Volvo has been stepping up its game, especially the interior treatments. At first when I heard that Geely had bought them I was worried for their future, but I see that I was WRONG,Again. They are making some market leading products recently, good to see.Thank you for your videos.
I've had my xc40 for a month now. Rides beautifully. Solid feel. Very comfortable seats. Sensus interface is easy once you find all the features, some of which I didn't know the car had. Only averaging 24 mpg although mostly around town driving so far. Have taken it on the beach in off-road mode. While ground clearance is fantastic for this, the car is not inspiring me with full confidence in the soft sand, so will investigate different tire treads, plus have Treds Traction boards stowed just in case.
The Volvo XC40 is not a crossover. It got classic SUV proportions and high ground clearence (you said it yourself). For example the BMW X2 is a crossover. Part from that a great review as always.
I have to say that Sensus is actually pretty easy to use if you spend an hour or so learning how it works. I do have to agree that the trip computer makes absolutely no sense at all and resetting it is confusing. I’m pretty sure on the left stalk on the steering wheel there is a ‘reset’ but you can push in to reset the trip computer.
Volvo's constantly improving it with the updates, but maybe this is why I find it confusing. I drive 2-3 Volvos a year, and every time there's something new in Sensus. I drive BMWs more often, and their infotainment seems to be more consistent. I know there is a reset button on the stalk, but I'm never sure whether it resets all data, or whatever is displayed at the moment :)
Interesting if idiosyncratic review. Some comments seem a bit hit and miss, eg visibility - everyone has to agree that rear three-quarter visibility is poor, but other reviewers comment on good vision around the A pillars. And is it not possible to adjust the steering feel in the 'individual' drive mode (genuine question). Etc
Individual mode lets you configure steering force (i.e. heavier/lighter), but does not affect steering geometry. If the wheel doesn't return to its center position fast enough, there's nothing you can do, but slow down. And as I said, this is not a car for those, who like a sporty ride, and that's fine. As far as front visibility is concerned, I don't know what these other reviewers compared this car against. Compared to a Ford F150 I bet XC40 has great visibility, but the entire current Volvo range is notorious for huge mirrors, which really obstruct visibility. V60 review is coming in a few weeks. The same problem there too.
I usually don't do the same cars with different engines. Maybe after the facelift. And Audi doesn't talk to me, so it's highly unlikely I'll be reviewing any of their cars soon :)
I think V60 Cross Country will be the best Volvo to have for the most. It has the handling of a normal car but with a higher clearance and better view.
Don’t like the looks of it but that doesn’t mean that I don’t appreciate it. What really bothers me is what the heck is 2.0 litre engine do inside a small crossover. 247 hp is absolutely too much. And the price is really steep.
Hi Marek, great review again. I am looking for the best fun to drive SUV/Cross over (I have a 2005 MX5 and I intend to keep it) and I am thinking Audi Q2 2.0 quattro TDI, Volvo XC40 and X2 1.8 140hp. What do you think? My wife does not appreciate Mini's :)
Q2 is basically an expensive T-Roc, so you can get more for your money getting a VW. X2 is low on tech, and not very comfortable on long journeys. I think XC40 is the best blend of comfort, tech and driving dynamics.
Hi Marek, I do like your down to hearth reviews. Would you please also include in your reviews the soundproofing of each car in the city and on the highway? I do not remember you mentioning how sound comfortable is one car against the other. Thanks in advance
They are all similar in this respect. Jaguar engine may have sounded a bit louder upon acceleration, but that was due to the gearbox. X2 was slightly quieter, because it was a diesel, so it worked on lower revs. Overall on the motorway they are average. If you want quiet, BMW 6 GT is pretty good.
Keyhan Hadjari XC40 is now Volvo’s best selling car at launch. They announced that in UK they expected to sell 1,000 a month and are currently selling 2,000 a month. Which is why I believe they cancelled a couple of hundred orders that were due to go to Australia. 😐
I really like this car a lot and it´s on my shortlist for next car change, together with the Q2. Which would you choose Marek, between a Q2 and an XC40 with similar specs? I also like the Q3 but I´m waiting to know more about the upgraded version, do you know when it is coming?
I was in the same boat. Looking at the Q2, T-Roc, Mini Countryman and the XC40. I placed an order for the XC40 yesterday. The quality of everything in the VW felt cheap, the Mini I tested had a fault with the collision warning system, there was no 30mph on the speedometer which made it difficult to judge speeds at a glance, the sound system was terrible even compared to my stock 2007 Ford Focus stereo (no depth, no mid range, no bass in the Mini), the Audi was too small and the interior while minimalistic and high quality just felt basic so I went for the XC40. It's a long wait for one, I won't get it until October but I'm not fussed I know I made the right choice.
So, my requirements were a heated windscreen, excellent stereo, full opening panoramic roof and comfort because I have back problems so that limits my choices. Not sure what old woman wants a XC40 R-Design with 21" wheels and a harman/kardon sound system.
Billy Johnson so you're suggesting that you're the one who bought this car with 21" wheels? Not really a wise choice for someone with back problems. There are plenty of women out there who would buy cars with big wheels only to complain later about the bone jarring ride. Bling factor attracts 'em!

58k EUR for a small, medium quality crossover.. the world has gone crazy.
I really feel Volvo can shine here vs the competition as all the competition is fwd based and offer a max displacement of 2L.
Does anyone know what the soundtrack is playing is?
I like the review.. I'm gonna get one but think I'll stay well clear of the orange interior.
It's stock music. No clue what it is.
Haha! "a womans purse is full of crap" Not OK in Sweden ;) I love your reviews. Keep up the good work.
Wouldnt be OK in Denmark either.....but oh so true.... 😉👍
Best review of this car!!
Lol then you haven't seen many!

It's a thin line, but your definition sounds reasonable.
Thanks for your report.
cant decide between this and the mercedes a class 2018. any help?
Great review. Thank you.
Excellent review
What's up with those Christmas lights at the rear?

thank you Marek!
Marek are you going to drive xc40 t3? Between base trim of xc40 t3 and audi q3 1.5lt which do you believe is more car for its money?
I usually don't do the same cars with different engines. Maybe after the facelift.
And Audi doesn't talk to me, so it's highly unlikely I'll be reviewing any of their cars soon :)
I like XC40, I dont like price tag
Nice.... But i think that for such money you can buy new v60 when it comes... Marek i hope that you will get one... and have another fine review...
If everything goes well it's coming June/July.
I think V60 Cross Country will be the best Volvo to have for the most. It has the handling of a normal car but with a higher clearance and better view.
tomislav dvorski yes I agree..I waiting S60 :)
Gonna cost more than XC40. By a lot! (CC variant)
Love the review and the car, but I think you missed the Q2
Q2 is smaller.
Marek Drives it’s between the xc40 and the q3 but no matter the video was excellent and I enjoyed it very much. :)
what's the sunglasses for.
Sun.
Nice work marek as always!can you tell me what you think of the Renault kadjar?

There is a 1.5 3-cylinder option.
Marek Drives come on you can’t let me rant just a little? 😇
I have seen it from close. It is not that small.

Great review, as usual. But 58.000 euros for a "subcompact Suv"?Damn....
Hi Marek,

If there is something to say, I say it. This was average.

Why would anyone want the R design?
It looks alright.
Why wouldn't you?
I don't see the point of crossovers or suvs, most of the time. You'd be better off buying a sedan or a Kombi (I.e. Get more for your money 🙄).
Short answer: Ladies
Let's see, Volvo's highest selling model since many years is xc60, so you are pretty wrong about which model sells best.
Keyhan Hadjari XC40 is now Volvo’s best selling car at launch. They announced that in UK they expected to sell 1,000 a month and are currently selling 2,000 a month. Which is why I believe they cancelled a couple of hundred orders that were due to go to Australia. 😐
Weird C-pillar

Q2 is a posher T-Roc. It's smaller than XC40. Volvo wins hands down here.
The Q3 will be introduced later this year.
I was in the same boat. Looking at the Q2, T-Roc, Mini Countryman and the XC40.

It's a nice crossover, but a bit overpriced...
baaa, all these compact cross shiturbanvehicles, stylish tractors for the army of rich pensioners!
Well put!
I've just placed an order for one yesterday, am I 24 going into early retirement? 😂
Billy Johnson these things are for ladies and old people you know
So, my requirements were a heated windscreen, excellent stereo, full opening panoramic roof and comfort because I have back problems so that limits my choices.

A cheaply made car sold for premium price.
Patrick Van Reusel You probably bought a Dacia!
Luis Ortiz Garcia No, and even if I would drive a bicycle I'm still entitled to have an opinion.
I think you spend more time trying to be funny than reviewing the car.
Both of which are not funny.!!
Great car, very unlikable reviewer.
