I’m 68, retired, and a new pipe smoker. Have listened to dozens & dozens of TH-cam instructional videos. Yours has been the most enjoyable so far.
Why? Because you spoke knowledgeably & continuously for 15 minutes without lighting a pipe!
Most vidoes are talk, smoke smoke smoke, talk, relight, talk, smoke smoke relight, talk, relight relight, smoke smoke talk, relight smoke smoke…you get the idea.
And even after you lit your pipe - you quickly got back to talking & supplying great insights.
    Thank you.
    New Subscriber Gary.

Thank you , great video . Have only been serious about pipe smoking for about 3 months . Bought my first pipes 20 years ago but could never get off the cigarettes . Live in southwest Michigan and all the pipe shops are gone these days around me but like you said there is a wealth of knowledge on TH-cam , that includes you 🙂
Really enjoying MM cob pipes right now .
    Thanks again

Just a bit late to this but wanted to comment. Great advice! I wish I had found your video a month or two ago when I began my journey into the Pipe. It would have saved me hours of time I spent researching pipes, tobaccos and techniques. I ended up doing exactly you say, I bought two Missouri Meerschaums, one being a $7 Missouri Pride and the other a $20 Diplomat. I pretty much almost ruined the Missouri Pride because I was still learning to pack and how to smoke. I like my cigars. A month into it, I think I finally got the pack and smoking down as I'm enjoying a full bowl with only maybe one relight. I might be ready to move onto a Peterson or Savinelli without fear that I'll ruin them. Thank you for this and I'm hoping more new pipe smokers find this straight away. Cheers from the USA!

You should grow your own tobacco. I've been curing leaves in the sun and it only takes a couple of days until they turn into delicious smoking tobacco good for cigars or pipes. That's the whole reason I'm getting into pipe smoking, it's more convenient and enjoyable than rolling cigars and paper cigarettes - and I've never liked the fixed size and the wastage involved with these rolled tobacco sticks.

Thanks for taking time for sharing this very information, all correct, nonetheless when it comes to tobacco choices and pipes I wouldn't necessarily suggest smoking those great British OTC classics to rookies, even I wanted to do so, Why one may ask?Cuz those do pack quite a punch of nicotine and are perhaps too rich in taste, instead, some light to medium semi' aromatic a la Danish mod might be a better choice, granted often those are more prone to bite but lighter in nic and taste not so pronounced ,as for pipes I'd opt for refurbished estates or medium price range Straight billiard, Blakemar briars in mind ,or parker /Gbds , Best Greets, and thanks for these valuable pieces of information, Paul

Thanks for uploading this video. Great info for new pipe smokers. I have smoked a pipe since about 2006 and smoked cigars before that (mostly Castella Classics and King Edward Coronets that were easily found at supermarkets). I now have six pipes including two Falcons and don't ever spend much on pipes or tobacco. Pipe smoking can be taken in whatever direction someone wants to take it in and this video is a really good way for people to grasp the early stages of getting into smoking a pipe. Big fan of Squadron Leader, Skiff Mixture and Peterson Standard Mixture and I also keep a fair amount of a cherry aromatic (Gawith Hoggarth) amongst my tobaccos as that's what I started with. I have a tin of Chieftain Blacksmiths Blend on the way to me that you have reviewed - look forward to trying it out. Cheers!

Nice vid. I have just taken up the pipe again after 40+ years, started in my late teens into mid twenties. Unfortunately I gave up the pipe and started on rolling my own cigs. I gave up smoking altogether 7 years ago and every day since I could kill a ciggy. I started using snuff a while ago and it seemed to take the edge off the craving. The pipe seems to be the answer though, I'm enjoying myself trying the baccies that are available today, some I like, some are meh! I'm heading towards the trad English blends. I think contemplation and possibly meditation are a few of the advantages. Sorry about the waffle!

Excellent advise. My grandfather bought me my first pipe..a basket..
When I lived with him aged 16. I'm 48 now !. He always had a pipe in his hand. With st Bruno flake:) went back to pipe smoking a few years ago when my late mother was dieing..she loved the smell! Even when she was unconscious at the end it was obvious she could smell the St Bruno on me.
I'd definitely recommend a Falcon of some sort for a beginner or anyone really. My favorite is the Coolway 81 church warden. Falcons are
    Affordable and very good IMHO.
Nasal snuff is another interesting avenue towards enjoying nicotine:)
Vv cheap and gives me a nice "kick" but snuff is a whole different subject..

Have you tried fine cut a cigar and smoke it through the pipe? Does it work as pipetobacco? Besides smoking cigar i have for a longvtime made my own snus, so i am familiar with virginia, burley, latika snd such. I often blend in some Havanna tobacco. I would imagine they taste great as pioetobacco. In your opinion, what is best with the taste of pipes vs cigars?

    • @thematchbox55
      @thematchbox55  ปีที่แล้ว

Oh absolutely. If I get a cigar that doesn't smoke well I'll chip it up and add it to some plain tobacco that I find isn't good on its own I find it works well. I usually finish the last bit of my cigars in a pipe just pop the butt in the bowl and carry on but be careful as you can get a big nicotine hit. That's a hard question as you can get good and bad in both so I'm still 50/50 on that one. As much as I like cigars and vice versa it's always good to break it up from time to time. 👍

My father recieved a pipe as a gift over 25 years ago. He only smoked it a handful of times. When my parents divorced I took it but only dabbled with it. Now, 28 years later I’ve decided to pull it out and give it a try. It is a Jobey Pride 200 very nice or seems to me as I don’t know. Anyway as a beginner I’ve been using aromatics, my current fav is Tinderbox After Dinner. Anyway my question is, for a beginner, what is a good tobacco that isn’t an aromatic? Thanks.

Great stuff and congratulations on entering the world of pipe smoking. My favourite non aromatic is g l pease Westminster (if you're in the states) as it is a nice introduction to latakia and oriental blends.
