These are my favorite ink test videos. I don’t understand the people who swab large blocks of ink with a Q-tip. That never helped me. I especially love how you can flip the page and show many comparisons. Thank you.
Diamine Red Dragon is my go to red. As you say, similar to Oxblood but more red than rust. Just a bit brighter. It plays nicely and is quite manageable. No warts. Of course there are many reds serving different purposes…but if you want RED then Red Dragon is your beast. Well priced and widely available too.
I love it - but I'm also infatuated with Pelikan's Edelstein Star Ruby, which is gorgeous. It's in one of my Viscontis right now, because I'm editing a book.
These ink comparison videos are interesting and useful. I only use Diamine inks and I have Red Dragon in my white Parker Duofold; it is indeed a beautiful colour. As always, thank you for the videos.
This is my second visit to this video. I find that the more I experience Diamine inks, the more I like them for the very reason you articulate at the end - the variety of color tones, hues, shades, they produce for a simple idea, be it red, blue, green, is amazing.
The Red Dragon came out tops for me out of this lot. Fascinating seeing all these together & I agree that Diamine's range of colours is quite a feat. Thoroughly enjoying seeing these comparisons & have learnt to appreciate shading & outlining through watching...............
Well, I have to admit, I feel the same. I've loved Oxblood for ages, but the added red tinge to Red Dragon made that stand out for me - ideal for editing or just normal writing, I reckon. A really lovely ink.
@@writerlywitterings will it come out properly with a Lammy fine nib ? I'm looking for a complementary ink to match my pilot blue black ink when I prepare my notes and I prefer a fine nib so I wonder if it'll come out properly on my cheap 80gsm paper.
Cheers, Paul - and mine too, I think. A really good, deep red which I can use to write with as well as edit. I'm very impressed with it! As to the D/D - well, she insisted on trying Amber because that's the name of one of her friends at University, and I think she felt the colour matched the girl! Likes it lots.
I realize that I am quite late to the party but I have to say that I love this format, to be able to see all of the colours next to each other is brilliant! Also I'd like to suggest you might want to try monteverde's ruby, which in my opinion is the most beautiful, and also a true "I can see form 3 meters away that the teacher was not happy with my essay"- red. I love catching up with your ink reviews and look forward to the next one :)
Another great ink series, very helpful as always, please keep them coming. I was waiting specifically for this red series because up until now I've used only one red ink (Pelikan Brilliant Red) and wanted something darker too, but Oxblood is a bit to dark. You've sold another bottle of Red Dragon to me, placing my order today. When you get to the greens I hope you have some Diamine Sherwood Green to demo, I love that ink for the subtle shimmer/outlining and would bet many of your viewers would appreciate your take on it.
Nice comparison. I was eyeing oxblood for a while as a everyday red but it looked too dark and brown ish. I went for red dragon instead and never looked back. A nice straight dark red. Not too vibrant and poppy so it's pretty good for everyday use.
I couldn't agree more, Den. I'd also advise that you take a quick look at Syrah, too, which I adore. The nice thing is, you can get the mini-bottles from people like Cult Pens, if you want to try out different colours. I like Oxblood, but can't use it everyday.
Yes, it's a really good colour, isn't it? I also love Syrah, which is a lovely colour - a little more restrained than Dragon - well worth a 30ml bottle!
Reviewed your review on the weekend and plummed for Wild Strawberry (though the poppy does look interesting), which arrived yesterday. The name accurately represents the colour (though perhaps the occasional 'seed yellow' or over-ripe red should show appear amongst the fruit?). It seems very useful for putting A's and *s next to my actions and would be a joy for sub-editing. Will try some other reds down the line - maybe something darker...
Ruby is great, a good 'red' red.. Monaco is a nice dark red but that Red Dragon looks interesting. Wild Strawberry is a bit too light but it does have copious gold sheen.
Totally agree - although my own editing ink for some years has been Passion Red (Diamine as well) and that works really well for me. Bright, full-coloured, and perfect in all my pens.

What moves you to choose a color? Do you like different colors for different reasons or different people? Different types of writing? I chose a color for letters to my son because I knew he would appreciate it. Just wondering about the process that goes in to the choice.
For me it really is my mood. Sometimes I just want a good, dark red like Diamine's Syrah or Writer's Blood; other times I want a light greenish brown like the Rohrer und Klingner Alt Gold-Grün, and sometimes a blue like Akkerman's Delft's Blauw or their Israel's Zeeblauw ... it really is a matter of the frame of mind at that time!

@@stevenweiss7129 A very simple decision - in theory! Then you start to realise how many different inks there are (Diamine are up to some 140 colours and shades, I think), and then you get pulled into the rabbit hole of what type of nib ... It's never-ending!

The notebooks I have (rhodiarma and leichturm) use 5 mm and my writing looks too close on each line but too spaced out on every other. Yours looks “just right” - Any B5, uk available, notebooks you’d recommend ? Cheers
That's good to hear - I'm glad the reviews are helping people - and I can't fault Red Dragon as a choice! This cahier is a Goulet Pens Tomoe River, and the dots are exactly 5mm apart, I'm afraid! I just measured to check. All I can suggest is, that I write bigger!
It's getting even worse. I've just had to invest in a bottle of Writer's Blood, which hopefully will be with me in a week or so (it's brand new, so I've a pre-release order). Inks are getting expensive, but I couldn't refuse an ink with a name like that!

Great video. I highly recommend ancient copper on Leuchtturm1917 it's red with great shading on tomoe it's very similar to a *slightly* dull penny also with great shading. And does a good job of not bleeding or ghosting. Truly an amazing ink. (Not sure if you've already gotten some I'm just starting into your video library) Be well, thanks.

Hi, Robert - I have just spent a happy period looking through my charts and trying to work out if any of the damn things are actually water safe! The interesting thing is, what do you mean by "Blood Red"? For example you can range from a more blood clot colour (Diamine Oxblood) to a drying blood colour (Diamine Monaco Red) but neither is at all water resistant. I've just smudged both - and several other Diamines. If you are happy with a more "clotted" colour, I would strongly recommend Rohrer und Klingner's Eisen Gallus Tinte "Scabiosa". Eisen Gallus means it's oak gall ink, and that is about as bullet proof as you can get with a pen ink. I've used it a lot, and it's a wonderful ink, but it's definitely darker, clotted ink. Slightly more red, but not a bloody crimson, is R&K's Alt-Bordeaux, which is one that surprised me. I have dampened that a fair bit, and it is very robust with no smearing at all, so that could be a good alternative. I should just say that Rohrer und Klingner are one of my favourite brands generally - like Diamine, they offer exceptional value for money. The only other brand I would be inclined to look at would be Noodler's. Now, I cannot vouch for any of the inks from there, but I do know that they are supposed to be very water resistant. I don't have a sample of any of their reds, but their "Bulletproof" range should be perfectly stable with water. One that looks like it might suit you is their "Empire Red". Here's a comparison: nickstewart.ink/2016/02/26/noodlers-ink-review-reds/ One or two words - I have used Noodler's a few times, and my only cautions are: always, always shake the bottle before filling a pen. Noodler's inks settle and separate over time. If you look up my videos on their Blue Black, you'll see what I mean. Second, be aware that Noodlers is powerful stuff. If you use it in a transparent pen, it will almost certainly get stained the colour of your ink. It is impossible to clean, say, a cheaper TWSBI if you get it stained with a Baystate Blue, for example. Having said that, Hope that is some help.
@ Wow! Thank You so much for your ornate response, I really appreciate it! The colors I am striving for when I envision “Blood Red” would be akin to Diamine “Writers Blood” or Diamine “Oxblood”. Unfortunately both of these colors are notorious for their poor water resistance, and most likely not prime candidates for Journal entries. Which other Colors are closer to blood red inks? Most of the Noodlers I have seen online are usually leaning towards Red/Black to imbue some permanence to the ink. All of these ink’s will be filled in a TWSBI Eco with a Medium Nib. Writers Blood is such a beautiful color, a mixture of Bordeaux Red, brown, and hints of green shimmer. I would even settle for an ink which leaned heavily towards dark Bordeaux or Burgundy Red which would have better water resistance. The “Alt-Bordeaux” is a very interesting color, which looks more purplish when viewed online, and I wish it had more dark red hues and I will definitely order a sample of this. The “Empire Red” is a strong contender and close to Writers Blood with a little more brightness, when viewed online. My daily driver inks which I use everyday for Journaling are Noodlers Black and Liberty’s Elysium. Liberty’s Elysium is a fantastic Blue ink which I have dedicated to a TWSBI Eco since it has strong permanence, similar to Baystate Blue. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated
@@RobertLaTuso Thanks for that (we're clearly playing a mixture of telephone tag based on timezones! That is really interesting. I have been using Writer's Blood for a while (and Oxblood, of course). Alt-Bordeaux works well for me. It is not fully water-safe, but it's a little more red than Writer's Blood - looking again today in daylight, it has a slightly pinker tone to it. Scabiosa is entirely water-resistant, and, again, looking at it in good weather, it is about the nearest ink I've seen to Writer's Blood. If anything, I would say it has a slightly more "plum" type of dark berry colour to it, compared with WB. So it would, for you (I think) be the better option. I have to admit, my favourite just now is Akkerman's Delft's Blauw for everyday writing. A soft pastel blue rather like the Quink ink I used to use at school. If pressed, I'd probably be happy to have to use Diamine's Blue Black or Prussian Blue for life - both pleasantly understated inks, good for general use, good for business, and both having excellent shading. And both bloody useless if they get wet! Best wishes
Really enjoying what you're doing here. Its difficult to get a comparison of ink colours all at once on fountain friendly paper. I dont have Red Dragon but I will get a bottle now. I must ask though, what journal are you using? As you say, you get wonderful shading and use both sides of the page, with no feathering or bleed through, and the pen seems to be laying down a nice flow of ink. Impressive journal. Hi, Nick, and thanks for the comment. The journal is from the Goulet Pen Company, and it's a soft covered cahier-style book using Tomoe River (I think) 62gsm paper. Absolutely lovely paper and notebook - I can highly recommend it!

Beautiful colored inks. I also like the Red Dragon and OxBlood ones. I could combine the Amber first and then Red Dragon on top for great effect.

Red Dragon is a red I enjoy using for letter writing. I can't say this about many red inks.

I've been an Oxblood fan for ages but maybe I need to ink up the Red Dragon that has been languishing in my ink drawer.

I have to admit, my favourite just now is Akkerman's Delft's Blauw for everyday writing. A soft pastel blue rather like the Quink ink I used to use at school. If pressed, I'd probably be happy to have to use Diamine's Blue Black or Prussian Blue for life - both pleasantly understated inks, good for general use, good for business, and both having excellent shading.
And both bloody useless if they get wet!

Really enjoying what you're doing here. Its difficult to get a comparison of ink colours all at once on fountain friendly paper. I dont have Red Dragon but I will get a bottle now. I must ask though, what journal are you using? As you say, you get wonderful shading and use both sides of the page, with no feathering or bleed through, and the pen seems to be laying down a nice flow of ink. Impressive journal. Hi, Nick, and thanks for the comment. The journal is from the Goulet Pen Company, and it's a soft covered cahier-style book using Tomoe River (I think) 62gsm paper. Absolutely lovely paper and notebook - I can highly recommend it!
