Nice dude! What did you end up keeping in there? I have a hfs/vb combo laying around and am wondering if to put them in my prs se also? It has the 85/15s pickups which seem just a tad weak
I left the 85/15 in this guitar and later replaced the bridge pickup with a Seymour Duncan Omega. The video is on the channel. I put HFS and VB in another guitar for low tuning. I’ll say on my own that the 85/15 are very versatile pickups, the HFS feels only a little hotter, the difference is small
@@_sergeiminaev_ thanks dude! Yeah the more I play with the 85/15s the more I really like them! I’ll probably put the HFS/VB in another guitar I have then!
Thanks for doing this comparison. I recently bought a used 2016 SE with the older HFS p'ups and was wondering if I'd missed anything "spectacular" from the 85/15 S. They seem pretty close to my ears, but I find the older model to be a bit fuller.
thanks for the comment, I prefer pickups 85/15 because of their readability and more dense sound. on TH-cam in the video is not audible, but the living difference is palpable. Sorry for my english translation using google translator
You do realise that playing through SW plugins smears any audible differences between pickups swaped? I've done this mistake a million times changing a pickup at home listening through my PC each time thinking i'm hearing minimal changes - then at band practice with full live tube amp, the difference was night and day.
I understand this, but I have no other way to demonstrate in the video. I heard the difference well live, even without a tube amplifier, I use boss katana. this amplifier shows the difference very well, all my guitars are different in sound when playing through the boss

I wouldn't go as far as to say it's 80% but it is more or less the one thing you cannot change about any guitar except matching necks and bodies on bolt on models. On the nitro models it gets drier with time and starts to respond a bit different, on the models where not very dry wood was used in combination with a fully sealing finish, age and lots of play won't make any improvement in terms of sound and response (a lot of what's coming out of indonesia regardless of brand is like that). As his rule, PRS mentioned that a good guitar has to: A) Sustain all notes for as long as possible B) Sound snappy in the lower registers / strings and warm/sweet on the thin strings / high register. So I guess any such guitar, be it SE, S2, Core or just about any manufacture in the world that respects those two criteria, is in fact a pretty good base guitar. That said, I've also a plain Gibson SG standard that even acoustically sustains well and rings out pretty much the way PRS described it's desirable. It's tremendously nice plugged in as well and sounds good on just about any amp and setup, so I guess there's at least some truth to it.
I like better the 85/15 pickups, but the amp sounds really good! I prefer a good amp more than expensive pickups.
I like the HFS better. Just a warmer sound
