      Hi Benju!
There are different pathways to becoming an oncology pharmacist. The more traditional route would be to pursue a general PGY1 hospital based residency followed by a PGY2 in oncology. If you would really like to stand out as a candidate, you may even want to pursue BCOP certification. However, that is not the only way in obtaining a similar position. If you are already practicing as a pharmacist and would like to pursue a more specialized career path, there are resources and trainings you can complete to help prepare you for the position. Highly recommend joining HOPA as a starting point for some of these resources and perhaps even develop a mentorship with another practitioner. Another uncommon path could be to complete a PGY1 pharmacy practice residency with both inpatient and outpatient hematology/oncology experiences. This will allow you to be exposed to various practice areas for oncology pharmacists and help you decide which route to take. It is possible to obtain an oncology pharmacist position this way. Of course in a more competitive market, pursuing PGY2 training will definitely make you stand out as a candidate. Hope this helps :)

Thank you for your inquiry! There are many pharmacy postgraduate training programs that prepare pharmacists to specialize in oncology practice. An oncology pharmacy residency program offers focused training to gain the necessary knowledge and skills to practice as an oncology pharmacist.
A comprehensive list of ASHP-accredited, candidate, and pre-candidate pharmacy residency programs within the United States is available at www.ashp.org/professional-development/residency-information/residency-directory. To identify programs dedicated to oncology pharmacy practice, we suggest filtering your search to PGY2 residency programs in oncology pharmacy.
For further guidance on determining your next career steps including pursuing postgraduate training, please reach out to us directly at transpharmd.com/contact-us. We hope that this information is helpful and look forward to supporting your career journey!
