Claus, I spent almost 3 years in Alaska in Fairbanks stationed at Ft. Wainwright in C Co. (ABN), 4/9th 172 LIB from Sep.79' to Feb.82'. The weather pattern were different then, with more snow and colder temps in the winter. Summers were in mid 80*s at the hottest. The mosquitos were a bit rough and as big as crows. Drove out down the Alcan in Feb. 82'. Great trip thru Canada, met some really nice people along the way. Was detoured close to White Horse due to a bridge being out. The detour took us quite a number of miles around and ended up about a 1/4 mile on the other side from where we were diverted to begin with. I found out that night if you ordered a shot of whiskey it came on the rocks. Never heard of that before.

Braveheart at the beginning of the movie when William asks Murron's dad if he can court her. As an American, my biggest complaint is that half of the population hates the other half and vice versa as the media pushes as hard as they can to promote division. Doesn't matter what side you're on, this hate for our fellow citizens hurts the country.

    • @stephengraham1153

"this hate for our fellow citizens hurts the country" It's the way politicians work. They must have a bogey man to attract supporters. In the UK it was anything to do with Europe, then it was all immigrants, people with left wing views, sandal wearing tofu-eaters, cyclists and basically anyone who complained about the previous government's appalling incompetence (to name but a few).

that long twilight is called "gloaming". I used to work up in Alaska and it was cool watching the sun drop down and barely graze the horizon before climbing back high into the sky during the summer. By the way, some Alaskan coastal towns/cities are talking about limiting tourism because they feel they are being overrun, mostly by the cruise ship passengers. Not sure if anyone noticed in the first game at 4.04 the player shot at an enemy tank through the supply dump in the cap and missed. Years ago newbies were told to always flatten the supply dump on your own base, at the commencement of a battle, and never disturb the enemy supply dump if they had not flattened it. The reason for this is the supply dump is a "saving throw" shown in this video. You cannot shoot through the supply dump. I'll give you an example, I was in the cap with my Hetzer. I was approached by an enemy tank, we were both one shots. I hid behind the supply dump. He shot at me but only demolished the supply dump with the shot. I shot him back as there was no supply dump, destroyed him and won the game. So the supply dump in the cap can, at times, be important!

Hey Claus - We also have snowbirds in the metro New York City area. We live in a 55+ community, and I'd guess somewhere between a quarter and a third of the folks here spend some extended time down in Florida during our winter months. I'm really glad to hear you enjoy visiting us down here in the USA, and while Hawaii is a great destination, if you have a craving for the US north-east (NYC/Boston) area I'm sure we and other Clausians in the vicinity, would love to set up a meet&greet! Yeah, AR has been hugely oversold to the public. It has made significant improvements in the last few years, but it is still primarily a task-specific tool, i.e., an AI program must be trained to excel at one thing, like playing Chess or Go or analyzing medical X-rays. Outside that particular task, it's a brick. The real breakthrough will be if we ever manage to create an AGI - artificial GENERAL intelligence that will be very much like human thought and able to adapt on its own to new tasks as the necessity arises.
While I haven't been a world traveler myself, I have interacted with many different people around the world for personal and business reasons. And despite the extraordinarily small differences in culture and physicality that do exist, I firmly believe there's no MEANINGFUL difference between any individual humans. We all have pretty much the same palette of greatness and idiocy.

If you can make it out to Girdwood then try Double Muskie but only get the pepper steak. September isn’t the warmest for us but it’s not bad at all. You can take a day trip out and ride some 4 wheelers or sxs’s out to knik glacier. Our three year old handles the ride so it’s not that bad. A.I. stands for Artificial Incompetence.
At my local supermarket you can self scan as you go around the shop. You tell them at the start who you are and get a scanning gun. I do it as it means I can pack at my leisure, and no Olympic speed packing at the checkouts where the eggs and tomatoes are at the bottom, squashed under the tins.
So they know who I am, and that I have been checked a number of times and every time all was correct. Yet still the computer decides my shopping needs to be checked. I am checked just as often as the people who had tried to hide a bottle of spirits or high value stuff and been caught. Surely someone with half a brain would say "I know, those people that have been caught out, check them more often. And the people that are honest, we don't need to check them as often." But no, that would be too easy. Hence Artificial Incompetence.

Canada has 40 million people and look who leads you. I'd take either of the major party US candidates over him.

Claus Scotland could have been one of the richest nations yet we been robbed day and night from politicians and their puppet masters. I met with the Tribal leader of Canada and Alaska and the guy from Alska was from Fairbanks and it was just like the North East of Scotland just they had colder weather. As we had same industries and same drug problems in society. It felt like a small world...

People will side with their own interests up to about five feet ahead of themselves (sometimes not even that far) ... after that they don't give a damn. That's why we need leaders that can look at the entire picture. Yeh, the computer is truly rude when i am in the middle of something. AI will change all that. But it is not intuitive ... that will never exist.
