Rembrandt has and always will be one of the greatest painters that ever existed do not think for one second that the work she commissioned he did not have his own thoughts involved in his paintings he shows it time and time again it is underlined in his subtle features in his paintings he was wise but not stupid and what he was painting he created the best of what he could do whether he liked it or not

Art history is worth studying. It's not to be confused with the history of art or art appreciation. This is a broadcast made for TV. There are far more interesting things to learn if you deicide to study it. Go for it! You won't regret and after four years or so, perhaps you will be able to critique WJ's interpretation. It investigates how it functioned, its viewers and even the global connections (either in images, influences or materials for example). Whereas the history of art is more about western art styles or labels (given to a time period by later generations, (think 'gothic' for example). This is very misleading as there were a variety of 'styles' in any given period and often the labels given started out as derogatory names. Art appreciation follows the narratives of the history of art as if following a religion. It upholds the popular paintings or art objects as if they are holy relics. There is no deep understanding of the meanings or social functions and no desire to learn. These are those people called the "cultural livestock" by one witty writer 😆

Waldo, you are one fantastic storyteller, I always enjoyed your old TV travel series, the way you dissect art, history, people or events is second to none and bring a perspective on things very few individuals can or have the capability of doing. You resurrect and bring life to otherwise dead or forgotten times in our history by connecting the dots that can make those otherwise meaningless people or events relevant so we can all give them a second thought maybe they can leave in us some teachings of value. This guy has converted story telling and narration into a real art, he makes you feel something instead of having apathy for the subject. Waldemar, within your great insights and explanations your wit and wonder lies the golden key of your understanding of the Catholics sensibility! So many well informed and well intended modern eyes look on certain paintings with a degree of 'colour blindness' that your corrective glasses dispel. The Arnolfini picture is beautifully and lovingly restored - what troubled me as a newly married man gazing at the picture as my wife told me of the "wedding" makes sense to me now as a widower. There is an eternal wedding but they are on the other side of the great devide - the pain of rememberence and the dark tones that troubled my young eyes is all too understood now, "grief is the price we pay for love". A marriage cert a double death cert and the promise of eternal life beyond the crucifixion. Keep up the wonderful work correcting my colour blindness of so many paintings - sacred and secular. I have never been interested in classical art but this popped up and i decided to watch it....i have to say....i really enjoyed it.....this guy is brilliant at interpreting the painting .....this coupled with the facts of the painting some how bought it life for me.....his way with words were not only informative but also fun....i know learned a lot! Loved it !
These works of art are like photographs Into the time period that they were created and Waldemar is the focusing of a camera lens as he pours detail and color and background and contemporary history and most of all his passion into each picture. We are fortunate to have Waldemar.

Being an inveterate HISTORY geek, it was purely by accident that I discovered this History Professor.....No..I'm NOT on the wrong channel. Waldemar has taught me the most delicious "insider" History...while he awakened in me a heretofore completely unexpected thirst for Art. TWO great disciplines for the price of one: HISTORY, which has fascinated me since age 10. Art, which, for the most part, I scorned. Like an idiot. Waldemar fed the one...awakened a fierce devotion to the other. And I watch for his "PERSPECTIVE" ART VIDEOS with genuine excitement. THANKS, WALDEMAR...for making Life WONDERFUL for me! WIN-WIN!
"Bombastic Side eye" is the expression of the Mrs in the Gainsborough painting". My 10 yr old girl threw that phrase out to me...clearly. the kids now are using more vocabulary than I and my 5th grade friends did. That Mrs is DEFINITELY to be avoided!

Although I truly appreciate classic art I am not very knowledgeable about this area. My husband and I recently went to an art museum in Norfolk Virginia that was doing an exhibit on M. C. Escher, enjoyed looking at all his art. It would be neat to see if Perspective did a doc on him, like maybe what did his his English and European contemporaries make of his style. :)

I'm always for everything in book form but I have to say art works are great on digital video and also the aliveness of being in the settings as WJ takes us all over the world is a real special treat on digital video. It wouldn't have the same immersive quality in a book. However there are wonderful picture books where you can see these super star pictures and nowadays you can find these books very cheap second hand since people prefer the "Tom Ford" book on their library table, haha, there is a little dig at the world.
I absolutely love this show. As a self taught artist I missed out on all the history associated so feel like a student learning from you. I need more :)

This was one of the paintings we had to write about when I did an Arts Foundation Course with the Open University in the 1980's. The only thing I can remember I noticed at the time was that I thought Mr Andrews sleeve seemed to be tight around his bicep perhaps alluding to the fact he had all the power. He was the strong one.
Meurent was an accomplished painter whose work was regularly selected for exhibition by the Salon Jury. Her father was an engraver / etcher and mother a milliner, so not such a mystery that she became an artist. W.J. is a showman who speculates on the meanings of paintings often without any basis in fact but he is not alone in that. Manet's handling of paint shocked at least as much as the honest depiction of modern subject matter.
This is just my personal take, but if you really look at Victorine in the painting, REALLY look at her, she's sizing you up. She likes what she sees, and is inviting you to join them. The female nude had always been about the male gaze. They were unconscious objects of male appreciation and lust. But the whole painting is about Victorine's gaze. She's looking at you, the viewer, the way you're supposed to be able to look at her. She's taking the control: between you and her, she's the dominant one. I think that's why the painting aroused such strong negative feelings. Whether they realized it or not, the critics were subconsciously reacting to a modern woman not only taking control of her own sexuality, but asserting herself as the dominant partner in the sexual exchange.
I agree but I think this was a gaze that these 'respectable' men were used to - the gaze of the prostitute, looking knowingly and scornfully at another punter (UK) or john (USA).
Had that lady in the 1st painting invited me to her country house for a weekend, unlike Mr Waldemar, "I" would have gladly accepted...and she would've had a smile in that painting along with very lively rosy cheeks and "unspeakable" memories 😘

The last one by Van Eyck was my favourite, the minute details in the mirror are incredible and the interpretation of the painting is haunting.

So many well informed and well intended modern eyes look on certain paintings with a degree of 'colour blindness' that your corrective glasses dispel.
The Arnolfini picture is beautifully and lovingly restored - what troubled me as a newly married man gazing at the picture as my wife told me of the "wedding" makes sense to me now as a widower. There is an eternal wedding but they are on the other side of the great devide - the pain of rememberence and the dark tones that troubled my young eyes is all too understood now, "grief is the price we pay for love".
A marriage cert a double death cert and the promise of eternal life beyond the crucifixion.
Keep up the wonderful work correcting my colour blindness of so many paintings - sacred and secular.

Wat valt er nog te achterhalen vraag ik mij af ,history is als water het stroomt alle kanten op behalve de goeie kant,er is altijd geknoeid met de werkelijkheid ook eeuwen terug ,niets is op waarheid gedocumenteerd zelfs de bijbel is gemanipuleerd zoveel waardevolle gegevens verdraaid door x aantal die van hun status niet wilden wijken en daarmee Godsschepping schade hebben berokkend waar wij allen als erfdeel voor moeten rechtstaan en terechtstaan maar dat zal de tijd ons leren,waar ik mij van bewust werd hoe wij mensen bedonderd worden door de Wereldbeheersers en voor hun moeten kruipen om wat van hun koperlappen te krijgen om nog te zwijgen over dat God een verkeerde ras heeft gecreëerd namelijk als mensaap hoe ver kun je van God afstaan vroeg ik mij af als men dat denkt Eugenetica zijn van die mensen en tevens hun ondergang ,hun HP braincontrol hoe verdoemde gedachtengang waar zij nu alles op baseren een ras te scheppen die zij onder de duim hebben en willekeurig kunnen uitschakelen,ik weet dat ik ook door hun onder het vergrootglas zit de zogenaamde ART project hun zogenaamde geestelijke gesteldheid van mensen willen controleren wie is er nou Er KRANKJORUM en alles in die verdomde DIGITALIS COMPUTER STOPPEN EN DIE STRAKS VOOR GOD MOET GAAN FUNGEREN en een wereldreligie op poten moeten zetten en daar voldoen jullie ook aan om gegevens eraan te leveren alleen het lukt nog niet zo voorspoedig namelijk niet iedereen is even omkoopbaar en daar werd ik mij bewust van door een schedel vol met diamanten beplakt waar een zekere Damian een tong naar uitstak ik dacht toen van mijn schedel blijf jij af heb die glinster steentjes niet nodig geen parels of gouden ring door mijn neus of vinger als ik daarmee mijn mensheid voor in moet ruilen zitten jullie met zijn allen goed verkeerd gewikkeld want een doodskleed heeft geen enkele ZAK BIJ ZICH waar het in kan om mee te nemen, zie maar wat je aan kunstschatten in die piramide werd gevonden om mee te nemen op die reis ha ha ha dacht ik daar ligt het om te verstoffen niets ging mee naar boven domme mensen toen en nu nog steeds zo ,bovendien heb er sowieso er niet veel mee op al dat uiterlijke vertoon ,het zijn net van die dieren als kameleons verkleuren of papegaaien die ook bij de Azteken werd gezien als valse zon of bij apen een gouden ring maar blijft een lelijk ding ,ja triest is het wel en dat zag ik ook in het schilderij van ,van EIK en vooral in die schilderij die als gestolen werd geacht en die eens was afgedrukt in een kalender die ik vond aan de achterkant van een plaatje omdat ik die harlekijn leuk vond maar bleek ook deze te bevatten, toeval ? Nee toeval bestaat niet het had zo moeten zijn en het zette mij aan het denken dat rijkdom zegt het al ,behoorlijk RIJK MAAR DOM ,IK GA LIEVER DAN NAAR HEMELRIJK ( Hem-el-rijk) zit ook een IJK ERIN ( eik) komt van woord ijken ( geijkt ) of is het EIKEN ? 😅😂na ja nieuwsgierig ben ik altijd geweest ( wie ,wat,waarom, doen wij elkaar de DAS OM 👈😲
I have never been interested in classical art but this popped up and i decided to watch it....i have to say....i really enjoyed it.....this guy is brilliant at interpreting the painting .....this coupled with the facts of the painting some how bought it life for me.....his way with words were not only informative but also fun....i know learned a lot! Loved it !
This series is so absolutely wonderful. I never get enough of this wonderful stuff !
These works of art are like photographs Into the time period that they were created and Waldemar is the focusing of a camera lens as he pours detail and color and background and contemporary history and most of all his passion into each picture.
We are fortunate to have Waldemar.

Being an inveterate HISTORY geek, it was purely by accident that I discovered this History Professor.....No..I'm NOT on the wrong channel.
Waldemar has taught me the most delicious "insider" History...while he awakened in me a heretofore completely unexpected thirst for Art.
TWO great disciplines for the price of one: HISTORY, which has fascinated me since age 10. Art, which, for the most part, I scorned. Like an idiot.
Waldemar fed the one...awakened a fierce devotion to the other. And I watch for his "PERSPECTIVE" ART VIDEOS with genuine excitement.

"Bombastic Side eye" is the expression of the Mrs in the Gainsborough painting". My 10 yr old girl threw that phrase out to me...clearly. the kids now are using more vocabulary than I and my 5th grade friends did. That Mrs is DEFINITELY to be avoided!

i studied these same paintings in art history. the arnolfini at the end is now a sad painting for me. it used to be a symbol of future hope, new life, a contract between two people. this was fascinating. thank you
This programme is an art class taken out of the classroom. The language is powerful, the presenter, compelling and the content, rich and enlightening.
Even when my own research leads me to a conclusion different from his, I love his presentation!

Love this - I first noticed the picture of mr. and mrs Andrews in one of John Berger's " Ways of seeing " episodes. I just love when art historians explains " the behind the picture " story. You appreciate the art and the painting so much more when you are given an insight into the context and the artist behind the picture. I just love cultural history ❤❤

Re TG’s portrait of the Andrews- Often times the joy or lack of joy in the countenance of a wife reflects how her husband truly regards and cherishes her.
My husband and I recently went to an art museum in Norfolk Virginia that was doing an exhibit on M. C. Escher, enjoyed looking at all his art. It would be neat to see if Perspective did a doc on him, like maybe what did his his English and European contemporaries make of his style. :)

I'm always for everything in book form but I have to say art works are great on digital video and also the aliveness of being in the settings as WJ takes us all over the world is a real special treat on digital video. It wouldn't have the same immersive quality in a book. However there are wonderful picture books where you can see these super star pictures and nowadays you can find these books very cheap second hand since people prefer the "Tom Ford" book on their library table, haha, there is a little dig at the world.

Waldemar is brilliant
This was one of the paintings we had to write about when I did an Arts Foundation Course with the Open University in the 1980's. The only thing I can remember I noticed at the time was that I thought Mr Andrews sleeve seemed to be tight around his bicep perhaps alluding to the fact he had all the power. He was the strong one.
Meurent was an accomplished painter whose work was regularly selected for exhibition by the Salon Jury. Her father was an engraver / etcher and mother a milliner, so not such a mystery that she became an artist. W.J. is a showman who speculates on the meanings of paintings often without any basis in fact but he is not alone in that. Manet's handling of paint shocked at least as much as the honest depiction of modern subject matter.

This is just my personal take, but if you really look at Victorine in the painting, REALLY look at her, she's sizing you up. She likes what she sees, and is inviting you to join them. The female nude had always been about the male gaze. They were unconscious objects of male appreciation and lust. But the whole painting is about Victorine's gaze. She's looking at you, the viewer, the way you're supposed to be able to look at her. She's taking the control: between you and her, she's the dominant one. I think that's why the painting aroused such strong negative feelings. Whether they realized it or not, the critics were subconsciously reacting to a modern woman not only taking control of her own sexuality, but asserting herself as the dominant partner in the sexual exchange.
I agree but I think this was a gaze that these 'respectable' men were used to - the gaze of the prostitute, looking knowingly and scornfully at another punter (UK) or john (USA).
