- Sir Elton John began collecting photographs in 1991 and his collection is now regarded as one of the leading private photography collections in the world. From major vintage 20th century modernist works to cutting-edge contemporary images, the collection now holds over 7,000 fine art photographs. Focussing on a selection of highlights from their collection, John and Furnish reveal their deep passion for collecting through a series of personal recollections.
We discover how the collection first started with the acquisition of fashion photography by Horst P. Horst, Herb Ritts and Irving Penn; how an appreciation of photography to capture a moment in time drives their interest in photojournalism; and why Robert Mapplethorpe is the most collected artist in their collection. John also reveals the powerful impact Nan Goldin's Thanksgiving series had on him at White Cube in 1999, and why drama, sexiness and atmosphere keep them acquiring prints from Philip-Lorca diCorcia's Hustlers series.

Have enormous respect for Elton & David. Great images thank you.
Sir Elton John, I have been rocking to your songs from the day you first elbum came out. You are absolutely amazing , thank you for the wonderful times we have had to share your music, songs, and person. At 74 I am still an avid fan, your legend will always carry on as we hang on onto memories and shall continue to do so. With deep gratitude and admiration love and best wishes Wendy Denham South Africa. ❤❤❤
In the late 80's and my early 20's, I was at Hamiltons gallery in London and had just spent all the money I had on a signed Avedon book, as leaving the gallery I saw these 4 beautifully printed & framed portraits of the Beatles by Avedon which just blew me away and 2B honest also changed my life. As the curious kid that I was I asked how much this set of prints was, to which to my astonishment I was told 70k but had already been bought by Elton (still not a Sir then). It was then for the first I realised not only the power of a photograph but of the respect that photography also had in the art world.
Really interesting collection and collectors, the passion for photography really shines through
Elton is a sweetheart really....I had the immense privilege of seeing him live on his Captain Fantastic tour in the Early Eighties...amazing performer..so lovely to see him happy and contented with his Partner David.
Wow! This was fantastic. Thank you so much. In this world where we fly past images the idea of walking into an exhibition and deciding to own the body of work, to retain the story, is remarkable. Imagine having that ability. To keep it as one.
Great reflection. I just wish it was longer.
Lovely video - thanks! Great to hear them talking with such passion about their collection. I was lucky enough to visit the exhibition at the V&A recently: really impressive, and well worth seeing.
what a fabulous interview an insight to their passion
I went yesterday to this exhibition. It was much more explicit than this interview shows.
I absolutely love hearing Elton and David talk about their passion for photography and what drives that passion. I had the fortune of seeing Elton's exhibition several years ago called Chorus of Light at the High Museum in Atlanta. Phenomenal collection.
Protect all of them at all costs and their work(s).
Just loved this. Thank you 🙏🏼📸
Wow! What a collection! And a really lovely heartwarming couple of guys Elton and David are.
They’ve both made a significant contribution to UK culture. Well down guys, and thanks.
Interesting moment, thanks
Wonderful conversation! I enjoyed every element of this presentation.

Thank you. This was very enjoyable.
Crocodile rock, yellow wood road and the ever candle in the wind for HRH PRINCESS Diana. God bless you.

Lmao my high ass thought that was a very fabulous patton aswalt
😂😂😂😂
Sir Elton I’ve got some 5x4 prints of a project I’m hoping to get published. If you’re interested in lending me your honourable patronage and purchasing some of the prints, that would be my foot in the door of the art world.
Sup
Those are photojournalistic images, not art. Powerful non the less, seeing it once is enough.
Most famous people have poor taste in photography and they usually only collect photos of people. The stuff in this video is like pop music of the photography world.
I wouldn’t want to own a photo collection that included isolated and abused women , I’m afraid. I’m glad I only charge my phone outside his exhibition. I’d rather sketch statues.
