Rex begonias, which I love, like to dry out between waterings. My first plant almost died. Rather than throwing it out, I let it dry out and it started to produce new shoots. Now it's growing happily and looks beautiful. Good luck
The Rex begonias don't love growing outdoors, mine loved it in the terrarium, but when I moved it out of the terrarium it declined and it is not looking that good now in the greenhouse. So my recommendation is to grow it in a terrarium with light over indoors only. Good luck with your Rex begonias.
Enjoyed your garden tour. I started a new mini Food Forest cum Tropical Pleasure Garden this spring here in Florida and opted for a white "puff ball tree". That is what we affectionately call the Persian Silk Tree around here. It's so pretty and silky you just want to pet the little puffballs every time you walk by:). Totally carefree, we have two red ones already, but I chose a white flowering variety to visually cool the new area during our brutal summers. I agree those Fatsias are fun plants. Now I'll have to add at least two. I suspect my mystery plant in another part of the garden may well be a Fatsia - it has those same leaves but they are variegated, Irish green and creamy white. I may try a cutting once the Canopy is a bit denser - the bananas and Alocasias got huge since March (the bananas have pups - one pup is already 8ft tall, but all in all it is still a rather sparse garden area. I've added about twenty new plants this fall not counting a Rio Grande cherry tree, a Macadamia nut tree, an Australian Mintbush and three coffee bushes. I succeeded in growing three Pride of Barbados from seed - with cherry/rose and vanilla blooms. I'm thrilled about those, now I just hope my Ricinus "Carmencita Red" will grow from seed too - we'll see. Anyway, thanks for an inspiring tour - awesome garden.
I love the silk tree, I’m after something to go in between my Musa Bajoo, Dicksonia antarctica as they are getting hit by a strong SW wind and the harsh sun after about 2pm. Great work by the way, I have spent about 4 years bringing my little taste of paradise together. I’ll seed you some pics sometimes. 👍🏻😊
could listen to your voice all day and the way you describe plants,i grow lots of rex begonias but keep in greenhouse or indoors need good airflow due to mildew.barracott plants sell nice begonias eg beatrice haddall ,mishima silver gryphon ,metallica which grow easily outside through the summer just have as houseplants in winter, hope that helps
I love your new videos, but I also find myself rewatching some of the old ones. I actually had better luck with the Rex begonia this past year in my greenhouse. I might be that they like the late summer/fall better when it’s not as warm in the greenhouse. I had it closed up and my begonia were in there until almost December before I put them into the basement for overwintering.
rhus is called sumac here in Canada. its native to Canada btw, very cold hardy (im in CAN zone 4 (USDA zone 3 equivalent), it grows in the ditch and abandoned lots). crazy how in the right context, a northern plant can look tropical.
P.s a video about what you do in your garden in autumn would be fab, be interested to know what bulbs you go for for spring and how you protect your plants which stay out.
great video gave me so much info. as i only have a very small strip of front garden and im going to plant it all with tropical plants have already bought a lemon tree a dicsonia antartica 3ft. trunk an olive tree a fatsia japonica spiders webb and a laburnam cytisus going to get some banana muso and hope it looks the part underplanted with ferns, hostas etc. any advice would be appreciated.
Hi thanks for sharing your knowledge, you got yourself a new subbi, i'm just starting out in changing my garden into a tropical theme so i'm a novice, i live in the midlands and was wondering where you live.
Eu moro no Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, tenho um jardim, compro muitas plantas, conheço muitas plantas brasileiras porém nunca vi essas plantas no Brasil. Somente o Abutilon. Você tem plantas brasileiras que nem os brasileiros conhecem!
Do you grow your trees in containers - the beautiful silk tree, Indian bean tree and Rhus? I’ve read that Rhus produce lots of suckers. I’m only just starting out with my garden and I’ve found this video sh helpful. Thank you.
Some of my trees are in the ground others are in containers. My Rhus tree is in the ground and has been for 4 years now, it doesn't sucker much for me. 👍🙂
HELLO LOVE THE VIDEO THANK YOU. TELL ME I STAY IN SOUTH AFRICA AND WEATHER IS NOT TOO BAD HERE. WHAT I LIKE TOO KNOW CAN I GROW INDOOR PLANTS IN OUTSIDE GARDEN. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK. KIND REGARDS SHAUN
Hi love your videos and information.can I ask I purchased Indian bean tree it’s in a pot can I keep it in a pot also when do I start watering it as it looks really dry with no sign of life at mo.😩
Can you give us a bit more information about the maintenance of the garden. For example do you use any manure or just chicken pellets and seaweed liquid. How do you water do you have an irrigation system.?
Great video! My garden is basically full sun. Did you start your garden with the canopy plants then part shade plants and finally added full shade ones?
Thanks for watching and for your kind words 👍🙂 yes I planted the canopy first so that it had lots of time to grow, the first year I had lots of other plants that enjoyed full sun. As the canopy has developed over the years I’ve been able to add more and more shade loving plants. I’ve got loads of videos documenting my gardens creation from day 1 so feel free to check those videos out too, hopefully they’ll help you out 🙂🪴🌴🌱🌿
Hey Craig. Thanks for the great videos (also the little castor beans I ordered from you last year are now towering over me in their spiky iridescent glory; the best £2.50 I ever spent!). I'd love to see a video about an ideal soil preparation for a tropical garden. I am planning to make a big border from scratch and want to give the plants the best possible start. I know that it should be rich and free draining, but what are the best things to use to make that happen? I heard the forest floor is slightly acidic, should that be emulated? How deep do you need to dig? Are there any fertilisers or soil improvers that would help in particular etc...I'd also be interested in tropical garden design - what plants work well together, how to make a satisfying naturalistic effect - how to plan a border out from scratch etc...
I'm happy the seeds have grown well for you 😁👍🌱🌿🌴 there are so many great suggestions here, I'll deffinately try to answer them all for you in a future video. Thanks for watching 😁🌱🌿🌴🌱🌴🌱🌿🌴🌱
I kept this one in its pot and put it in my parents heated greenhouse. It lost its leaves, I didn't water it until spring and then it started growing again. I hope that helps! 🌿🌱🌴😁
Have you tried Impatiens Psittacina ? Do you take them inside to a greenhouse over Winter? Is it harder near the Coast because of the salty air? These and many more questions yet to come haha, well done it all looks beautiful, I love the canopy plants, the Persian Albizia is stunning!
1)Not yet. 2)I haven't had them for a winter yet, but I'll probably take cuttings to get them through. 3) salty air can be a problem, but normally only after a bad storm. 🙂🌴🌿🌱 Thanks for watching! 😁
@@GrowParadise I looked on Wikipedia and you're right it's an allergen. It's been classed as a noxious weed here in Australia. So I guess that's why it's almost impossible to find.
Been very busy in the garden, sometimes it’s just easier and more relaxed enjoying jobs in the garden without a camera in one hand. 😀 I’ll be back at it with a big update by the end of the month 🤞🌺🌴🌴🌴🌴

Bru add heaps of banana plants. Fire video 🔥🔥🔥🔥💯🥓
Love your videos and garden, your voice is very relaxing ☺
Do you know a gardenplant that has a similar leafshape as a philodendron narrow?
Hi thanks for sharing your knowledge, you got yourself a new subbi, i'm just starting out in changing my garden into a tropical theme so i'm a novice, i live in the midlands and was wondering where you live.
Great garden. Do try getting rid of slugs, they are eating up the leaves badly .
Thanks, my garden is organic so for me I leave the slugs for the frogs and toads 👍😁

I copied all the names ,very useful. off to the garden centre i go . One question I have is , how many of your plants need winterising indoors etc
Not many at all! The gingers and Alocasias and Brugmansia, I leave most other things outside 👍🌱

Absolutely! I would say just experiment with the plants and see what works for your garden.
Your bright red canna is called Canna Durban.
Hi love your videos and information.can I ask I purchased Indian bean tree it’s in a pot can I keep it in a pot also when do I start watering it as it looks really dry with no sign of life at mo.😩
Hi, I bought my tree from a local garden centre. They should only just be coming into leaf now.
i am living in borneo island,i dont recognise most of the plants name but i do have few of them here
Can you give us a bit more information about the maintenance of the garden. For example do you use any manure or just chicken pellets and seaweed liquid. How do you water do you have an irrigation system.?

i got the urvilleana here..little bit different tho
The first tree we call a puff puff tree (Caribbean)
I love that name!!! I think I might have to use that too, I really enjoy learning all the different names for plants. 🌱👍
Do u have to keep them indoors... I live in US in northeast part. Winter is harsh here. Lovely garden.
I take cuttings from a few plants to get them through winter but lots of my garden are hardy perennials down to about -5°C. 😁
I'm amazed how well it looks considering the clay soil you had to start with. Do you fertilize or add compost and mulch every year?
Something I've found is when fertilising bananas, some leaves die off
I mulched with mushroom compost for the first 2 years, now I just add some chicken manure pellets into the hole when I am planting in spring 🙂🌿🌴

Hi Craig, How would you overwinter Colocasia Thai Giant? . I have one growing in the ground, which is about the same size as yours.
I kept this one in its pot and put it in my parents heated greenhouse. It lost its leaves, I didn't water it until spring and then it started growing again. I hope that helps! 🌿🌱🌴😁

@@GrowParadise Want to see the puppy toooo ! 🐶
Your fig tree is to close to walls and can easily damage than. Btw love your garden.
Thanks for watching! My fig tree is in a pot so nothing to worry about 😁 the heat of that south facing wall really helps the fruit ripen too 👍
I am new to your blog , can you tell what zone you are in
Hi! I’m in zone 9, down on the UK south coast 🙂🌿
What is best soil for tropical plants
I use mushroom compost in my garden, it great for lush green leaves 🙂👍🌴🌿🌱
Hi, what zone, country are you in?
My garden is zone 9 👍😁
I was always led to believe that Rhus trees are toxic and shouldn't be used in gardens
Some people are allergic I think, not everybody though 🙂
@@GrowParadise I looked on Wikipedia and you're right it's an allergen. It's been classed as a noxious weed here in Australia. So I guess that's why it's almost impossible to find.
The silk tree is invasive and difficult to controll. Best advice DO NO PLANT!
Not in this country (UK), it's fine and has not been categorised as invasive.
Show the garden not just the plant type.
I’ve got 3 years of videos on my channel documenting the whole creation of the garden, your welcome to have a look through those 👍🌱
He still hasn't posted for 24 days
Been very busy in the garden, sometimes it’s just easier and more relaxed enjoying jobs in the garden without a camera in one hand. 😀 I’ll be back at it with a big update by the end of the month 🤞🌺🌴🌴🌴🌴
Great, really looking forward to your next upload
Mine are Violets and begonias 👎
Brugmansia. ALL PARTS OF THIS PLANT ARE TOXIC!
Yup
