For no apparent reason I collect extracts and flavorings, at this point I have peppermint, lemon, almond, coconut, and of course vanilla. I'm not sure why I'm proud of that, but I am.
For those wanting to make this in 2018, one very crucial thing to making this is to NOT let it cool too much. The first time I made it I let it cool for about 20 minutes and when I started pulling it, it got really hard and ripped my gloves. I still tried to pull it and it started breaking off and flying everywhere, so I gave up and threw it away. Tonight I made it again and it’s perfect, just like the video, and tastes amazing! I added peppermint oil and strawberry extract to mine. I let it cool for maybe 10 minutes (this really depends on the temperature in your house), and I pulled it for about 15 minutes.
So I tried this out and it worked pretty well. A note, if you're considering skipping individually wrapping all the pieces, DON'T SKIP IT. They stick to almost anything.
It would! I have found that lower temperatures also require more stretching however. 250 degrees should be a moderately soft taffy. 255 would be similar to a Laffy Taffy candy bar, or a little harder than Starburst. 260-265 is getting to the point where you can't chew it unless you warm it up first. I prefer 255 since it is relatively quick to pull, and has a bit of resistance when eating. One more thing, when you're getting close to 240 degrees, be cautious because that's the point at which candy quickly increases in temperature. This means that it's easy to sail past your target by 10 or 15 degrees and not even notice it. So I recommend heating it very very slowly after it gets to 240. That way you're sure of your thermal destination. :-)
I tried it the first time stopping at 250f, letting it cool till it could be handled, I stretched it till it was opaque but turned into hard candy. I tried it again stopping at a lower 235f and the same thing happened. Any suggestions? I don't want to go too low on temp and it not setup properly.
I've been making many batches of taffy over the last several weeks, obviously I think its fun. One thing I can attest to, is that making candy is a fickle project. Even using 2 thermometers and trying very hard to get the perfect temp, the results are not consistent. I applaud all candy makers out there! :)) So fun and tasty!
I would LOVE to be able to make French cream mints. Fanny Farmer, Sees all the bigger chocolate stores have the creamy chocolate mint centers dipped in chocolate and usually pair them with ones dipped in mint white chocolate dyed green. It's that mint creamy center that I just haven't been able to replicate.
ShesThe Beth Nougat is essenatially beating egg whites till they're light and fluffy then incorporating toffee/caramel, then mixing in nuts and berries and anything else you want in it. Well, thats how I've made it before, other people may have other recipies
Claire McKinley Huh, and here I thought nougat was a complicated mixture of magic and ambrosia of the gods stirred by angel hands. It's so good. I love nougat.
I followed your recipe and my taffy turned out great! Really sticky so I’m glad you mentioned putting butter on everything. One thing I would change is increasing the flavoring next time.
just a tip, you don't want to put the entire dram into the candy mixture because they're highly concentrated so you don't need to much to add a good amount of flavor
I was thinking the same thing I’m like there’s no way you need that entire bottle of flavor extract for a batch that’s not even that big. They don’t sell candy oils to be like one serving Lmao that would be stupid. You only need like 1/8 tsp it even says HIGHLY CONCENTRATED on the back of the package lmao
I don't know why this video appeared, but I do crafts with my grandkids and just last week my grandson was saying how much he liked saltwater taffy. I have to do this! Thank you!
Hi, this looks so yummy! Question, did you double or triple the recipe for the video? I ask because the quantities look like much more in the video than the recipe calls for. Thank you!
I was wondering why she added actual cotton candy if she still used all the sugar, food coloring, and cotton candy flavoring? So what was the purpose of adding it?
I think I would like the cotton candy flavored taffy best... If I made my own taffy though I would make something fruity like watermelon, orange, lemon or strawberry just because that's what I like and I also wanted to request mirror cake recipe there are tons out there but cookies cupcakes and cardio is always the best 😊
Thank you so much of having these step by step homemade candies because, every time I tried to search for how you can make candy on Google and it never pops up like the ingredients and I have to go to a website to website to website so I want to thank you for having these videos and the gredients on there cuz it makes it easy on us and I just want to say thank you so much!!!!!! ♡♡♡♡♡
Hello! I was wondering, how would I go about cleaning the pot afterwards if I do decide to make this? It seems rather labor intensive. Any tips on how?
put hot water in it immediately and let it sit until you're ready to wash it will help a lot in the clean up process. You can do this for anything you make with sticky left in the pot :)
Great video I love your stuff! I was hoping you could tackle a candy my great grandma used to make (rarely)... Penuche...??? It’s kinda like fudge but different, and it’s deliciously brown sugary! Thanks for your time and consideration.
it came out awesome! not as sour as I wanted but I'm going to make more batches! I went to 255 but I think I'll stop at 250 next time...it's really awesomely chewy!

Phoebe Baisch I'm proud of you for that, too! I'd do the same
I tend to collect them too, at the moment I have vanilla, lemon, peppermint, raspberry, orange, strawberry, and almond.
Phoebe Baisch I am getting some! And they are cotton candy, grape, cherry, lemonade, and bubblegum!
I have cream cheese and butter flavoring also... I like to add it to my sugar cookies.
J None Cream cheese flavoring? That sounds good! I have strawberry, lemon, mint, butter, peppermint, caramel, maple, and vanilla.

I just made cherry taffy and it was a lot of work, but its delicious and worth it! Now to try the carmels.
Do you have to pull it? What would happen if you didn't pull it
+CiCi LPS it would stay dark and hard.
Watching you pull the taffy was so satisfying...😌
what's the difference between taffee and toffee?
.Clarabelle Lim Taffee is sugary and sweet with tons of different flavors and toffee tastes more like caramel.
Clarabelle Lim if you've ever had a Heath bar, that would be toffe
Heath bars and almond rocas have toffee in the middle. Toffee is sort of like crunchy caramel.
Taffy is chewy and toffee is crunchy usually.
IDK
Omg I just made mine and I followed every step it came out so good. Thanjs
taffy=edible slime
taffy is more like edible putty

boil some water in it then clean
since it is mostly sugar I suppose you just soak it in water.
put hot water in it immediately and let it sit until you're ready to wash it will help a lot in the clean up process. You can do this for anything you make with sticky left in the pot :)

does the pan have to be metal or can I use glass and how would I add peanut butter in the center of the taffy?
A glass pan works fine too....to add the peanut butter you would just have to make a well, and then wrap the taffy around it.

making a batch right now with cherry kool aid and whisky sour mix as flavoring...waiting for it to cool so I can pull it...looks good so far!!

i made taffy using this recipe, but i wanna give help and or need clarification on some things.
(i didnt watch the whole video so i dont know if these were mentioned)
when pulling the taffy, i learned to pull it slowly. if you pull too fast, itll get stringy and messy, especially if the taffys still warm.
what i realized from my experience...
the recipe says to heat the mixture until 255 F°, but there's no estimated time duration for that. I know stoves and pots are all made different, but I couldnt tell if I was burning it or not. I had my candy thermometer in the mixture, and decided to settle it at 251 because impatience grew within me.
After I finished pulling my taffy, I tried a "demo" piece that i had separated from the larger portion to practice my pulling. When I bit into it, the candy felt harder than what I expected out of any taffy I've ever eaten. It's like a hard candy if it was left in the sun.
I need to know if i did anything wrong? I would make it again with other flavors, but I wanna be able to get some help on what I did wrong. I suspected it had something to do with either the cook time or the time I had to pull the taffy.

umm that is more than a table spoon of butter!!
Im soo confused!
acctually sometimes the with of the butter stick is wide so wen you melt it it actually measures 1 Tablespoon i know it can mislead you

I just learned that tablespoon sizes are different based on country, im assuming this is American measurement (along with imperial for the other ingredients)

It makes me cry that you have to use an entire bottle of flavoring.
HanyouxFromxHell you probably don't have to as that seems like a lot of flavoring
It depends on a few factors I'm sure. How strong you want the flavor, how big your recipe, etc,but still, flavoring like that is usually very potent >.
HanyouxFromxHell you could just half the recipe. That's what i did and it worked.
That's still half the bottle...
