The area where the South Pacific World War II Museum will be constructed, was the site of the No.2 PT Boat base during World War II. It was also where torpedoes were serviced and made ready for delivery to ships, submarines and of course the PT boats prior to them heading off on patrol missions in the Pacific. I have always loved the sight of the PT boats at speed , ever since seeing the movie "PT109" as a kid. As an adult, I now realise how ineffective a weapon they were, using up 3 aircraft engines that could have been much more effectively used as such. The action that resulted in the PT109 being cut in half by a japanese destroyer is not atypical; 30 torpedos fired at enemy vessels , none hit home.

I believe that one Japanese sub was sunk near Guadalcanal by a torpedo fired by a PT boat
