Just being able to free roam in a car game back then was a great feeling. Either this was a hidden gem or a forgotten classic. This game was enjoyable and it felt like i was driving in a fantasy world. A game feeling like an actual game with ''no limits'' is always enjoyable from time to time. This was around the time i spent countless hours on Nfs hot pursuit 2 (ps2), one of my favourite nfs of all time.
One of my most magical childhood memories : Taking a long drive through the ocean late one in-game night, listening to “the minute” by push kings on my radio. Suddenly the sea floor starts to gradually rise and I’m driving up onto a beautiful tropical island illuminated by the sunrise. It was such an awesome surprise.
One of my all time favorite cult-classic PS2 games, and in an annoying way, one of my most proud gaming experiences due to how obscure it is. I have struggled for YEARS with trying to properly describe the way that this game's open world completely captured me in a way that has never been replicated. Even though the "main" areas of the open world are essentially just set dressings on one big loop around the map, it never feels that way. There's so much to discover by just driving off of that "loop", and the game is designed so well that it naturally encourages you to just "go off-road" at some point. The dialog with all of the different characters never feels redundant and boring. Some interactions might be short and lead to nothing, but it ALWAYS feels like you're meeting a real person in a way. Funny enough one of my other favorite PS2 games is Seek And Destroy, which has the same publisher and is also a ChorroQ game, but it's an action adventure game where everyone is a tank. It's like an Ace Combat style campaign with cartoonish tanks with TONS of customization, upgrades, and definitely a lot of character. Both games will forever hold an important place in my heart.
Thank you for re-unlocking a Core Memory for me. Played this with my dad as a small child, played it by myself after he passed. We never beat it together so one day awhile back I sat down and finished it off. It was honestly a huge part of my childhood and I can't believe I forgot about it. The nostalgia, damn I wish I could replay it...
A massive piece of my childhood. I'm replaying on an emulator right now. There are no 'quest markers' , so a bit like Morrowind, it forces you to engage and use your brain.
One of the first games i played in the ps2...borrowed it from a friend actually..this game lives in my childhood memories..especially the OST..good times
I never in my life thought I'd see a review on this game. Grew up playing every racing game imaginable, but this is one that me and my best friend will bring up out of nowhere and talk about how great it was. I think I got the game around mid 2000s from my Gram, since her place was the afterschool spot (and right next door to my best friend, worked perfectly) and I'm fairly sure we'd choose this over GTA, NFS, Gran Turismo, you name it. My overall review of it was it was so simple, you couldn't get upset with it, but at the same time, anybody (non car people) could pick it up and play it cause it had a story and the map was huge. I'm gonna need to find this game and a functioning PS2. This brought back so many great memories
This was some game in my childhood! I don't remember how I ended up getting it, whether my mum or dad gifted it to me at Christmas or Birthday. I get so many memories from thus game. This, and Tanks: Seek and Destroy was, oh man, I love the nostalgia
Having speedran this game for thousands of hours I can assure you that it is worth your time! I have to agree that it teaches you to subvert your expectations because now as an adult, I can play any game in a modern era without distaste due simply to how it looks or feels. Some fun facts about the game: Any% WR is now 12:12 by AtomicClon. We skip the WHOLE ENTIRE GP by using a reverse momentum text glitch with the gate and guard at the gate. Also, the MIDI music was stolen from a composer based in the US and the composer himself just found out last year. Its got quite the story for such a wonky "CarPG".
this is still one of my favorite games of all time. All the customizability while also being super simple and fun to drive around in was all I needed to throw hundreds of hours into it wish theyd come back with a new game
Wow! I have never heard of this game. I was expecting another GT7 video, but I am instead introduced to a video game just before my time. It's nice to know that games do teach us life lessons. Great video by the way
As a gamer who's bad at and doesn't like driving games overall, I must say I LOVED this game. The map is so big, that even if you landed in an area you shouldn't be, like on top of the tree line, it still has collision detection up there, so you can literally go anywhere you want. There's not many racing games out there, that have alongside the races, 100 pictures to collect in your photo album, 100 coins to find, mini games, 7 hidden Gemstones, quests, upgrades and collectables to earn. This game was worth every penny. I even lent it to my friend's brother and he cursed my name for a week as I made him addicted to it XD
This was my all time favorite game as a kid. I've been trying to track down another copy lately so I can experience it all again, but I haven't had any luck yet
Howdy! I have a spare copy believe it or not. Like others, it was my favorite as well. I believe its just the disc- but if you cover shipping I am more than happy to send it to you!
Yes, same experience here , except as an adult. My kids got this for Christmas one year, and we all thought it was a cheap naff game. Then we started to play it for a bit and got completely absorbed in it. Completing tasks, getting photos taken, collecting body shells and upgrading the car’s handling and engine etc (the car handles really badly at the start). The map IS huge, and fun to explore. Just a great fun game.
I need to boot this up and have a play of it. I sunk soooo many happy hours into this as a kid and there's still so many things I haven't done in it. A really well made game and holds a special place in my heart 🤘
Never heard of this game before! PS2 was a formative console for me. GT3 was my first game and it curated my car love. I wish I had this game back then though. Looks absolutely fun!
I think Choro Q games back in the childhood had fired up our expectations towards racing games now, back in the days we don't really enjoy the realistic driving physics but Choro Q physics filled that void. Also they subtly providing so much car information that burns into our brains, and collecting all the bodies and chassis making our own builds out of it is way beyond our expectations back in the days. We do expect modern games give us more challenging races / quests, creativity tuning for different quests, larger maps / more tracks, and not as hard as F money earning methods like what Choro Q series gave us.
Me and my mate every day after school would race each other and do the campaign. Huge graduation beating the game in one day because we never owned a save disk to do it over multiple days
I've heard of this but never tried it (as I first saw it in about 2017 and don't have a PS2) but this actually looks like genuine fun. Never thought I'd see a monster truck 787B with rocket boosters drive up a pyramid but there it is!
My first exposure to this game was when I first got a PS2 for Christmas and it came packed with a selection of budget Japanese titles, renamed for Western appeal, this included Fighting Fury (a Baki the Grappler fighter), Seek and Destroy (a military tank game spin off from the main ChoroQ series which RTA is based off) Robot Warlords (I think it's called Operation Velvet in Japan) and Lake Masters EX. I honestly spent days playing the game and having fun discovering new things that I still kept playing even after I got more quality games like WWE HCTP and such.
The first time I played this I was driving around a section trying to figure out how to get on top of a hill and I went flying off the cliff by the ocean. Soon as it happened I was like oh no, I'm dead. Then the car drops into the ocean and I am still driving on the ocean floor. I was laughing so hard. PS2 had so many great random games like this, that aren't well known. It was hard to break away from wanting to play the bigger name games in the early 2000s like you were saying about Gran Turismo. I consider myself lucky to be a teenager in the early 2000s
Just wish there was some other thing we could do with the Devil parts besides just replaying stuff. It is fun to go destroy that dude at the drag race.
I've always loved racing games, I played plenty before I picked this game up as a kid, and I have played many since then. Though where some peoples first RPG was Final fantasy, Morrowind, Kotor, ect, mine was Road Trip. While it was simple, i seriously enjoyed and spent a lot of time in this game as a kid. Its interesting to see how my current interests stem from this as now so much of my time is spent playing other Racing games and RPGs (fallout, cyberpunk, ect). I cant see ourselfs ever getting another Car JRPG style game again as we are far from the old ps2 era of gaming sadly. Though i do still enjoy coming back to this game every few years.
I won this in a competition you ran quite a few years back, maybe 7 years!. Anyway, played it quite bit and it's really fun. Free roam and the ability to change parts is the best bit
I think for me my racing game that subverted my expectations in my childhood is 2008's FUEL. Just to show how different our interests in when one person is into dark, graphic and thrilling media, gets surprised by a cartoony and beginner friendly product, and the other literally has vice versa. But yeah despite it's negative reputation, I ended up loving how alone you felt in one of the largest maps in any video game. I really want to know how large exactly RTA's map is just to compare that game and FUEL's.
As an adult today was my 1st time playing. I love Seek and Destroy and after looking into that game i found this was kind of in the same series. I didnt look any further, i found it for like $30 on ebay and so far its been very enjoyable. Also, it is one of the only other games ive found with one of my real life cars, an 83 toyota celica supra. Very happy with that
I played this game growing up. Such a charming, fun, and overall enjoyable open world. It just came to light that some of the music from the game was stolen though... Very unfortunate
I love this game and still play it every now and again, i hate RPG games but road trip adventure is the only RPG game that i will sit down and play, it doesnt feel like an RPG game, i suppose that to me it feels more like an adventure. This game always reminds me of my childhood and i love having a trip down memory lane. For me its easy the best game in the Choro Q franchise. I remember going into Morrisons ( A Supermarket in the UK for people that live outside the uk) and finding it on a spinning metal stand and i remember asking my mum and dad if i could buy it with my pocket money and they said yeah, for me its the only time that i have actually enjoyed going home and playing a new game. I wish hat they would do a HD remake of this game
just found out about this game today and was amazed by everything about it, but my eyebrows were raised by how the game asks you what currency you're familiar with and puts that into the game, only to be baffled to see 'quid' and not 'pounds' or simply '£' cuz you selected british pounds. what a neat little game! i hope sony puts it on the ps plus classics someday, otherwise i'll have to figure out ps2 emulation.
Choro Q was Cars before Pixar made Cars. 😂 In all seriousness, this Choro Q is the only PS2 Choro Q I’ve never played. I should try it someday, but I’d love to revisit and complete HG4 first… I sure hope I could stomach that dang Ghost House mission, though (it managed to be really creepy, and made kid me quit the game permanently - look it up!)
I'm going to paint a picture... imagine- it's your third grade birthday party. You are at a Lazer Tag facility and your mom just showed up with the Costco pizza after a few rounds of blasting your friends and you're drenched in sweat. You power through your pizza so you are able to open your presents in front of your friends. Well, that was me. One of my best friends, hands me a gift and I can already tell its a PS2 game. I'm stoked. I open it up- and it still has the Toys R Us bargain bin sticker on it. I'm not going to lie- at first I was dissapointed. I didn't have high expectations for a game I always overlooked at all bargain bins. Since that day I have most likely put 100s of hours into it- and is a core childhood memory. The other day, I was cleaning through my PS2 games and found two copies- and unfortunately the PS2 no longer boots. I just ordered a Retroid Pocket 4 Pro to solely play this. Thank you so much for bringing this back to me.
this was a formative game for me. i bought the game expecting it to be like rumble racing bc of the us cover. while initially put off by the very poor performance of the stock performance, i was completely charmed by the sd look, over-world map, and the npcs. It racing rpg pilled me. I later find out that it's a series thanks to seeing a ChoroQ in PSM, which shared the name of the coins in the game. I was also collecting the toys bc of the series. These things were marketed in the west for their penny gimmick when their actual appeal is seeing your fave cars with these SD proportions that still have a surprising amount of detail still packed in.
same! It was so obscure though so nobody else was into it, but everyone i showed thought it was awesome. i feel this series could have been so much more popular in the west if it was better advertised
Oh wow, I have this game and still play it, it was always so entertaining and the music was amazing, the variety of the tracks were brilliant, you could go from inside a japanese temple to a snowy mountain to a tropical island and so much more, I can't believe people still play this, an the stamps and mini games added so much to the game, I remember I found it so creepy driving on the highway from Fuji town (I think it's called) to sandpolis at night lol, the open world was massive and big respect to the game for that but alot of the places that aren't proper locations you can teleport to are very bland but the game is old and the playstation 2 probably didn't have the power and the hardware to make a detailed open world. The racing is good but the ai having a set speed to eachother kinda ruined the racing a bit for me but I still liked it, I remember Diez in the GT40 being the hardest to beat followed by Peo in his testarosso and I remember there would be a garbage truck always in last play which I found funny, I can't remember the name of it though, so all in all I would rate this game an 8/10, I wouldn't say it holds up to good today but you can still have a good time with it.
I only played its prequel and sequel, and heavily preferred the Prequel, for all of its aping Gran Turismo with license tests, reward cars for winning themed championships, all in a cartoony package on outlandish tracks.
As someone who played most of the games in the series recently, i think that game really feels too different for my taste. I dont know to describe it but after coming from the PS1 and GBA games this is like a departure of the series, which is fine because the series did get a lot varied especially in their spinoffs, but not in the mainline games. I guess if you are more of a realistic car lover you would like this game more than the others, but not me. It doesnt have the same charm as previous or newer games. Graphically its also very bland, Wonderful did look a ton better and that was on the PS1.
one of the best games ever really i remember going into gamestaion or cex in like 04 seeing the box are it was on that 2 for 30 pound and I got this cant remember the other thing but so many nights was just spent exloring loving everything about the game singing along with the songs the races was fun the vibes was fun it just had so much too it most likely the 1st rocket league ever too, I just love everything to do with thing game there was not a thing I disliked a true 10/10 for the money it costed for the fun I had real cars too like many of these kinda kid games the cars would be knock offs but I knew my skylines from gt and I just felt i was allowed to do whatever I wanted in this game, moden games like lets mgs v wanna say there open world but everything feels copied a pasted like oh this base is the same as this one guards do the samething in the same place blah blah but with this game i felt just pure freedom
I found this game in a weird grocery store as a kid for like $10 played the s*** out of it then forgot all about it until I was looking up ps2 games on ebay might get this game back cause I still have my ps2, If you have not found/played it already you should play "demolition derby arenas" another PS2 gem
This is one of the jankiest, silliest, most fun games I've ever played. In no other game can you play as a jet powered ladybird with monster truck wheels earning money by being sponsored by a coconut shop, not even the sequels could do that.
I just watched your Jaguar Blackjag Video, It actually is for sale in Germany right now😂 For 20K tho as it's not a working prototype... But I remember reading everywhere it actually had a V10, I'm so confused
Wow that's cool. Not sure what the story is there, maybe the XF10 version had the engine and the BlackJag was a show shell? Could've been something like that, or even multiple versions
There are so many thing to mention about this game. I would say the driving is pretty bad. I don't think I'm the only one who use the jetpack against the wall. Though you do progress and become a better driver.m since you can't do it all the time. The game is generous in so many other ways. City building, car customisation, collectible, achievements, random hidden stuff (hello aliens),minigames too much to list.
This was my childhood game. I would always play Road Trip after I would get back home from school and just be on it for hours on end!!!❤️
Same here dude!
One of my most magical childhood memories : Taking a long drive through the ocean late one in-game night, listening to “the minute” by push kings on my radio. Never could complete it cos i suck at racing games.
Choro Q was Cars before Pixar made Cars. 😂
In all seriousness, this Choro Q is the only PS2 Choro Q I’ve never played. I should try it someday, but I’d love to revisit and complete HG4 first… I sure hope I could stomach that dang Ghost House mission, though (it managed to be really creepy, and made kid me quit the game permanently - look it up!)
this game was so much fun.
A great retrospective. The game was available from the PlayStation store for the PS3. I played it around 2013. I loved some of the obscure car bodies.
I loved this game along with Gadget Racer
this was a formative game for me.
i bought the game expecting it to be like rumble racing bc of the us cover. while initially put off by the very poor performance of the stock performance, i was completely charmed by the sd look, over-world map, and the npcs.
As a Choro Q fan, I enjoy the video.
The car in the begining is litteraly me
This was a great game I loved it
If they can get the PS2 emulation to work, I would totally buy this on PS+
I was there 💪💪💪
Hg4 is my favourite but these games are great 😌
Oh wow, I have this game and still play it, it was always so entertaining and the music was amazing, the variety of the tracks were brilliant, you could go from inside a japanese temple to a snowy mountain to a tropical island and so much more, I can't believe people still play this, an the stamps and mini games added so much to the game, I remember I found it so creepy driving on the highway from Fuji town (I think it's called) to sandpolis at night lol, the open world was massive and big respect to the game for that but alot of the places that aren't proper locations you can teleport to are very bland but the game is old and the playstation 2 probably didn't have the power and the hardware to make a detailed open world. The racing is good but the ai having a set speed to eachother kinda ruined the racing a bit for me but I still liked it, I remember Diez in the GT40 being the hardest to beat followed by Peo in his testarosso and I remember there would be a garbage truck always in last play which I found funny, I can't remember the name of it though, so all in all I would rate this game an 8/10, I wouldn't say it holds up to good today but you can still have a good time with it.
massive world, the 1st time i got lost in the videogame and dont know what im doing to progress😂
I only played its prequel and sequel, and heavily preferred the Prequel, for all of its aping Gran Turismo with license tests, reward cars for winning themed championships, all in a cartoony package on outlandish tracks.
Gadget Racers, and Choro Q? In America
This game walked so Forza Horizon could run.
How do you get the monster truck tires?
one of the best games ever really i remember going into gamestaion or cex in like 04 seeing the box are it was on that 2 for 30 pound and I got this cant remember the other thing but so many nights was just spent exloring loving everything about the game singing along with the songs the races was fun the vibes was fun it just had so much too it most likely the 1st rocket league ever too, I just love everything to do with thing game there was not a thing I disliked a true 10/10 for the money it costed for the fun I had real cars too like many of these kinda kid games the cars would be knock offs but I knew my skylines from gt and I just felt i was allowed to do whatever I wanted in this game, moden games like lets mgs v wanna say there open world but everything feels copied a pasted like oh this base is the same as this one guards do the samething in the same place blah blah but with this game i felt just pure freedom
I found this game in a weird grocery store as a kid for like $10 played the s*** out of it then forgot all about it until I was looking up ps2 games on ebay might get this game back cause I still have my ps2, If you have not found/played it already you should play "demolition derby arenas" another PS2 gem
I never heard of this game but I have heard of Top Gear for the SNES.
Any way to get this for pc on emulator or tor re nt?
Does anyone know how to play this game now on pc?
PCSX2 Emulator, works perfectly
How do u get the glider
I can't remember tbh, I'm sure its online in a google search
This is one of the jankiest, silliest, most fun games I've ever played. In no other game can you play as a jet powered ladybird with monster truck wheels earning money by being sponsored by a coconut shop, not even the sequels could do that.
i played way too much of this game lol
The fucking low gravity races ruined me as a kid
🤨 what this even real
No, life is an illusion
Your making me wait your making me WAITTTTttttt.🥹
