max martin biggest work till now. this song is so unique and yet so simple. there are these little details that make it great, like the little keyboard on the pre-chorus and the many synth layers throughout the chorus. i absolutely love that the whole song is based on only one sample of a man laughing (that cruchy effect used on it to make the bassline of the chorus is what heaven sounds like). this will be forever my ariana favourite.

Piyasa Mukherjee I’m not sure whether it is exactly someone laughing but there is some resemblance. You can hear the “ha ha” part he is referring to clearly at 3:04. It’s basically always there but distorted and pitched down in the verses.

That's because they don't lol. Partly kidding, some of them absolutely do. But given the writers/producers on this song, my educated guess is that the song was first written, and then produced. Many good pop songs do indeed begin from a track, and then later have people write a "top-line" over it, but I know Max and the writers signed to him prefer to begin with the song and produce after because it gives more freedom in the writing stage. If you try to write to a fully produced track, you are restricted to fit into that structure. If you begin with melody, you can pretty much do whatever you want. Then it's just a matter of making good songwriting decisions afterwards that fit and compliment the melody so everything balances itself out in a good way.

I always, always loved this song. It is a literal masterpiece of music magic that most people don't appreciate enough. There has never been another track produced as good as this one in this day and age. Yes, it's mostly all synths, but it's synths done beautifully. The melody lifts Ariana's voice to a higher level giving the full track that riding on a rocket feel. This is one of my all time favorite tracks due to both Max and Ariana.
