In this video, you'll see how the following types of underlayment work on the sensitive areas of the roof:
    Felt Paper
    Synthetic

Synthetic is far superior product. I dont care how great a installer is at installing 30 pound or 15 pound felt. The 15/30 always tears or rips during installation even. Synthetic is Proven to help a roof breathe more. When roofs breathe just like us to withstand the elements. Haveing the best secured decking options is a must. Theres a lot of things going on with roofs during installs. Things get dropped nails being installed newer felt can withstand these giving you a more secure underlayment system then older technology. Would you wear a plastic rain coat in a hurricane? Or a heavy duty coat old school roofing ways are in the past. Develop your knowledge and get with the industry. Great video keep it up!

Gaf company has admitted a synthetic felt paper will take 20% of the life away on your roof. Roofers love the synthetic because it’s so light and easier to install

Maybe they're just saying that so you can pay cheap and then have to pay big money to replace your roof with the increase on materials.

I understand the benefits of Ice and Water shield. I don't understand the benefit of synthetic underlayment. Underlayment is held in place by thousands of nails once the shingles are on, so it doesn't need to be rip proof. Felt can rip, but not often unless you don't know what you are doing. Even then, another piece over the rip is sufficient. Synthetic does nothing for the roof once the shingles are on. It is NOT "another line of defense." There are thousands of nail holes, none of which are sealed by the synthetic underlayment, and every hole will leak if there is water under the shingles, just like with felt, so there is no benefit. Furthermore, it is impermeable. That is not good. Any humidity in the attic will slowly seep through the decking and collect on the impermeable synthetic underlayment where it will proceed to break down the decking. Felt is permeable and will allow that moisture to escape. Lastly, the felt does dry out over time because the asphalt in the felt is absorbed by the shingles, extending their life. The life of asphalt shingles over synthetic underlayment is reduced by 20% because there is no reservoir of asphalt in the underlayment to feed the shingles as they dry out. So best to use a permeable underlayment that is asphalt based..

Can you use Ice and Water Shield all over the entire roof in place of synthetic or felt??

@detaronrockydoo6957 yes but it's not necessary unless the pitch of the roof is at or below a 4:12 pitch.

I will agree and disagree with you here. Agree with the water and ice shield. Disagree with the synthetic underlayment! 30 pound felt is far superior to synthetic when properly installed and covered in a timely manner. I have removed 50 year old roofs that were installed properly and the 30 pound felt was completely intact and still reasonably playable. In fact, the felt under the laps was still almost like new! Synthetic underlayment is lighter, faster and stronger when exposed for the sloppy installers. However, when installed correctly, a quality 30 pound felt will out perform the synthetic. Also worth noting, we have the opportunity to look at roofs that are over a 100 years old with 30 pound felt. I won't be around to see synthetic products in 100 years. We use a lot of water and ice shield and carefully double layer the 30 pound felt and have never had a "come back"...

Roofing technology is constantly changing. Far more roofs done improperly with unsecure 15/30 pound underlayments. Synthetic allows for more ventalation keeping attics cooler its Proven. Old school felt is a thing of the past and time to get with the times

@@jamielotz780 OK Jamie! It's OK to jump out there and insult me. Please forgive me if in any way I insulted you. I have been doing this for over 50 years and am totally open to new technologies. However, that being said, what is currently being offered is only cheaper, lighter, faster, and not better for the home owner or the future home owner. There is no need for you and I to further argue this. Hopefully others will have the opportunity to think for themselves what might be the better option! Only time will truly settle this debate and difference. Thanks for your input!

@@danielstover3029 ok! Well synethic is a better product. It does 10 sq where your felt does 4 sq. Yes synthic cost more. Synthetic secures the decking properly. Where 15/30 pound felt rips tears even looking at it!!! Did you know that synethic felt helps a roof breathe???? Did you also know that box vents are less efficient then ridge vent.... I know they used this stuff 50 years ago 15/30 pound felt ya its Proven true it worked but there's better options out there. Be the best offer the best and you thrive. Roofing is all about breathing and functionality nothing more nothing less... If we were in a hurricane would you want a trash bag as a coat. Or a thick coat to keep you dry??
