- Jajce is a town located in central Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the Central Bosnia Canton. It lies at the crossroads of roads between Banja Luka and Mrkonjić Grad, as well as Donji Vakuf, where the Pliva and Vrbas rivers converge. Just a few kilometres from the town, there are the Large and Small Pliva Lakes, on which the medieval mills, known as "Mlinčići" by the locals, stand as special historical landmarks. Nineteen wooden water mills, covered with shingles and built from old oak wood, were constructed for the purpose of grain milling. They are without attics, windows, or chimneys.
Historians speculate that originally, there were 33 of these mills, with their construction dating back to the Middle Ages. The first written mention of the mills dates back to the year 1562. From old records, it can be inferred that during the time of the Ottoman Empire, there were 24 mills built on the waterfalls, out of which 6 were not operational. In the 17th century, according to some records, there were as many as 26 operational mills on the Pliva Lake, where the local residents brought their grains for milling.
