Just a thought, but what about turning off the fuel and letting the bike run off the excess in the tube until it dies? Then you wouldn't have much if anything in that tube when you remove it.
Does the gas tank need to be empty, or does turning the petcock to 'off' pretty much keep the fuel from leaking all the way out? (Excuse me if you've answered this already.)

You can do that if you plan accordingly. Not much run off when I removed it.

Turning off the petcock is good enough
