  • Introducing a not so known model: the Ottoman 1909 sword for the cavalry which was a very practical weapon that unfortunately
    appeared too late & in the wrong time to show its true potential.
    Small note: I mention a Brazilian cavalry sword model 1899 and its similar form to the British 1899 sword however it looks like it should instead be
    the Brazilian model 1880 sword, appearing way before the British!
    Stats
    Sword length: 100cm / 39.5''
    Blade length: 84cm / 33''
    Blade width: 29mm
    Blade thickness (back part): 7mm
    Blade point of balance: 14cm
    Weight of sword: 1100gr

    In my opinion, the Turkish design seems more ergonomic than the British one.

    Now this is something I haven't seen before.. Interesting..
    I think I like the curved version better, especially with the whole crescent moon thing going on..

    • @pinswords

      It does look a bit more fun to handle but the blade feels heavier, harder to control and the grip has a broken section so I can see why it was replaced by the 1909.

  • @HypocriticYT

    Grip somewhat similar to the 1908p British troopers sword. Also easy disassembly for repairs

    I think its interesting that after so many centuries using a curved sword, the Ottomans end up adopting the European straight sword.

    What's your thoughts on the blade design? The Pipe back was always criticised in Britain and was replaced in the mid 1840S

      Is the guard wide enough to cover the hand? If so then it's the trooper version from 1943.

    Interesting history! What standard issue military sword do you think would be the best for trimming the hedges in your front yard, whilst bellowing and wearing a horse-head mask at 3 AM in the morning?
    (Looking to impress my noisy neighbors with my blade skills)
    Thanks!

    • @mostlychimp5715
      @mostlychimp5715 ปีที่แล้ว

      For thin-branched hedges I would think a broad, thin slashing blade would be favored. Perhaps a yatagan, but if you're looking for a standardized model perhaps the Brit infantry 1822 pipe-back? The US 1917 cutlass might do but the edge may not be fine enough.

      Ah yes, the 1907 Puerto-Seguro sword. I had a bunch of them and will probably cover the model in a future video.
      Two versions were made in 1943 with the eagle and cross: the full sized version for cavalry and the reduced version for NCOs; which one do you have?

      None I think, they look very similar but the curvature and/or width of the blades won't match.

    Hey Pavel, Jannes here. Question: you mention brass handles to be less suitable for dessert warfare. What is the reason for this?

    • @pinswords
      @pinswords  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jannes, my man! From what I read in French documents it seems that sand scratches brass and damages it over time (one reason why officers from the Army of Africa preferred their iron hilted swords).
