If Mara did control The Taken and become a sort of new Taken Queen, it's possible that she might use them to take pressure off her corsairs. But the use of the Taken comes with risks, and the coalition's Cabal, Fallen and Guardian forces will likely have thoughts of their own.

    You know, two years ago I would've just rolled my eyes at the prospect. "Yup, Mara up to her old tricks again, being sneaky and untrustworthy, tampering with dark powers seemingly for the sole purpose of sowing distrust among her own allies and being special." But of the many changes made over the years, Mara actually becoming a good, interesting character is one I like the most. She's finally realizing the harm she's done in her reckless, self-assured pursuit of power, and while her interest in taking Oryx's Throne does... *concern* me about her falling into her old ways, the Mara of today is ultimately a different character from the Mara of even Season of the Lost, let alone the rude, borderline narcissistic Queen of the Reef from Forsaken. Of anyone in the system, I probably trust her with that power the most. For now, at least.

    • @ASpaceOstrich
      @ASpaceOstrich 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      Its surprising how little her character had to change, both in motivation and even in action, for the perception of her to shift so drastically. Hell, theres an argument to be made she didn't change at all, she's just admitting to the flaws and negative reprecussions of her actions without necessarily changing them in any way. You could absolutely imagine the old Mara sending Crow into the portal, with him having become a Guardian due to a plot by her to gain power for herself. But the difference in perception with current day Mara doing the same thing is absolutely massive. I can't even really pinpoint the exact moment the change happened, though thats probably more due to me missing seasons. I'm guessing it was the season with the lay-lines and where Crow got his memories back that did it.

      Pretty much started with crow getting hawkmoon. That's when he first started being more than just the guardian under spiders boot and started becoming more of a fleshed out character as he and our guardian got close in lore. Mara was almost immediately on her typical bs when she found out he got revived but once she started calling him and he ignored said calls, she started moving towards the "nice mara" that people see today. The season Amanda died was probably the first time we saw her show a decent amount of care for someone elses feelings (outside of her queenswraths) as she interacted with her lightless queensguard but this current seasons exposition dumps have been doing the most heavy lifting to make people look at her as less toxic. It's mainly her dialog with crow being more soft spoken and caring instead of manipulative, her sympathizing with riven in the loss of a partner that changed them for the better, and her opening up to Petra, Osiris, and us on how she's feeling about all of this instead of just issuing commands. I admit I like her better because she's not quite as one note as she used to be but I still don't trust the queen. It's gonna take more than a few years of speaking a little more soft and with more care before I believe all that toxicity got flushed away. People can change for the better but all its gonna take is one bad day of writing for bungie to set her right back on her bullshit for not even a full season and all the "good mara" deeds won't matter anymore and we know bungie will do it. Look at lightfalls story: infinite potential with Neptune, the vex having interesting motivation, a darkness artifact to match the traveler, finally meeting Nezzy, new powerhouse characters beside our guardian that could have had interesting stories to tell ect. But instead we got a long winded strand training session, half the new power houses got killed seemingly right after we met them and didn't even have time to get invested, and had to wait for disconnected cutscenes and audio logs just to get exposition dumped afterwards. They fumbled as hard as they could have with that one. Hopefully they learned from it.

      Queen Mara has always been a good and interesting character. It's just that for whatever reason Bungie chose to hide all the good things about her in the lore and show only the worse things to players in seasonal content. She's never been reckless - even Osiris looks up to her because she has never missed forest for the trees (unlike him and so many others).
      And taking power from Oryx's Throne was the right thing to do - you can't fight overwhelming evil forces without power. In contrast, the Vanguard typically misses most threats and only reacts to bad thiungs after they've happened instead of trying to prevent them. There's nothing good about being so shortsighted and it only ultimately leads to a greater number of victims...

    I remember the week before the Taken King launched.
    The Taken world events were in place as a teaser for that week; having an army of the damn things drop on you during patrol without warning was humbling, they were weird and powerful and hard to kill and we didn't understand them.
    We forget just how much power creep has ocurred in Destiny.
    I'm of the opinion that the Taken basically won't survive past the Witness' destruction. Only those taken who have somehow maintained some kind of will of their own (anything half-taken, like Quira, Sloane, Riven etc, and the ascended taken of the court of Oryx such as Cra'adug) might survive. Anything else without the personal will to maintain itself will fade away.

    • @davef4214

      The Witness obtained this power, if it can, there must be a way Mara can and possibly retain such power after The Witness's death.

    • @ASpaceOstrich
      @ASpaceOstrich 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      The power creep has always saddened me because there are so many fascinating and engaging plots that we just can't have any more because the playerbase won't take them seriously. Even though Destiny isn't that kind of setting, players treat it like the kind of setting where defeating something means you can just walk over anything lesser than the previous threat. Which means we'll never get stories like Six Fronts. More grounded stories paradoxically have higher stakes, because when the threat is world ending or universe ending or what have you, its impossible for the players to lose. But a smaller, more grounded threat? We can lose that kind of fight.
      The fact that D1 jumped straight from "basic establishing story introducing you to the factions" to "billion year old hive gods" cut out so many potential plotlines. Though even then they were still able to do those more grounded stories. I'm not sure when exactly it stopped being possible, maybe Shadowkeep? D2 vanilla leaving the Fallen utterly gutted definitely had a hand in it. And Forsaken following that up with the near total annihilation of the Awoken and general Reef civilisation did a lot to eliminate vectors for smaller stories to happen.
      As the Witness has become a thing the ability to do a smaller threat has basically vanished. Which really sucks. The closest any enemy has come to defeating humanity, aside from Ghaul choosing his own pride over stealing the light, was Siviks slipping a nuke inside the city limits. He was seconds from basically rendering humanity extinct, given how devastating radiation is to guardians. That would have been a second collapse right there. Vanguard gone. Most guardians gone. City gone. But the story could potentially continue, so it was theoretically possible for Siviks to win.

      @@ASpaceOstrich i think i can sum it up this way:
      Destiny 1: Don't go to the moon, it's overrun and the last time we were there we lost a thousand guardians
      Destiny 2: put on Ride of the Valkyries, Rahool, because it's TANK TIME, WOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
      That's not to say i didn't like the intro to Shadowkeep, but there was quite a difference in tone.
      We've been in dangerous situations, but I'm struggling to think of a time since shadoweep that everything was really screwed without big smoke man go pop.
      Guardians have gone from being mythic heroes who have to be used in surgical strikes to just barely keep us alive to merely being a super elite force that's kind of taken for granted.
      We haven't become legend, we diminished.

    • @ASpaceOstrich
      @ASpaceOstrich 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Mm. Which is weird, because we've had a lot of our vulnerability disregarded by the story. Corruption was one of our biggest threats and we completely no sell it. They mostly stop referencing our constant attrition rate or the fact that going to places outside of Earth was actually really rare prior to the Red War. Like, as we've grown more powerful in terms of what we do in the narrative, we feel less powerful. It's the same thing with the stakes. The higher the stakes are, the lower the stakes feel.
      It's the classic video game protagonist problem, especially bad in MMO's. Where the more the game jerks you off about how powerful and amazing you are, the less powerful and amazing anything you do actually feels. @@SymbioteMullet

      @ASpaceOstrich I think the problem more comes from our guardian being a blank slate that likes and interacts with who bungie says they do. Every time we get an interesting lore bit where we get to choose something it ultimately goes nowhere because bungie wants everyone to have the same story. Remember choosing to side with the drifter or the vanguard (but not really the vanguard because Ikora's dog was not following orders)? It never went anywhere. Choosing to slay the knight in the adventure on titan or Mithrax? Doesn't matter, canonically we spared Mithrax ( and I distinctly remember killing both in one sword strike and saying the only good Zeno is a dead one but got no unique dialog because bungie didn't consider we'd kill both regardless of if we put thought to it or not), we didn't have the option to side with savathun when in the lore she very clearly liked the idea of working with our guardian specifically regardless of if she would have used us for her own gain I mean we're just a gun with paracausal power to the vanguard. The only one who made an effort to truely call us friend was Cayde and he's dead.... for now. We didn't get to side with the different factions in the city when they made their decisions after the endless night ect. Those plot lines got lost in the sauce in favor of a more over arching story about us fighting the travelers biggest simp who has the most EXTREME nihilistic views and is trying to force them on the universe. The only saving grace we have is how people in lore reacted to Amanda's death and what Saint 14 did the moment he heard savathun was back and we finished our business with her in season of the witch. Stories like that keep the universe grounded because bungie is still scared of player choice and lasting consequences

  • @ASpaceOstrich
    @ASpaceOstrich 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

    Byf, Corsairs can leave the Dreaming City at any time. But if they do, they can't come back in. Petra and the Guardians can come and go. Anyone else can go, but they can't come back. That's what made the curse so devious. Savathun set up a win/win scenario for herself. The awoken have to fight for the city over and over. If the stay, Savathun gained power from the fighting. If they chose to leave, Savathun's forces would come closer and closer to winning, gaining access to the distributary (and at the time, this was in pursuit of gaining the ability to make Imbaru real, but Bungie forgot that Imbaru was Savathuns goal, not a power she actually has).
    A whole bunch of corsairs have left the loop already. Dialogue from the one who gets wounded and bleeds out every cycle has confirmed this. She's mentioned that several friends have left already, but she's decided to stick it out, despite her particularly bad fate each loop. If she decided she wanted to leave, she could do so. The loop only enforces your actions to be the same if you're staying. It lets you leave.

    It makes a certain degree of sense. Mara's will is indomitable and her mastery of the ascendant plane would put her on the level of a hive god should she successfully claim the taken. The curse on the dreaming city could possibly be twisted to her advantage maybe?

    • @marcusvelez728
      @marcusvelez728 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Plausibly possible there is a way to possibly not to lift the curse of the dreaming scene but to reduce its effect speaking from riven created the dreaming city with the awoken. She knows the inside out of the places, mainly because of the wish and the wish that’s savathun asked, but ever since the witness got an inside, the traveler taken are now following the witness by the list of power vacuum in soul like the other TH-cam says the witness is inside the traveler and currently it has no surveillance on any guardian from the outside, it would mainly apply to the other taken because it has limit control But they are very few hive gods and in ruins war lord there has been proof that taken have been following orders of a wish dragon a dead one mainly it proves that Mara might be the last and powerful being in soul. The reason are now listening is because she’s literally powerful than hive god of war been cut off from her throne world literally so they’re literally power vacuum for the taking a follow any leader, but I think bungee might have an idea to lift the curse of the dream city, there’s a trick to it I think probably a theory of mine the curse was to be wish. If by chance Mara becomes like riven as a spirit, she might have access to the curse of the dreaming city not lift it, but to reduce it that might be possible but exploring the fact to control taken is a bad idea, the ticket have been under influenced by both the witness or and the hive gods. In fact, it’s a very bad idea in case in the future of Desitny of the final shape might betray us big risk.

      She's simply a character who seeks unique power in order to protect the system that she knows. The only problem with that is that she twisted that sense of protection into an unmitigated level of control over others because it was always easier to be tactful and secretive while on the surface proclaiming some form of greater purpose for those that serve her. Not to mention how she was always selfish with and would withhold the power she obtained. The change in her character comes not from her change in morals, because they really haven't changed, but with how she's now open to politics rather than some illuminati type shit and how she offers power to others instead of keeping it for herself.
      Although tbh, for me personally, I'd like to see her vent that desire for control by taking the reigns of the taken. Not to mention how it could spell big things for her singular hidden taken ahamkara egg...

    I would love to see Nokris take control of the taken. Before anyone says he is dead please bear in mind that his necromancies and connection to xol has brought him back before, it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to assume he'd come back again (and no he never had his own throne world so dying in the ascendant plane isn't proof that he can't come back). He and Savathun made a deal. Savathun gained knowledge of his necromancy and he gained knowledge of "the dreaming mind's talent". For those who don't know the "dreaming mind" is Quoria Blade Transformed, a vex mind that Oryx took but not before it was able to simulate his younger self. It was gifted to Savathun who used it to simulate Oryx's ability to create and control the taken before we destroyed it in the season of the splicer. If Nokris does come back and without the Witness to assert absolute dominion over the taken, he could very well become the next Taken King (I bet he'd love to gloat over his dead father's corpse if that ever happened).

It’s been too long both in game and irl, if it meant that it got DCVed I’d be fine with that, they’ve drawn it out too long and I’m almost done caring about the cycle. Something I think is extremely overlooked is the possibility for the guardian to control the taken to a degree. Sure. This idea could partly be wishful thinking of a taken subclass. But at the same time. Would it not make sense? We have time and time again proven ourselves of an extreme will. Something which is required to command then. On top of that, after the final shape we will have beaten nearly every being that has claimed dominance over the taken. Showing to a degree that we are more powerful. I don't know, I guess it would be hard to implement as all guardians would need to have access to it. Not just the main one. Regardless this is something that I feel makes a ton of sense in the lore and would also be very cool

If anyone had come close to the Witness in terms of the power to "Take", it would be Oryx. I haven't forgotten who stuffed Savathun's worm into a grenade launcher, then handed it to us and said "Keep it close. It won't be able to shut the hell up."
    More to the point, I haven't forgotten that Mara pledged herself to help us free the Shadow Legion's prisoners. Not because it benefited her personally, not because of Crow, but because the Guardians have proven themselves to be allies of the Awoken.
    I fully believe that if Mara was able to take control of the Taken in the Dreaming City, she'd use them only to help repel the attackers. I'll admit, fighting alongside the Taken sounds like a nice change from trying desperately to kill 5 of the bastard Psions before they can all turn into 10.

    Mara speaks with direct purpose. imo, "I ordered it to stop" is exactly what she means. She protesting it as a revelation. Because it worked. But it was just one Taken. So she's not sure about whether it would work en masse. But the fact that it worked in the Confluence - a place where she has power - carries an obvious, larger implication.
    I think if it had not worked, Mara would have confessed that detail. She's always been written with vulnerability; a willingness to share her despairs and her worries with us. And her relationship with Osiris has become one of immense trust. Otherwise, no way she would have abided him literally restraining her with Strand in front of Riven. At least, my take.

    Honestly, if Mara ever does want to control the power of the Taken, there is but one place she can go to, Titan, where Oryx's remains are still buried within the depths of the methane ocean. The reason I bring this up is because his body still radiates Taken Energy despite him being dead for a very long time. We were able to secure the remains after Ghosts in the Deep, and if Mara can get even the approval of Ikora, Mara might gain the title of Taken Queen.
    It's a massive stretch, I know, but it's something to consider given the power vacuum the forces of the Taken are currently in. Xivu Arath has been banished from her Throne World, the Disciples are dead, the Witness has left their forces outside of the Pale Heart in order to satisfy its selfish desires for the Final Shape. To take a quote from Spider-Man:
    "With great power comes great responsibility."
    If Mara can resist the corrupting power of the Taken and use it in a way to help not only her people within the Dreaming City, but for The Coalition, she will be the greatest force that the Witness ever dared faced, but if Mara fails and falls to corruption, then we will have to take her down, no matter what.
    Only time will tell.
