Ive lived in Las Vegas for 43 years. Its turning into East Los Angeles. This was a great place to live in till about 2000. Now, with the influx of bad drivers from California, its time to leave.

I’m from NY and I much rather drive there than in Vegas. Tiny roads and all. In Vegas they close off lanes for construction, and there’s no work being done. It’s beyond annoying. And yes the drivers are terrible. Also some of the red lights are unreasonably long.

If you like visiting the spectacular national parks of the American Southwest, Las Vegas is a great place to call home. You're within a half-day's drive to Zion, Bryce Canyon, either rim of the Grand Canyon and Death Valley. It's also within a half-day's drive to the beaches of southern California.

My favorite parts of the Vegas area are two wonderful parks just outside the city. On the western outskirts is Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, and the Valley of Fire State Park, which is 45 miles NE on I-15. Both are great for scenery and hiking, take plenty of water along to get you through those hot desert trails!

I just moved from Vegas after living there for 8 years. Never going to move back. It wasn’t too bad when I first moved there but it seemed to change so quickly and not for the better. School district is one of the worst in the country. The crime is getting very bad and is filtering into even the nicer neighborhoods. Most people are rude. There is no sense of community. It’s not family/kid friendly. I’m much happier in my new state and in my new city.

    • @sexygeek8996

I'm single with no kids. I'd rather have low property taxes than good schools. Not being family friendly means I don't have to deal with other people's kids as much. Crime is getting worse everywhere and many places are much worse than Las Vegas. I don't have to shovel snow or mow a lawn and there is no state income tax.

NV is currently being invaded by trashy out-of-state transplants & the town is getting worse. 30 year Vegas veteran here, and boy has it changed since we first landed at McCarran Intl back in early 1992.
I'm not going to go into anything said, and everything Jimmy touched base on is pretty spot on.
The Metro area back then was just over 800,000 and today we're 2,231,647.
...Jimmy did forgot to mention two notable facts. 1) That Vegas is home to the fifth largest school district in the nation, CCSD (Clark County School District), with a student population of some 325,000 students across the 8,000 square miles of Clark County. ...and 2) Clark County comprises of 73.55% of Nevada's population of 3,034,392. The other 16 counties combined only have a total population of 802,745.

Even though I'm not fond of the place, it will always have a special spot in my heart. My son got in on the early 2000's housing boom, worked hard and saved a lot. When he couldn't do that anymore, he went to school and became a dealer. UNLV hospital gave him great care in the last years of his life, darn good care! Right up to the very end.
While not my favorite place by far, my son loved it, did well there, got married there (his widow still lives there), and got excellent medical care all the way to the "fullness of his life". I very well understand people who both do and don't like the area, but even just talking about it will always put a smile on my face.

I lived there from 1996 (age 23) to 2004 (age 31). I learned the majority of my life lessons within that 8 year time frame. I could write a book about my time there, but I won't...The best thing for me during that time was I got my Culinary School (degree) Education while living there. All I have to say is: 1. Remember those big fancy hotels didn't build themselves, take a nice look but keep your money in your wallet cuz you won't win there. 2. If you want good food and decent prices and want to dump your money into a machine, cuz you might win, hit a local hotel/casino (a station casino, Sam's Town, AZ Charlie's) 3. keep your money/cards in your front pocket, and guard them with your life. And always be aware of your surroundings at all times, especially on the strip and in hotel parking garages, 4. There are scam artists everywhere looking for someone to rob, so if someone comes up to you and says give me 20 bucks and Ill come back in 10 minutes with 50, DON'T!! (I saw that happen so many times) And 5. Don't give $$ to the panhandlers standing on the streets with their signs asking. Those guys make in one day what most people make in a week. Good video, but the data is a little old.
It's funny, I never heard of the restaurant you mentioned.
I used to live in Las Vegas for about 26 years and recently moved to Texas, and I have no intention of ever going back.
Las Vegas has been invaded by Los Angeles, and they have brought their gangs, crime, drugs, & politics with them.
My previous home used to be a nice neighborhood, now it is a graffiti ridden ghetto with gunshots heard on a nightly basis.
Cost of living is also going up, one of my friends who stayed behind says that his rent is increasing by 33%, with some other properties going up as much as 66%. Then there is the fact that the city is not self-sustainable and heavily relies on the transportation industry, with the gas prices going up the cost of goods and services is also on the steep rise.
Their governor has been moving in lockstep with the COVID policies of California, destroying the tourist industry and bankrupting the state.
One of the things that really worried me, they are in the middle of a massive drought. Lake Mede, their primary water supply, is at a record low. Well below 33% of it's total capacity, but the housing projects are still being built and they are sending millions of gallons of water downstream to Los Angeles.

Las Vegas is still going thru its teenage years, and when it becomes more of an adult, it may be attractive enough to return to. For that to happen, a world class art museum and a light rail system.

the first hotel-casino is downtown and it's address is #1 Fremont St. Now called the Golden Gate, it was originally called The Nevada Hotel, and opened in 1906. In the early 1950's? it was purchased by some Italian American men from San Francisco, thus the eventual name of Golden Gate, although they originally named it Sal Sagev, Las Vegas spelled backward. One of these Italian American men bought out the others, and last I knew, his sons still owned and operated the Golden Gate Hotel & Casino. I know this because the Golden Gate was where I got my first job in Las Vegas, when I moved there in 1993. It was a great place to work, and I learned a lot of history about Las Vegas downtown, which was already going strong before any strip hotel or casino.
PS: Las Vegas was originally settled by Mormons, after the native Americans, and the Spanish priests.

I lived in "The 9th island" in 1995-9. North Vegas was talked down, but I had friends whom lived there. Tacos de Mexico was a good drive in chain, which are all over the Southwest. The pace of change there is/was discomfiting. I had a nice visit there in 2005. Vegas is a bit resented there, sort of a tail that wags the dog scenario. Like how the rural high desert versus the metropolis thing throughout the Western U.S.

When we returned home they wanted to know when we could all go back. They said 5here was so much they had not seen and wanted to visit again. I have to throw in a plug for my favorite casino the South Point(largest non strip hotel). Same here. I ventured there quite often in my 20’s. But the last time I was there with a friend visiting their brother I got introduced to his two daughters who where high end prostitues. Apparently this is happening to many working families where both parents are working raising kids old enough to be left at home alone. It’s a promised high end life they get sucked into and leave their homes for it.
Having young girls at the time I learned about this, I would not ever recommend raising a family there.
Well that’s one other thing that’s up with Las Vegas NV anyway.

Vegas is reluctant to report the deaths of people jumping off the roofs of the casinos.
People jumping off the Hoover Dam overpass. You don't hear anything about what's really going on in Vegas.
It's all Glitz and glamour. They try to make it look good but having lived here for thirty years you get to know the inside story that is never reported along with the casinos getting robbed

I moved to Las Vegas in 1980 and stayed for 34 years. I stayed as long as I did because I had two businesses there. I moved to Oregon in 2014 and I have absolutely loved it. I tried Vegas last year for a few months and the city has turned into a sewer. Too many people, too many unfriendly people, too many people who dont care. Its dirty, full of homeless and ruthless people. I always hated the phrase 'sin city' and as a resident in Las Vegas, I've felt that this phrase gives people permission to do crap they wouldnt do at home, not thinking about the people who live here, just doing outrageous and illegal stuff every day of the week. Nevada has never brought itself up from being close to dead last in quality of public school education in the past 40 years. They've never focused on what is good for the people who live there, only what is good for the casinos, good for construction, and for sports teams. We never needed sports teams, we needed good public schools and universities, and more community among the people there. It will never change.

I'm in Vegas now, thinking to go back to FL. Lived in Tampa and Gainesville... really wish I stayed in Gainesville tbh. But I'm considering Orlando. Not really feeling Vegas...just not my kind of city, trying to give it a chance but there is things I just can't get over...this is kindof trivial but I HATE how they handle vehicles here, I got spoiled how cheap it is in FL and how little you have to do to keep your car on the road every year, being able to get 2 year tags for cheaper than what it cost here for 1 year, just got an insurance quote for Vegas and was pretty annoyed to find out it's gonna go higher, and that's sad because I have insurance from Tampa, and I thought my insurance was already high. No matter where I live I always want to go back to FL. And I'm from this region, I'm from Colorado, but FL always calling me back.
And yeah people drive crazy af here, I thought FL drivers were wild...nah, these people are dangerous on normal residential roads, going 60+ in a 45 is the norm here apparently.

Vegas is really hard to navigate when trying to find things other than casino's. I didn't see a single club like you see on TV but we're not late night people anyway plus I heard it was like $1000.00 per drink. We couldn't figure out how to get to any of the different food spots we wanted to try and we only found one buffet called mainstreet but we had to take a bus to get to it. Maybe next time we'll drive. FYI, charge everyone who asks for a cigarette for a dollar, didn't take me long to figure that out and theyre $$$ on the strip.
