I loved Richard Nixon. I'm well aware of Watergate but then again, I doubt he was the mastermind of all that. He got us out of Vietnam, made peace with China, lowered the voting age from 21-18, created the EPA and wanted to do more but then was forced to leave.
The Peace Accords were signed on Nixon's watch, so yes, President Nixon did get America out of the Vietnam War. I remember President Nixon's speech to the nation a few days after he was sworn in for a second term.
@@dgvjyshrm correct me if I’m wrong but weren’t those close allies to the USSR at the time ? I’m sure their must have been some reason for supporting China at the time.
From what I've heard, Clinton took a lot of Foreign Policy Advice from Nixon. Which makes sense because on FP Nixon dominated, I think a lot of this can be attributed to Kissinger however.
Before he even met Kissinger, President Nixon travelled to many nations, first as part of the fact-finding team to Europe which later led to the Marshall Plan as freshman Congressman from California; as Vice-President, numerous countries, on behalf of President Eisenhower (remember the famous Kitchen Debate with Khruschev; in 1967, toured more countries to see for himself, the world's problems first-hand and discussions with various world leaders (Charles DeGaulle had enormous respect for Nixon!). By the time, he became our nation's 37th President, Nixon already had a solid grasp of foreign policy. Far more sophisticated than some of his predecessors and successors. Sure, Kissinger helped, but in the end, the accomplishments are Richard Nixon.
For all the muck about Watergate, Clinton knew that Nixon was a true expert in foreign policy, and would constantly ask Nixon for advice. If Nixon were alive today (and sound-minded) I wonder if Obama would ask him for advice?
I think Nixon and Clinton both were effective presidents! Both made mistakes and had some personal issues, like all of us, but I think they were both equally progressive. It's amazing as late as 1994, there was so much less partisanship like there is today. Years ago the opposition looked at the opposition as competition, not as the enemy. The opposite sides would debate their differences on the floor, then go out and have a beer together afterwards. Not anymore, such a shame!
I felt President Clinton did a great job at this funeral. I lived during the Nixon Presidency and liked him very much. He was an effective leader even though he certainly was not perfect. But, we never have had a perfect leader and we never will. Judge the man Richard Nixon by his entire life not just Watergate. President, Vice President, husband, father and grand father.
Surprisingly, partisanship used to be worse than it is now! In the 1800s we'd have duels, and debates of the 13th amendment involved senators calling each other idiots. During their debates, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson called each other traitors to the Union and dictators. But you are right-politics is a 24 hour thing now, instead of the 9-5 it should be.
I agree. He was so brilliant in many ways and ahead of the times. A man with public charm w/ our own enemies, yet a self-destructive personality in many ways.
You are right about Reagan. People who were there said he seemed utterly confused that day. His last speech was two months earlier, and even Reagan himself confessed he was having troubles then.
True. Some people would maybe say that that’s his “listening” face. And I usually would agree with that. But apparently Nancy had to direct him to their seats and he seemed out of it. And there’s a quote from the Killing Reagan book that is just gold - both former Republican presidents were in their 80s, yet Ford looked just fine but Reagan was clearly not ☹
@fireemblem1992 Very interesting to listen to BC talk about this. Nixon didn't need to do that because he was going to win regardless. But he was so insistent on settling scores that it cost him his political career.
@1973mazdarx4coupe That's true. Clinton graciously accepted Nixon's counsel. The two would talk by telephone and, to his credit, President Clinton never disrespected Mr. Nixon or gave in to the hatred some in his party felt for the him. Richard Nixon made a disastrous series of decisions in the early 1970s, and nobody paid more of a price for those mistakes than did he and his presidency. Still, he had something to offer his nation, and President Clinton was wise to accept Nixon's advice.
So true. Clinton fit those same thoughts: he, like all presidents and like all of us, made mistakes - but one thing Clinton could _always_ do, was give a great, thoughtful, and on occasions almost poetic speech. He has done that countless times. He did it here. It felt right; it felt appropriate - and undoubtably Richard Nixon's family and friends were grateful for it.

He did make massive mistakes when President but he spent his whole life after paying for it and trying to make up for it, becoming one of the finest and most respected elder statesmen America has ever had.
