Rugby is Australias version of USAs wrestling essentially.
Quite good techniques and fitness that transfers over. Not to mention that lack of neck (a lot of rugby players have short necks cause of big traps or learn to tuck there neck in very far to avoid injuries and absorb a tackle) helps counter submission artists.

That 3rd fight was the ultimate decider that we're in Volk's era now though. Aldo, Max, and then Volk each with their own reign. But Max did earn it back even if it was for that last time.

There's several things you can't do to Volk: You can't break him. You can't outlast him. You can't out-gas him.
As well: He's *very* hard to submit (the best couldn't do it). He's *very* hard to KO (only once 10 years ago).
So that leaves a *very* narrow path to victory over Volk!
And the KO was a when he was fighting a welterweight lol

the way volk used to be as big as he was when he was playing rugby, to not only to lose weight train mma at 24 then to become one of the greatest fighters. it’s astonishing what he’s doing with little time he’s had. he’s my favorite fighter because he embodies a true mixed martial artist. he combines everything together and puts it all in 1. his striking wrestling iq etc. he’s truly one of the greats. i try to mimic my style after him
I swear guys that come down from a big weight are just built different. Like look at ‘Killa Gorrilla’ Cannonier their muscles just seem so much more compact

And if I'm not mistaken the position that he played in Rugby is a position that the bigger, heavier players usually play. He is the baddest man on the planet under 175lbs, but he would still walk thru 90% of fighters middleweight and up as well. He's just a bad bad man.
Love and support Volk but I don't think he can stand up against MW guys. 40lbs of weight on scale is a lot let alone the extra 5-10% they may gain. Plus the reach and height differences I doubt he do well against anyone above WW

This guy is honestly built different. To go from dominating rugby league (brutal sport) to UFC (even more brutal) and be p4p number 1 is unbelievable. Definitely one of the greats

He won that islam fight. The fact that he TOOK ISLAM DOWN and was actually on top throwing down bombs at the end of that fight was absolutely astounding. In my opinion he's cemented himself up there with GSP and Jon Jones as one of the all time GOATs.
I'm a huge volk fan but Islam won that fight.
A few more for his legacy and he will be the undisputable GOAT. Will have a better resume than anyone else in MMA

Volk and Aldo are neck and neck for me at FW goat, if he defends once more he has it for me. The way people were calling him a BW, and the fact that he was pounding on a “weigh bully” at light weight, tells me he’s the true pfp king, and that he’s likely the pfp greatest ever.
I got volk over aldo tbh in fw goat and mostly cuz of the conor loss i think that fights plays a huge role in it aswell

I too notice how unshakable Volk's mindset was and I thought it would be broken by Dagestanis like how Conor, Dustin, Justin, Olivera etc... have. Boy I was wrong, I should have believe him the moment he escaped Ortega's guillotine. And holy fck that Round 5, he's the one on top of Islam! He does indeed have an tremendous heart, strength and mindset. He has no quit in him and I don't think someone in the 145,155, and 170 have stronger mindset than him.

Volk and Max are two champs that can go to a decision almost every fight they have and nobody minds that they didn’t get a finish. Sometimes a 25 minute beat down is more entertaining than a quick KO.

I didn't become a Fan of Alex until he fought Brian Ortega. After he got out of the 2 positions that would have tapped anyone else, I said you can NOT deny how Great this guy is and he has proven it over and over. Respect!!!
I’ve respected him the whole time, but the first time I rooted for him was against Islam. I love Yair’s style, though, so I’ll probably be rooting against Alex again in his next fight. Alex is weird, I usually root for his opponents, but I’m never mad when he wins because he’s such a level headed down to earth guy.
