Claus, I spent almost 3 years in Alaska in Fairbanks stationed at Ft. Wainwright in C Co. (ABN), 4/9th 172 LIB from Sep.79' to Feb.82'. The weather pattern were different then, with more snow and colder temps in the winter. Summers were in mid 80*s at the hottest. The mosquitos were a bit rough and as big as crows. Drove out down the Alcan in Feb. 82'. Great trip thru Canada, met some really nice people along the way. Was detoured close to White Horse due to a bridge being out. The detour took us quite a number of miles around and ended up about a 1/4 mile on the other side from where we were diverted to begin with. I found out that night if you ordered a shot of whiskey it came on the rocks. Never heard of that before.

I was approached by an enemy tank, we were both one shots. I hid behind the supply dump. He shot at me but only demolished the supply dump with the shot. I shot him back as there was no supply dump, destroyed him and won the game. So the supply dump in the cap can, at times, be important!

If you make it to Anchorage for a few days a good place to eat is called mooses tooth pizza or you can go to the second run theater called bears tooth and get the same pizza and watch a movie. If you can make it out to Girdwood then try Double Muskie but only get the pepper steak. September isn’t the warmest for us but it’s not bad at all. You can take a day trip out and ride some 4 wheelers or sxs’s out to knik glacier. Our three year old handles the ride so it’s not that bad. When you go to Hawaii and you’re staying on Oahu then go to the Polynesian cultural center in the north shore and do the full tourist trap and do their luau
