  • To buy laminating foil, I think your best bet is to use this link to find merchants that will ship worldwide: www.ebay.com/s...
    the clear sheet is: www.amazon.com...
    I'd like you to understand how this video was made... it wasn't planned at all... I just had had enough with the larger laminator and decided to test the small one. I turned on the video recording on my phone and just went with it. Trust me, I was completely shocked when it came out so perfectly (the foiled print on the small laminator). So please excuse the crude video, i'm not that good at this particular style (me being in one)
    (Update) I have bought another Apache and it is operating as it should, it isn't perfect but neither is the Fellowes. The thing is, you can get the same results whether you use the Apache or the Fellowes.
    The Fellowes feed is very slow, the Apache moves much quicker. The Fellowes can be turned off right after use, the Apache MUST be allowed to cool off or it will burn up the rollers.
    Nothing I have tried is fool proof. If you want perfection... you'll need to spend a lot more money. (13 March 2015)
    (Original Post) I've gone thru 3 or 4 Apache AL 13P's since July 2014 (it is now December 2014) and each one of them either ate the paper (eventually) or found another dastardly way to die. My husband and i worked on the latest dead Apache last night and it does work...sorta... it wants to eat the paper and truly that is not what you want it to do... the smell is awful! So this morning I decided to try out my cheapo $35 Fellows laminator and lo and behold....
    Is it metal? Yes it is! • Is the laminating foil...

      Honestly, i have never tried another colour toner. It couldn't hurt to test the theory... but it must definitely be laser toner. If you try another colour, let me know, I would love to know the result... or better yet...make your own video... wow the world baby! :)

    Hi Virginia, Thank you for posing a cool video. I have been inspired and trying to use the technique for my wedding invitations.I am having some difficulties with the thick paper / thin card (300gsm) I am using and the foil almost refusing to stick to it. In another comment you mention paper types affecting the quality.Do you find its the smoothness or the thickness of the stock which affects this the most?

    • @SeafordShores
      @SeafordShores  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Robert Stewart I've been doing some laminating all day today... the smoother the paper... the better... you can use a more textured paper...but the results certainly do vary. I have used both thick and thin paper... it works on either...comes down to the texture... glossy paper works real well...usually.

    I am trying this for wedding invitations and the paper is actually card stock. Are there any tips to making it work with heavier paper? I am getting very spotty results. I purchased a laminator from Amazon that came broke so I went to Michaels and bought a purple cow that does hot and cold. This does not seem to get hot enough. It was half price and I paid $40 but everything I read says this process isn't supposed to break the bank so I don't want to buy a $100 machine!!! Thank you for your help

      +Shannon Geronimo which laminator arrive broken? I do use the Apache and it does work for thicker paper. for most papers the temperature needs to be very very high... 379 is the highest the apache will go. the hot/cold laminator probably won't do what you need. how many invites are you doing? perhaps contract it out? i know a good one to do that for you... (cough cough)

    Your Apaches 'die' because you must cool them down to prevent the rollers from degrading or getting sticky or flat spots, being parked when hot. Here's a tip, swap the Apache's 'cold' rollers for the hot ones inside the AL13P (their are 2 pairs inside) and get a new lease on life!

    • @SeafordShores
      @SeafordShores  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always cooled it down before turning it off...the problem with the apache is it kept sucking up the item within the rollers... we tighten them, loosen them..., drove me crazy... i can't stand making a print that is littered with little black spots... this demo here was exceptional and surprising. it doesn't always come out so nicely...sometimes have to give a couple of go's before a satisfactory print is accomplished.

    • @ancelb9590
      @ancelb9590 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Perhaps 'pouch' it between sheets of paper to stiffen it a bit....Did u clean your rollers with rubbing alcohol for any buildups?

    Hi, Virginia (: I have the same issue with black so many black spots showing through in my transfers. I am torn between getting the Apache and the Fellowes. Is there any benefit at all to getting the Apache over the Fellowes? Other than the Apache eventually dying, does it produce the same or better results? What do you attribute the perfect transfer to in this video? Do you think the clear sheet on top or the type of paper? Or any other factor? Any tips would greatly help! I LOVE LOVE LOVE your work. Heya! I have an Apache. What temperature should I use it at?

    • @SeafordShores
      @SeafordShores  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kevin Handy Hey Kevin. it will depend on what you are adhering the foil to. for me, it's hit and miss... i always start out at 379 (why wait for the christmas rush?) if it comes back bubbled or really bad... (like on sticker material) i lower the temperature. and it really depends on your machine. you also want to make sure your rollers are tight.. but not too. that takes adjustments a quarter at a time... either to the left or right depending on the setting it currently is.

    Do you have to do the foiling straight after printing when the ink is wet? I don't have a laser printer so I might have to get my project printed somewhere else. So wouldn't be able to do the foiling straight away. Or should I just buy a laser printer if I want to do this?

    • @SeafordShores

      No,, the ink is dry as a bone and can be saved forever and still be foiled. It has to be toner from a laser printer

    • @SeafordShores
      @SeafordShores  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      LizasPaperPassion it is 2835DW ... but I've learned a thing or two since making this video... seems the higher quality cardstock I use... the better the outcome. I've been using Recollections paper from Michaels and another type paper from Create and Craft and I seriously don't have to throw away the print hardly ever... if I do get a bad print it is the result of the foil wrinkling or something.

      +Jason Loc Jason, it is hit and miss... when i did this video (in one take), i did it on a whim. i used regular cardstock and did nothing special other than the overlay. I have done it again exactly as you saw and i had horrific results. what seems to work the best i believe, is very firm cardstock or a semigloss paper. the less porous the better... and be sure to let it warm up at least 10-15 minutes past it's "ready" time.

    It looked like it picked up every part of the print and that there where no black spots. Is that pretty common? I've done this before with another laminator and another gold foil and I always get so many black spots it's frustrating! Yours looked amazing! I'm trying to master the gold foil technique so I can sell them online. I don't want to sell spotty prints. What are your best tips to prevent any black spots? Thank you!

    • @SeafordShores
      @SeafordShores  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it is anything but common and I was very surprised when i did this video. I did it on the fly and as an experiment... so yeah... very surprised. I too am very conscious about the black spots... one maybe two if not too big is okay but that is hard to get. My best advice is to use what I am using which is: www.amazon.com/New-HP-Q1987A-Brochure-Brightness-HEWQ1987A/dp/B005D8H7U0/ref=sr_1_5?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1423807690&sr=1-5&keywords=hp+brochure+paper
      I have on occasion managed a really good print with regular cardstock but it is hard to get it. I work between this Fellowes laminator and the apache... when i figure out a perfect solution, you can bet I'll make another video but in the meantime... this works decently well and for a minimal cost (laminator)

      Virginia Charm Hi, Virginia (: I have the same issue. (:

    • @SeafordShores
      @SeafordShores  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bianca D
      Thank you for the compliments. I am using both the Apache (newly acquired from Amazon) and the Fellowes. I think some times it's hit and miss...nothing is ever consistent with this foiling. (that is unless you have one of those $3000 machines... which i do not)) When I first made this video, it was done in one take and I was really shocked how nicely this printed...foiled. I had misplaced the paper that you see in the video and assumed that I had printed it on a glossy sheet... well, I found it again the other day and it was actually printed on cardstock. That was a big surprise. :)
      At last check, Amazon has the Apache for about $70 and I'm not sure about the where the Fellowes is available right now... either one will do you nicely, However, if you get the Apache, never just turn it off... always turn down the temp and allow it to cool for at least 20 - 30 minutes. Also, always use a cover sheet... the plastic sheet works well as well as the folders that you can buy. I don't have a hard and fast rule on which one to use because I'm constantly getting different results with both. I apologize for not responding sooner... Any other questions, just let me know.

    • @Bianca-ye2ji
      @Bianca-ye2ji 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @SeafordShores  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes sir.. I am aware... and in my explanation, i did say that I now use the apache with awesome results... way down there in the comments, another viewer told me about the tension screws... it made all the difference in the world and I love this machine... I keep this video for others to see that a lower-priced laminator can do the job also. I PREFER the apache. :) (it's quicker)

      Paper is / isn't important. Sometimes, it depends on the day. ...not really, but the paper i used in this video was a porous cardstock... not something you would think would offer up such good results, but it did. there are plenty of other times I've used that kind of paper and got horrible results. Same goes for a very nice smooth paper... sometimes great results... sometimes... not so much.

      any kind of "printable" clear sheet will work as it will handle the heat.
