The OP was key animated by Masami Oobari, as are all the Transformation and Combination sequences. They all look great indeed, but the rest of the show really doesn't hold up to this standard. Animation gets a lot wonkier once it isn't stock footage, and Sunrise had produced much higher quality shows in the 80s, one just needs to look at Zeta Gundam or Panzer World Galient for examples. The early Brave Series seem to have been low priority to the studio at the time and didn't really have any of their star staff members working on it (save for Kunio Ookawara, but he worked on everything), so this is understandable.
So I'm currently watching the Brave series, and I'm also a fan of Transformers, but what I want to know is if there are any other shows where the robots are sentient instead of being machines piloted by humans? I'd appreciated the recommendations :)
its bit different but similar a series called gridman is worth checking out if havnt seen it yet. bit hard to suggest since this genre of anime only lasted from mid 80s to late 90s with the last major one being king of the braves gaogaigar. the only other 2 i can think of is suisei no gargantia and to an extent the zoids franchise.
I might have found Exkaiser as a show to be pretty boring (being the first entry in the Brave Saga is no excuse. The guys who made the Brave saga also made Transformers and the first Transformers was awesome) but I do like this opening!
@@KingCasual1986 That's because it's different writers on said shows. If I'm not mistaken Tomino worked on Voltes V and Daimos and Gundam. He didn't work on the Brave Series.

agree though I'd put an extra emphasis on "early Brave shows" because as early as from Da-Garn onwards the shows looked all well-animated iirc
@@rrrrr0_ Da Garn looks great, and GaoGaiGar… well, it’s just plain, obscenely, ridiculously well animated, impressive considering it’s extended run
This was made in 1990 when Japan's "bubble" economy didn't exactly pop yet.
Though the entire Brave series is still well animated anyway.

There's also the later iterations of Mazinger and Getter, where the titular mechs are semi-sentient, some sort of unknowable deities.

Well No , G1 was made by Toei , Brave was made by Sunrise . Takara only made the toys
@@Truenofan86 Sunrise made Voltes V and Daimos which had great stories for Super Robot anime and came out in the 70s. And they made Gundam. No excuse.
