  • General Allen discusses ethical and leadership challenges for the U.S. and its allies in the Long War against militant Islamists. He traces the decades long development of extremism from the attack against the USS Cole, through the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, to the present struggle in Syria. Noting that he was Deputy Commandant of Midshipmen during the 9/11 attacks, and a combat commander in Iraq, his talk focuses on the effects this is having on midshipmen at the Academy, and Cadets at sister institutions, as they move from the academies to command. Through an examination of SLA Marshall's "Armed Forces Officer, and its chapter on the officer's commission, he conveys the gravity of moral responsibility shouldered by officers in the U.S. forces.
