Surely the hottest part of the exhaust is the headers? Wrapping the exhaust up to the silencer would increase the heat on the packing and burn it out faster then if the heat was to just disperse in the wind, I only ride my dirtbike in a cold climate so it does well to disperse heat all on its own provided I don’t sit there idling with no airflow
The wrap is there to save the starter motor brushes housing, not to mention my boots! where i live and ride ambient temps tend to get pretty hot 🥵 and if riding in soft sand or tight single track over here things get warm. As for it burning out the packing - may make things slightly worse though constant high speed/revs will blow out the packing regardless. The bigger destroyer of packing is vortices at the entry to the muffler from the mid pipe. This is where the packing starts to be removed in the turbulent gas flow, even where the stock Arrow packing was getting stripped out - and that was pre wrap.
@@YnotadvOz does it even need the packing in the arrow pipe? It may increase the flow of your exhaust letting it cool down quicker? Or does that make the bike not run as nice when the packin is burnt out
@@BigBergJohnson yes, aside from noise no packing messes with air flow and engine running as a result. Like pulling out the Arrow muffler insert makes the bike obnoxiously loud it also messes with the engine running everywhere other than top end.
I wonder what after market pipes are on the market for it. That exhaust sounds like a weak point to me that could be solved with a with a different exhaust. I remember the Leo Vince exhaust used to be absolutely wicked on the older huskies
@@BigBergJohnson not sure, I believe Arrow have stopped making the single pipe for them though they still have a twin system available as far as I know. Wouldn’t be too hard to get a custom link pipe made to suit different muffler.
Hi Greg - thanks mate, excellent and informative. - i've just picked up a 2020 model with 480km on the clock for 6K. I'm looking to make this into a light weight adventure bike - it's got the arrow single pipe, safari tank and pro taper bars. Has the Husky plastics and they need a tidy up .. Where did you get your sticker kit?. Do you know if there is a rear luggage rack that suits these?
G'day mate, Ringmaster did the sticker kit - they have the templates and make good quality stuff from my experience. As far as rear racks, there may be a couple of people who have run them, though i'd be reluctant to be putting any load up high and rearwards hanging off the final part of the subframe. Personally i use saddle bags and keep the heavy stuff low & forwards.
Hi Greg, Great video thanks for the honest review. I have just bought a 2021 model as a trail bike and something to follow the kids around. are you changing the oil and filters as a kilometer or hour measurement. Thanks again for the video.
Honestly it depends, I service based on type of riding I have been doing. If it’s more slow going single track or heavy sand type riding where the bikes clutch and I are working harder I service more frequently. If I’m light ADV type of riding I’m happy to let it run out to 1500-2000km. So it really depends on what I have been doing or what I might have planned coming up. If I drop oil between 500-1000km I might not bother changing filter as I have rarely seen anything in either the screens or the paper filter when I cut them open. I keep a pretty comprehensive service history and the bike is now at 10729km and still going great. Still no change in compression test or valve clearance.
@@YnotadvOz Thanks Greg, This is why I bought this bike is its reputation for reliability, as i am just trail riding and chasing my kids around and it is good value. I was thinking of the oil changes on type of usage as well and use the service intervals for the valves. Once again thanks for your advice keep us in the loop with your experience on the SWM as I have subscribed to keep an eye out for your videos.
@@adamg6199 engine wise my experience is that they are great. The stock EFI fueling, like all new bikes, is compromised IMO. I ran a EJK setup for quite a while which was a marked improvement and more recently fitted up a Power commander 5. Not sure where you are based but the SWM Australia & NZ as well as SWM USA pages have plenty of info.
Great video Greg & nice summary. If I might ask, which fuel filter, starter motor & relay did you pick that perform better than the stock ones? I have the SM model and was wondering about switching the starter motor & relay as well because I've seen people complain about them. I haven't run into any issues with the stock ones yet but I want to be on the safe side. I've also seen that people try to route the valve cover breather to someplace else than the throttle body to avoid gunk getting back into the motor. What's your take on this? Cheers!
G’day mate, my starter motor failed around the 4K mark so I bought a Ducati version to suit the 2010 Husky from eBay and it’s been on for 8.5K trouble free to date. I also use a 220CCA Lithium battery and have the fuelling tuned pretty well now using a PCV. The relay was only changed as a cheap precaution in case the contacts had been burnt when the starter windings failed, the relays are common and just one I found via eBay. I run a Golan 10 micron fuel filter pre injector as I’m also running a 12 port injector so potentially more prone to blockage if anything gets by the 40 micron I tank filter. The in tank pump and filter are common to KTM etc, I’m running a Quantum kit for the Husky. I get minimal blow by into the intake boot during normal running so I’m not convinced it’s worthwhile for my use. The only time I see excessive oil in intake boot is if bike has been lying on RHS draining oil from valve cover, the flip side to this is potential to get dirt, dust or moisture into the rocker cover if exiting external to the air boot so for me it’s not worth it. Haven’t seen any detrimental effects to intake valves etc from oil vapours from rocker cover, mine have been clean as and I find it pretty easy to remove throttle body and clean occasionally if required.
Awesome & thank you for the extensive details in your reply. I only have 2k in the bike as I haven't had much opportunity to ride it to be honest so your video and this reply gave me a good roadmap for what to expect in the future. I'm part of the UK and US SWM groups as well for this matter and I'm also thinking on getting Dave's tune-up kit for the bike this year. Not so much for power but rather for efficiency and getting rid of the lean mapping by default, so I guess I'll have the same 12 port injector as you do. Thanks again for everything and I wish you a wonderful 2022 season.
@@balageH yes I was running Dave’s kit, and I did end up doing some dyno work after this video.
