i remember being so disappointed they went with the lame dallara instead of the DP01 post "merger" .....DP01 never had raced on an oval but the designer said they were oval crash tested and exceeded all safety requirements.
The DP01 was never to race on an Oval, that was clear from the beginning. Yes they crashed it, but there never was any proper development to make it drive good at ovals. As far as I know the suspension would need a complete overhaul to be able to adjust it to the extreme values that oval cars need. They where amazing for European Formula style racing, the standing starts showed that, but they weren’t the car for an American series that includes ovals. I still wish we would have continued with the Indycar of the 90s with all those chassis and engine manufacturers. It was the best period for the modern style car, just like the late 60s and early 70s where the best for all the great experimental cars and the 80s where for the bulky ground effect generation cars. Imagine we would have the races of the 90s today, oh what a joy!

What an awesome way to go out...wickedly cool fast cars the DP01 so much cooler that the subsequent Indy Car Dallaras (remains true today) the first paddle shifts and STANDING STARTS....which young Mr Will Power absolutely crushed, P7 to P3. To this day it irks me that Tony G's absurd backwards vision and power play for this sport held it back in America for so many years. It's come a long way back, but doubt it will ever be like an early 90's Long Beach GP...THAT was one of the top, most exciting motorsport events in the world. And cheers to the teams that picked up the CART pieces to make Champ Car as good as it was against all odds.
What a great team was Newman Hass racing, I can't understand why the team decided to shutdown after 2011, look at Dale Coyne Racing, still alive after all the turbulence between CART/ChampCar and IndyCar.
My understanding is that they had a string of sponsor deals that went really pear-shaped and they weren't able to financially recover and continue to compete.

Oh the standing starts were so awesome, the DP01 looked so racy. RIP Champcar, you rocked.

the dallara's weren't lame. they were the greatest racing cars ever created.

I may be wrong but by 2007 the 2.65 Cosworth V8s had detuned to 750 hp...nice!
@@billymc2681 Yes. I think (before 2003) they were producing something like 900 - 1000 hp, depending on the boost pressure.

paul newman died, carl haas was getting old and the recession happening RIGHT when the merger came together was the absolute worst case scenario
