cult favorites. Were they ahead of their time, or were audiences back then just not interested in them?

    • @demiliomason1565
      @demiliomason1565 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      It was neither, people have been doing dark fantasy and more adult themed animations since the 1960's. To some this movie is a cult favorite, but i don't see why really. It's not very good. Some of Ralph Bakshi's work on the other hand makes more sense.

    • @gothicMCRgirl
      @gothicMCRgirl 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Geoffrey Richards I think it’s because this is Disney who made it, and at the time, Disney wasn’t really known for doing dark and gritty. So parents probably gave this a pass. And you could argue this film isn’t even really that dark or gritty. It’s only dark in the visuals, but in the concepts, it’s still pretty much your common hero and fairy tail schtick. Nothing really “shocking” happens, even the death of Gurgy meant nothing since they still brought him back. They really half-assed this film. It’s like Disney WANTED to do something more risqué and out of the box, but at the same time they were afraid of the backlash parents might give them, so you have this neutered version of the dark film they wanted to make.

    • @BLZ231
      @BLZ231 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      gothicMCRgirl don’t quote me on this, but I heard that the original cut for the Black Cauldron was so dark that it received an R rating, which Disney was not okay with, so they reworked it to be more family friendly. It was in production hell for years, I do know that for sure.

    • @mcihay246
      @mcihay246 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@BLZ231 Definitely. Since this is after Walt's death, the final nail in the flop coffin was when the bossman at the time wasn't interested in the dark tone compared to most previous films.
      So it was only after the drawings were all done and dusted did the higher ups watched it, lost interest in the non-child friendly tone, and demanded 12 minutes worth of drawings, audio, etc to be removed. Leaving a lot of gaps and pacing issues in the final product.

    It is based on a book series known as the Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander which adapts the first two books for the basis of the film. Lloyd went on record saying that he overall found the film enjoyable but said it wasn't really all that faithful to the source material. Example being the original antagonist of the series was Arawan the Death-Lord with the Horned King serving as his second in command, similar in many ways to the Witch-king from the Lord of the Rings.

    • @CatoftheStorm
      @CatoftheStorm 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I remember reading the first book in fourth grade. Or rather the teacher read it to everyone. I liked it enough to read the rest of the series, and another of Alexander's book (Westmark I think?), not that I remember anything that happened now.

    • @JayHillard
      @JayHillard 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      It’s the amalgam of the first two books that gives it the bat-shit feel. Key points, characters, and plot progression was removed and the rest was sewn together in a “will that fit there? Fuck it, nobody read it anyway” feel. Its a Frankenstein’s monster of the source material. The books are simply written, and have a similar feel to CS Lewis in its style. Each book has a very different tone, which is another reason why the film feels off at points. If you get to see Taran actually properly chided for his childishness by Cor and Gwydion (not in film) and you see Eilonwy’s head strong character soften as she matured (not in film) you actually feel something for these characters, and understand how their decisions shape their growth into actual wonderful adults.

    THE WATCHER IN THE WOODS is probably the "BEST DARK DISNEY" film because that at least tried to be "Geniunely Spooky", although it also gave Disney a Heart attack (the ending literally got changed AT LEAST four times; once even taken out of theaters to be recut and then, redistributed). Frankly, I really want someone to do a commentary on that film; such an underrated movie.............that somehow got remade into a LifeTime movie starring Angelica Huston as the "Elderly Woman" and directed by...................................CLARISSA EXPLAINS IT ALL's Melissa Joan Hart????!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ...............................I Gotta SEE THIS THING!

It has defined not just my childhood, but the childhoods of countless children across the world, stretching from present day all the way back to the 1950's. Its like he says in the 2011 Disneycember video: "Disney will always be there". I love the newer logo with the more realistic castle, but this logo will forever be magical.

    Ok, am I crazy, or is the voice that does the intro narration ALSO the actor who played Gandalf in the Rankin-Bass Lord of the Rings movies?
    In all seriousness, this film pisses me off. You're right, it IS generic, and the best part is some of the bluth-ier visuals...
    That's not what the books were. The books are what you'd get if Tolkien
    1. Were writing for kids to begin with.
    2. Was obsessed with Welsh mythology instead of Anglo-Norse.
    And 3. Could actually write characters.
    The movie abandons 90% of the cast, and basically cobbles the plots of books 1 and 2 (of FIVE) together into a single plot. The bit about the "evil king" at the beginning? Yeah, /he/ is the big-bad. The Horned King is his /dragon/, his lieutenant/obstacle for the heroes to overcome on the way. There is so much more, and I encourage anyone interested in a legitimately good coming of age fantasy to find a copy of the Chronicles of Prydain. Your local library probably has them on audiobook.

    • @death-king1834
      @death-king1834 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually don't hate this film as overall I found it to be flawed but enjoyable. But the original novels probably are better in comparison. To be honest the film has made interested in reading the original Prydain novels. Finding a copy though is extremely difficult though.

    Yeah, even though I grew up with this movie...and love it...it does have its share of problems. One thing great about it is the freaking villain. I mean you can't argue that he is one of the most threatening and greatest designs Disney has ever churned out. Also, his voice is just perfect...and yeah the plot is fairly basic...it is still about an evil tyrant trying to start the zombie apocalypse which is a risky move in itself...hoooowever, the hero's really weighed the film down, and even if you added the darker elements that were edited out...I still don't think it would be enough to make up for it.

    What if we edit the characters a bit?
    The boy is more scrappy, wants to be a professional fighter but doesn't have training, and the sword gives him the chance to take a shortcut and he decides to hone his skills himself.
    The girl is trained as a swordswoman. She is the one who disciplines him (big sister relationship, no snu snu) and that is how their relationship is formed.
    The furry is the bard. What I mean is composite the two characters so that the little fuzzy buzzard is the bard so that you have something for the kids to be like aw and the other people to take bets on who is going to eat him, the boy or the girl.
    The visuals are awesome, and the enemy can make saying pig still pretty intimidating, so what'ya say?
