Rescuing a very cranky flying-fox: this is Lawrence

- Lawrence is an exceptionally unhappy adult male Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who was found hanging off a car park post in a busy area of town.
He has clearly been on the ground and has mud on him. He's also very cranky because he's in pain and he's knocked himself silly and is quite confused and unfocussed.
In care he was given analgesia which didn't really calm him down and he thrashed around the cage and dinged his face and nose even further, making his nose bleed.
He was given some mild sedation which took the edge of his stress.
He was transferred to another carer who also noted his extreme anxiety and unhappiness.
His condition deteriorated and he died overnight.
RIP Lawrence.
His name? He was found in Darling Harbour (DH).

At least he got some pain relief before he passed. Bless his heart.
All my bats get pain relief till I can get them to a vet and euth them.

@@karla2236 In our group we have access to vets who are of the opinion that analgesia is a critical element of emergency care, and who will prescribe good analgesia for these situations. An animal/human can't progress optimally in critical care without decent analgesia; the stress hormones prevent an optimal outcome.
Lawrence wasn't doing well on rescue; I didn't really expect a happy outcome.
I am so lucky I have vets with realistic care standards and who are prepared to support wildlife with the same level of care as domestic pets.

RIP old man... This might sound kind of strange, but I think it is good to show rescues that let viewers see how much a wild creature (which this poor old battie certainly was) will be intent on defending itself by doing the utmost to bite the rescuer, who is seen as a threat. This is the reason why rescuers and wildlife rehabilitators make a point of urging the public *not* to handle animals themselves, but to call for help.
Yes, I put up the bad as well as the good.
And you can see how aggressive he was - but he was unusually aggressive.
It is also way better to let people who have been trained to handle wild animals as they can react to things the untrained people can't.
Then there is also the whole law point, where if they hurt people, they get euthanized, no matter how young they are.

Poor little guy! Must have been in a lot of pain to be so cranky. He did not want to be handled at all and not eating very well either. How sad he died. Rest in Peace Lawrence, you poor fella! At least you got some love and died in a clean bed with your belly full. Thank you Mega for being so kind to this guy despite his awful crankiness.

I think his brain was swelling and it was trying to force its way down the hole at the bottom of the skull. It's called coning.

OH, so sad, but I am glad that you show us all aspects of bat rescue. Even while I watched the vid I alternated between laughing at his aggressive rejection of help and having tears in my eyes at the sight of such a small being defending himself bravely even as he was in need. Poor little gentleman. It was better than dying helpless at the "mercies" of a dog or bird or thirst. RIP.

Watching that while it flails is so terrible.Sometimes a Kitty cat will get it over with,or caused it to begin with.

I know you don't like to euthanize them. I don't think anyone would. I can't help but be happy that he isn't in pain anymore and won't ever be. The poor thing must have been real bad off to be that loud.

Poor, poor Lawrence! Who knows what trauma and pain he was in. So very sad he died, especially as such a feisty bat so full of life and combative. Thank you for your patience MB, and your compassionate care. He died safe and cared for.
I think he was bleeding into his brain. He certainly deteriorated rapidly and his pupils blew (became enlarged and fixed, not reacting).

The cranky ones have a special appeal to me - I love the defiance then the recognition of the situation then the surrender to pragmatism and giving me the benefit of the doubt.

Well you saw that I moved him and stopped doing the sc injection, because otherwise he was going to have a piece of my leg.
It was too stressful for him and for me to deal with it, so I put him back in the carrier to de stress.

I find it interesting the number of folks that mentioned how their pets reacted to his cries. My dog watches bat videos with me and she was clearly distressed by this one.

I was a little stressed by his condition.
He was very aggro and needed to be sedated a little so he stopped bashing himself against the bars.
Poor little guy. I am so sad for all involved. But how kind of all of you to take the time to care for him. RIP little guy

Oh no...it's so upsetting to hear their distress calls ...poor little thing. Of course they are terrified, sadly sometimes they just hurt themselves even more trying to save themselves.

I tell them to get over it or just deal with it, because I'm not going away and I will do it with or without their cooperation. I actually had to sedate him at one stage because he was flinging himself around in the cage and bashing himself up further.

1.DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME u less you are trained and vaccinated and

I commend you for your amazing patience dedication and compassion. I have rescued many many cats in my life and have lost quite a few over the years they are always frustrating and painful it never gets easier. For myself when a rescue goes well and you set them free healthy it makes up for a bit of that pain it’s hard to learn the lesson you can’t save them all take care of yourself and thank you for your human compassion.
My wife and I have found your channel and fell in love the those furry little critters and just wanted to say that what you are doing is wonderful. It's great to see you let everyone in to this amazing world that has become your life.

@@gobbledygoook Old comment, I know, but I would guess that the octopus gene is when a creature that should have only 2 or 4 arms or legs suddenly seems to have as many as an octopus! In other words, by the time you get one arm unhooked or contained, the next one has gotten loose again.

Another laddie gone to the heavens. You made him as comfortable as possible even though he was fighting you the whole way. I'm completely oblivious when it comes to bats, but he seemed to bite everything in sight, maybe the next Mr. Crankyton will do slightly better with having a chew toy of some sorts to take their anger out on?

I think it was a blessing. I'm sorry he had an accident and came into care, and hit his head so badly he had a brain bleed, but since there's nothing I could do about that having already happened, I'm not sorry he died - it was a blessing.

I searched for this video as you recommended it in another YT followers comment - referencing "cranky" batties. Poor Lawrence he must have been overwhelmed with pain and stress. Sometimes passing is the only release. You did a marvellous job wrangling him out of the daft cage and avoiding his swipes.
