    Glad to see the old Argosy gave good service. I worked at Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft Baginton factory during the years of Argosy production. Great firm to work for. Happiest days of my working life there. There's still a few around in museums here in the UK G _ APRL resides in a museum just across the airfield from where she was built. I visit her often and brings back happy memories.

      I love to pop and look at aprl aswell, great unusual aircraft. I have only one memory from.my childhood of seeing an argosy flying over my home, it was fairly high aswell but certainly recognisable..and pretty loud! Wish i saw more

    The Argosy I will always remember as my most favourite and privileged to have been able to fly in tthis aircraft with its impressive design as a child and teenager to my home in the Chatham Islands landing at the airport named after my grandfather Inia William Tuuta Memorial Airport Karewa Point Chatham Islands. Thank you for sharing the video clip.

    Wonderful aircraft that never got the recognition it deserved. I did several parachute jumps from it in the mid 60s. Good memories from those days, which also included the Hastings and Beverley.

    Fascinating, I remember jumping from one on Salisbury Plain just before they left RAF service, a lot more comfortable than the Herc lol.

    Same engines as the Viscount, both had the Rolls Royce Dart and the same lovely sound they made.

    The wing of the Argosy was directly based on the wing of the Avro Shackleton. It was later strengthened when BEA expressed interested in the Argosy. Development of the Argosy was occurred during post-war period of amalgamation of British aero companies in Hawker-Siddeley when there were plenty of good ideas and good designers but limited development funds and markets.

      didn't know that . Dad worked on the aircraft while at A.W. in the 60's

      @@fredtedstedman Apparently Sir Roy Dobson, Chairman of Hawker, noticed a resemblance between the Armstrong Whitworth designed wing and that of the Avro Shackleton III and directed that the Avro wing be used instead as a cost saver. The cost savings evaporated, of course, after the necessary redesign and strengthening occurred.

    Very sad....to see an aircraft land for the last time.
    Never understood why the Argosy was not more successful.

      Apparently aircrew complained about the engine noise. Some nonsense about High Tone deafness ?

    I always remember the 4 engine Argosy flying over our house regular in the early 70,s when i was a young kid heading to EMA East Midlands Airport just a few miles away, I always looked up when i heard the loud roar of the engines and was fascinated by its strange fat shape and how slow it seemed to be passing over our house. I think it was ABC carriers or Air Bridge Cargo but not 100% sure.

    Did Load Control (weight & balance) for this aircraft when it was in service with BEA at Heathrow. I very much regret not keeping a balance chart for it.

    0:38 to 0:40 small UFO crossing beneath the Argosy from left to right! No bird can fly at that speed!

    • @raymondo7796
      @raymondo7796 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I slowed it to 25% and it looks like a bird just close to the camera so looks like a fast UFO at normal speed. Had to look several times though!

    Whats really interesting is that here we are in 2021 and airfrieght is being done by some old ex Air NZ 737_300 and they are having constant mechanical issues. The airfrieght service in NZ at the moment is an absolute joke.
