  • We visit the historic Black Rock Tunnel in Phoenixville, Pa. This is said to be the third oldest rail tunnel in the United States. It is notable because the train makes a dramatic transition to a bridge over the Schuylkill River as it leaves the tunnel.

    When I was around 14 years old (1964) I walked the tunnel a few times with some friends. Two of those walks a train came through. The trains were commuter trains that ran often throughout the day. The walls of the tunnel were not smooth and had depressions in them and we would stand with our backs against the wall while the train came through. We were kids and didn't care about the danger. Walking the tunnel was a challenge of courage.
    Thanks for bringing back a memory I had completely forgotten.

    In opening moments, this video you see St. Mary's Black Rock Cemetery in my long-time hometown, Phoenixville, Penna. That's cemetery where remains, my oldest sibling, late John D. Hagee, Jr. are interred (he was found dead at his residency in Phoenixville, Penna. Westridge Estates complex where he'd been residing since Dec., 2008). And that's same cemetery where my remains will be interred once l'm d'csd/my gravesite will be adjacent to that, my late oldest s'blng's

    I used to walk this as a child and friends. We would jump off that bridge into that dark stank water to impress girls. I haven't lived there in 20 years. I gave lots of photos of that river and times wasted there.

    Great close up look! I reside only a few miles away. Norfolk Southern is the only one serving this line. No CSX, BNSF or even Amtrak. I always want to see an actual train cab ride from Norristown, through this tunnel and through my town Royersford out to Pottstown and Reading by Norfolk Southern. That tunnel would be like around mile post 28 and here historical Royersford Station is 31.6 miles out from Philadelphia. Schuylkill River Trail is about mile marker 32 across the river from the Royersford station. So picture it like almost same length from Philadelphia for both the trail and train track mileage. Both run parallel along the Schuylkill River all the way.

    If anyone is wondering a train comes about three times a day, once two came within five minutes of each other. They normally come around 4-5 pm and 10 pm

    Under ConRail they operated 30 trains a day in both directions starting in the late 1970's. They shifted as much Harrisburg traffic ( to and from ) to this line and away from the more direct ex- Pennsylvania Railroad. ex-ex Penn Central Philadelphia main line through Paoli and Downingtown. So much freight traffic was shifted to these ex-Reading Company rails that ConRail abandoned the low grade grade line to Harrisburg and Enola Yard. They changed operations since ConRail. Train movements are under PSR Railroading today. Precision Schedule Railroading. That's where they combine 2 or 3 trains together and move it as one. Train lengths are now 2 or 3 miles long if not longer. Management loves it, unions hate it because it means fewer union jobs. Longer trains are also prone to break in two's from separated air hoses and broken knuckles from excessive slack running in. Railroad management could care less about safe operations. They just want maximum profits. Hence fewer, but much longer trains.

    you should do another video at this location but follow the track as it heads over the river. i've walked that track and about a half mile down there's a trestle that crosses the river

      Where’s the second trestle at? Is it going towards the tunnel or the opposite way?

    • @BRIANDER100
      @BRIANDER100 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@weaverdamien00000000 it's going the opposite way. if you go about a half mile down the tracks towards royersford there is a track that veers left and is the trestle that goes over the river near the cromby power plant

      @@BRIANDER100 That sounds pretty cool, thanks. I can’t find any pictures of it online though. Can you get into the Cromby Plant? Is this the trestle?

    Thanx for the video. As a railfan, you can find out who owns the line, ie; CSX, NS, or whoever and possibly go online or make a call MAYBE and get a schedule. Not sure if they'll do that anymore during the times we're in. Good luck with it nonetheless.~

      Only Norfolk Southern on this line. Nothing else. I wish Septa extended from Norristown through at least Pottstown if not Reading. Allowing passenger service along heavy traffic and constructed 422 corridor for those traveling to Philadelphia. Even forced to hit heavy jammed I76 after 422. I don't drive but would be convenient for me when I do trips on public transportation service than just Septa 139 bus.
