Sometimes it just makes sense to locate and mount electronic modules in an area that isn't the hottest place on a vehicle. Way to go Ivan. We need you on the west cost !

NO NO NO NO WEST COAST, SIR IVAN IN PA. I agree though mounting shit like that in the HOTTEST PLACES IS STUPID. I have a 4.0 in my Jeep & the intake is right above the exhaust header ? Fuel rail also gets pretty hot but I've put a lot of insulation on both ( PAIN IN THE ASS ) but it helps loads.

Some people put heatsink compound of the ICM to try to transfer some of the heat to the car's body. It looks like there is an exposed metal plate on the back of the module.

Ivan is the Passport to smooth running. The fan clutch replacement should make it more quiet and help with the gas mileage. Nice job Ivan. Most people who don't have the diagnostic tools would have tried replacing the coil and been disappointed when that didn't work. Heat is the enemy of electronics in the long run. Great tutorial.

Same. What I've learned is (j/k) to just go ahead and replace the MAF, crank position sensor, cam sensor, TPS, PVC valve, EGR, sparkplugs, coils and wires, fuel insjectors, all O2 sensors, all fuel pumps, plus all fluids and all filters, and most of the problems Ivan works on would be solved. And those that aren't mostly involve "green crusties" at a connector or damaged wires.

Lucky to find a replacement unit on Ebay for your customer who must have been delighted with the successful outcome. Was back to it's best behaviour judging from the road clips. Handy having a steep climb nearby to put them under pressure. Job well done.

What I really appreciated about this video was the value of the scope. I was going to say swap the coil. The missfire would have stayed with number four. That is the bad driver. now, I wonder what helped kill the original module and that replacement module?
lack of tuneup and resulting bad coil/s? I'd have looked at the coils/boots more closely just to be sure it doesn't bite back.
also I believe he said in previous video valve cover gasket/tube seal change, so I assume the tube plug was full of acrid acidic oil and arcing away (think what that does to coil current and what that would "harm" upstream) I'd say someone was repairing the symptoms and not the root cause in the past... ;)

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics

On my old Hondas (w/dizzy) and no spark condition, I would remove the cap and disconnect the wire at the igniter terminal that connects to the coil negative. Then connect a test light between battery (+) and igniter terminal. Crank the engine -- if the light flashes, igniter good, coil bad and vice versa. ICM is just a ground breaking switch.

  • @turboimport95
    @turboimport95 3 ปีที่แล้ว

You would think that gm part would fit other vehicles. The waste spark start up makes sense because it helps engine start faster. Also you should of got the customer to let u tear the old module apart and see if you could fix, Since its impossible to find.. would of been a cool video.

I used to work repairing televisions, and an older technician who worked on tube sets understood the importance of examining electrical waveforms (in those days, a cathode ray oscilloscope) like you do, called many people who just 'swapped out' tubes as 'tube jockeys'. Many times they were 'caught' with a misdiagnosis. For what initially was thought to require a 'coil pack swap out' proved more to be a time-waster in finding a solution (all those miles travelling without a misfire), but many times ICM's only present a 'fault condition' after several miles of travel in varied conditions, where OBD (on-board-diagnostics) is crucial in detecting a misfire, and the use of 3 traces on the 'pico scope' finally presented a fault diagnosis, but again only when the ICM, on just one cylinder, decides to fail... Your persistence is admired...!

Dude you have more responsible policies than most of the dealership services :) ...he should do some heat protection on those modules they are placed on a worse possible spot.

I'm surprised you didn't use a heat gun on the control module. .

This is a reasonable thought, yes!

Why is there no heat sink for that module, considering it sits in the engine. Seems to be an odd place for something electronic.

Mike Foeher, most likely it was to reduce assembly time on the production line, ref already fitted to the engine/transmission. But yes, heatsink or cooling would be beneficial, though don't think it handles much current.

Looked like the OEM GM one had heat sinks...

no snow this year... you cant have a 'normal' winter mate with all those billions of acres of forest on fire around the globe.....somethings gotta give.....

I don't think it works like that, the northern California mountains have had a lot of snow aking with the usually colder areas of the northern US, where Ivan lives in Pennsylvania is far away from any fires, all along the east coast its been fairly mild, it's funny how people will complain when we have snow and complain when we don't, there truly is no pleasing some people.

@@Peter-pv8xx.....so you think all that additional heat and released CO2 is having no effect anywhere eh? Look up on Google how many billion acres are going up in smoke every year, this year's probably the worst ever with Australia's extra contribution......

This shows even the great ones that we tend to get complacent after a while, the young Ivan would have check to see if the coil was firing before swaping COP. it happens to the best of us. Good job still.

My guess is the module won't last awhile.....the reason it was used in one vehicle for 1 year.

  • @martyosborne3399

It looks like that module could use a heat sink on top of that bare GM metal surface...

It must startup in waste spark and probably batch fire because it hasn't synchronized the firing order yet. Or that's my guess.
