Hose clamps - There had to be some in your video of the guy with about 2,000 tins of used bits and bobs all neatly sorted and labeled.
I've pretty much watch every EEVbolg video over the years, I don't recall any hose clamp videos.
You were right Dave. Wenger belongs to Victorinox. Wenger and Victorinox sold a lot of their pocket knifes at duty free shops at airports worldwide. After 9/11 small pocket knifes were forbidden and both companies lost a big portion of their sales volume (30% for Victorinox). Wenger went bankrupt and Victorinox could remain in the profit zone, but only just. Victorinox then bought the remains of Wenger and kept the brand and production site alive. In 2013 Victorinox announced that the brand Wenger will no longer be used for knifes. Instead they are now called Victorinox Delémont collection.
+fpm1979 thanks
Nice TI-83. That's still a perfectly usable calculator for some college calc/econ/stats courses. I have an old TI-86 and I hope it never dies... My favorite calculator.
Dave, you nailed it with the control room matrix (ie, "monitor matrix"): it's basically a monitor switching box, with a few added features (you were also correct with the Talkback function, which is also usually built into mixing consoles.) Recording studios, especially ones that work with bands and musicians, will test mixes through several different types of monitors to ensure that the mix sounds good on a wide range of speaker types. It's not uncommon to see a large set of monitors that cost $5k _each_, alongside the cheapest, shittiest speakers available. Somewhat ironically, the "cheap and shitty" speakers are often most representative of what the vast majority of actual listeners will end up listening to the recording on!
There are much nicer monitor matrix units available, but ultimately they're all just glorified speaker switchboxes.
+catdumpling It has a functional block diagram right on the top lid that Dave totally ignored. Sheesh!
Hi Dave! Paul from QikTag. No worries about opening late, poor marketing sort of failed QikTag, although quite a few electronic companies have ordered them as a dynamic business card slash keychain. The original idea is that the owner can set what information is shown on the linked page. Sometimes you wouldn't want to show your cell number, on house keys certainly not your address (as someone mentioned in the comments). A PCB is great material for this due to its durability. Cheers!
The fat piece of metal in the TI calc might also be to protect the rather fragile glass display in case the plastic housing is flexing... That would make sense.
Little hint to Emy. You need to clean your type on your typewriter. This will fix the ink filling in the center of the closed in letters like o.
I started to laugh at "hose clamp aficionados", but, damn, those are really nice hose clamps.
"These scissors have never gone sharp" Yeah, mine feel that way sometimes, too ;)
32:42 that hook blade is for opening clamshell packages - I'm a packaging science major
Directional audio cables, lots bull shit flows in one direction and and even more money flows in the other :-)
There's one application I can see for directional audio cables: Star grounding. You can shield an audio cable by grounding ONE side, and there are some opinions whether it's best to ground on the source or sink side.
Directional speaker cables though... I got nothin.
13:30 This is a bidirectional RF amplifier for cable TV and cable net (one wideband amp for downstream + cable TV, one narrow band amp for upstream, separated with directional coupler). One input (bidirectional, so it's an output also for the upstream), an output for the TV, and another output for the cable modem.
The blue blobs at the F connectors are probably HV ceramic caps for DC decoupling, not PTCs (I'm watching it at 480p, so cannot read the values).
Caran d'ache is a pretty decent thingy! I bought one, lasted 5years and no way it will break... Changed the ink about 6-7x, works as if it was new... Very nice thing of finest swiss engineering
Hey Dave! You probably wont see this, but anyhow, according to Victorinox, the "little flat head screwdriver" on the ruler section is also a single blade phillips driver! I use it ALL THE TIME on my Classic SD. It's very handy!
The names are Chinese, they put the last name first and the first name last; therefore Song, is their last names. That is not called a "flathead"Screwdriver, but a slotted screwdriver, for use on slotted screws, which are NOT all flathead screws.
I have a Leatherman Squirt and it is terrific. Everything the victorinox has but in a nicer compact package and as well it folds into a marvelous sized pliers plus my model has wire stripper/ cutter on the pliers. Great stuff.
That multimeter had a few components without any solder. The TO-92 looked like it had nothing, as did one of the caps.
Bob is NOT my uncle ffs
Nordost combats all of these losses by employing a “Micro Mono-Filament”
dielectric alternative. This technique allows wire to increase its VP (Velocity
Propagation) as much as 20%. The Mono-Filament is an extruded fluoropolymer
string-type material, helically wound around each signal wire at a predetermined.
I bet that booklet that went in the bin would have won a gobbledegook award.
Those hose clamps have been around for many decades and are generally intended for when removal without tools is required. I used to supply them in another life! Porton Down is the UK government and military scientific research establishment, for nuclear, weapons, electronics, biological, radiological, chemical etc. Probably the most secret place in the UK. A friend of mine works for a subcontractor that works there and despite his highest level security clearance, he still goes through the ringer every time he visits!
Funny I just turned your show on after being away for a while, and see you have a post card from Poulsbo Washington...they make the best breads there!!...I am just across the sound in Everett, WA...thanks for all the AC/DC enjoyment!! Johnne in Seattle - Everett and everywhere!!
A control room matrix is used to route line-level audio signals between various inputs and outputs. E.g., to route a mixing desk to alternate pairs of monitors (audio monitors, aka speakers); or switching between a computer audio system (recorded audio) and the main mixer outputs (live audio).
This seems like a simple task, but something like this really makes life easier. A mixing engineer would have multiple speakers -- e.g., one or more pairs for technical listening, plus another one or more pairs to see what it sounds like on smaller (consumer) speakers, etc. Notice also the mono switch, to make sure the stereo material can be combined without excess phase cancellation. The Dim (or attenuate) switch is a partial mute -- the "what did you say?" button.
This one also provides a handy talk-back mic and footswitch control so you can speak between sound-isolated control and performance rooms.
The processor in the TI-83 is a Z80-based SOC. Some TI graphing calculators have a Z8 Encore MPU in them.
The Control Room Matrix at 1:48 allows you to connect the audio mixer from your controller room to speakers in your studio and adjust the playback levels so your talent can hear themselves as well as use the button to talk to them intercom style.
*Allows them to hear themselves as well as other audio inputs they would need to hear.
23:30 audio decoder. It's a nice little product
Minichamp convert. Just bought today. Love the pen. Replaced tweezers with toothpick. Retired the Tinker for the present.
I like the use of the slang (and brand name) Texta-for an international audience!
Yes, Delta does make very good power supplies. I myself am a bit partial to Astec (which is now owned by Emerson).
Yes! Victorinox! My favorite too. :) My everyday carry (on a pouch on my belt) is a Swisstool RS. I can't live without the pliers / wire cutter.
Dave, you missed the big solder dropping inside the Multimeter case :D
It would be interesting to test some $40,000+ cables, While the $7000-10,000 cables may have been BS, that may be because they just didn't put enough money into them. A few thousand extra dollars into the audio cables is sure to enhance your listening experience. Best of all, you will feel as if a weight has been lifted as your wallet grows lighter and lighter with each additional audio cable.
OOO You got a Caran d'Ache? Lucky. Those are superb writing instruments. I am quite partial on their water soluble pigment pencils. Premier art suppliers.
Dave, if you miss the pen in the Vicorinox Mini Champ, you should get the Victorinox SwissCard Lite for your wallet. As well as the Pen it comes with, a 4 sided flat screwdriver with with 2 sides for philips heads, an LED torch with replaceable battery, a removable scissors, a Pin which is handy for reset switches, a letter opener sized knife, a tweezers, as well as magnifyijg glass, and a ruler molded into the plastic! Handiest tool I own.
I got a Victorinox watch recently. The best watch I have ever owned.
That multimeter would have been good to save for death by HV pulse supply.
Wohoo, our splitter made it :) Thank you for the teardown! 🎉
My Samson C-Control has an issue with the LED bar lights staying on.
A Control Room Matrix is to be able to switch from different input sources and select different output monitors so you can reference your mixes/masters. The "Speaker B" switch actually disables "Speaker A" when it is depressed so that you can only reference through one set of monitors or another. The Subwooder output is always active when selected. Quite a useful system.
I was close to buying one but then I realised how many people were saying it's a POS (and plenty of broken ones on ebay to back that up).
So I got a Behninger Xenyx Control 1. It's not excellently designed, but it still works perfectly and reliably.
28:09 I should make a compillation video of all the times Dave does that horse sound XD
Damn, got me thinking about getting one of these tiny Victorinox knives as well... I daily a Rucksack, and I believe you can figure out that it's not always very practical to have that huge thing slinged in my pocket, usually with my house keys too... even though I wear cargo pants most of the time.
But I gotta say that I'd find it hard to live without a good knife with a lockable blade.
Still have and actively use my old TI-89, pre "titanium" model. Did the firmware update to 2004 version some years back, as I recall. Sure, you can get by with those 83s and such, but why bother with it if you don't have to? I think the 89 is one of the last ones you can still program in assembly for as it comes out of the box. Processor is the same as some of the early Macs and other such PC gear from back in the day, or a version of it.
I like the T83... have one right here on my desk.. all the time.
Regarding the smart watch, the IC mounted on the display's flex cable is not an LCD controller; it's a capacitive touch controller -- this is super common construction found in many small form-factor displays. The LCD's electronics would be embedded close to the panel itself.
Also, Song is a family name, not a first name. Family names are often written first in many Asian cultures.
get a bit much sun there lately, Dave? Could be my color settings but the shade is distinctive
I think it is so Song may be the family name ... maybe they are related?
And the Samson may be what is used in a recording studio for the headphone feeds to the musicians ... the talkbalk button + mic would be used to talk to them from the control room
Dave you missed the big loose blob of solder in the bottom of the multimeter
26:26 Check out all those unsoldered pins for the transistor tester at the near corner of the board, and also the ones under the trimmer at the top! Looks like the leads of the TO-92 package on the right are mostly floating in the breeze as well. I'd be surprised if it even turned on!
2:24 … "I'm a bit of a MILF fanboy" …
+Markus Birth (mbirth) You perv! Those resistors are actually in a very sexy MELF package!
+Markus Birth (mbirth) Dave, always playing with his knob and talking about MELFs.

"For all your hose clamp aficionados"
I think that's my favourite so far
The plastic case of that splitter is the same style as Global Invacom's range of Loftboxes and other home RF distribution kit so I'd suspect they were the manufacturers.
Edit: The reason for all the screening and filtering is the cable signal uses frequencies that would cause interference with radio using these frequencies if it got out.
When ever I watch your video's two things happen: I laugh and learn something at the same time. Thank you for all the great work you do. Much appreciated.
I have that same smartwatch, but different name and brand, It is cheap but it does the job and works pretty well with my Android device. It can do calls and play music via bluetooth too
Dave,
I've always used the standard or medium size Swiss Army Knife. We have strict rules on knife carrying in Scotland so The Crocodile Dundee Knife is out of the question and in fact the large size
Swiss Army if blade over 3" illegal to carry outside the home in Scotland. For me the Mini champ is too small but I would use it as a backup knife. My other main Knife is specially made to be UK
legal and is American Made. I recently evaluated the Leatherman - I like the utility but the machining is a little bit crude vs the Swiss.
Always enjoy these uploads!
the cuticle pusher also works to open locks in desk draws
Those modules are MP3 boards, i have the smaller one, works great and cost $1.50 or so. Has build in amp, 2w or so.
The chipset is GPD2846A and 8pin chip is a amp, lm386 i think.
20:30 its probably an F and means Firma.. which is the german word for company
I'm thinking the alloy on the TI conger weights the battery weight, more stable when holding in your hand. A nice design touch for 1999 thinking.
The Unitymedia is not only a Splitter but also a two way Amp for DVB-C Broadband Internet and Interactive STBs.
Control Room Matrix is so that the producer can control monitor masters as well as communicate through the monitors to the live room.
The Samson unit is for controlling your studio monitor speaker(s) from your audio source. Theyre great for A/Bing the difference between several speaker desitnations.
This is an analogue only unit obviously but where the real power comes in is of you have multiple sound cards and digital sources you can switch between those sources and speakers. I use my PreSonus Central Station for such tasks.
The trick is getting one that doesn't colour the sound at all as this can greatly effect your sound design process and mastering of the audio.
This one looks like it would be handy for a couple of PCs and a single set of speakers or just using headphones.
For a second I thought someone had sent Dave a Linksys WRT54G...
hi, Caran d'ache is a very old trade mark for pen, pencil and "crayon de couleur".
I'm 64 old, and when I was a kid, I have a lot of this .... good time !
hey dave, atmel is being acquired by microchip. the deal is expected to be final some time this year
alu plate in the ti-83 could help the display to not break easily. i like the idea of a balanced calc which will improve fast drawing and speed up input in critical situations. but a stamped piece of steel would be much cheaper than a piece of alu which then is lightened again by drilling holes into it. so im thinking more stability than balance.
Can someone explain to me what would be wrong with a transistor tester?
Thumbs up for Sagan cameo at the end !
I'd love that Swiss penknife....superb in every way and beautiful design. If you cannot find a need for it, just send it my way! :-)
I pretty much only use German Rotring Pens. :3
Porton Down is near Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. It is synonymous with British military tech development..
At 13mins, that's probably a distribution amplifier.
27:36 "Don't mess it up Dave, just pull the red strip thingie" XD Damn, in case he was going to cut it open with the bush knife and get the room covered in recycled paper bits
the splitter is a signal booster
That Samson control room would go well with my Samson servo 300!
I just ordered for myself Victorinox Minichamp i just wanna to feel it :) Thx Dave !
Why? That multimeter might be good enough for measuring what is specified there. And some people might be looking for a multimeter that has a transistor tester. It also has switchable backlight and a beeper.
I see many people with Ti-83 calculators still. It still seems be a popular choice or hand me down.
Dave last i knew Victorinox and Wenger were owned by same family they just merged the too companies into one which is Victorinox today. Speaking of Swiss Knives I got an old Wenger my grandfather gave me he bought back in 1976 and its still works great to this day. Cant beat Swiss build quality.
Aww - hoping you would put the DMM on an EHT power source to see what it makes of 5KV etc
Just FYI Dave. Phono is generally used to describe an input with RIAA filtering applied to correct the frequency curve of a record player stylus. More correct would be Quarter inch Jack inputs :)
+The Bright Pixel In the US, yes. Elsewhere it's very common to refer to an RCA plug as a "phono plug" (or jack.)
I'm not American, and I'm not in the US, I'm an Aussie working all around the world as an AV integrator. He used the term RCA plug. He was referring to the quarter inch jack as a phono input. Phono, is short for phonograph. Phonographs use RIAA preamps.
Regardless, people still call RCAs "phono". Really common in Europe, for e.g. Argue all you'd like about the origin of the word, and whether it's appropriate. It's vernacular. Etymology seems to have little regard for literal accuracy.
Maybe in the video he verbally mixed up 1/4" and RCA. Wouldn't surprise me. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, there.
I'm not arguing about anything. All I did was said, constructively, to a technical guy, on a technical and educational channel, that the term phono is technically incorrect. Which it is. Take it or leave it. Every comment after that was other people arguing.
Ecdream Smartwatch $10.54 incl. shipping on Aliexpress.
Yeah, i got some of those audio players, They are essentially an mp3 player, they just read the usb or sd card and play the audio. They cost about $3AU.
+Bullfrogerwytsch do you have a link?
www.ebay.com.au/itm/MP3-Player-Audio-Decoding-Decoder-Module-Board-With-Micro-USB-Port-Reliable-/400881929757?hash=item5d566cce1d:g:PLcAAOSwBLlVACPs
Thanks mate!
Porton Down is a semi classified UK government base, basically.
I reviewed those smart watches on my channel. They're sold here in the Philippines by Cherry Mobile.
+Gadget Addict How much they exactly cost?
They work out to 20 USD for the LCD screen version and 40 USD for the LED screen version. But other than that and a different interface, they're basically identical and both include cameras. The cheapest non-branded bluetooth companion watch is the equivalent of 10 USD but doesn't include a camera.
"Yeah, that Victorinox Minichamp is so Dave's unicorn." - Deadpool
Everyone needs a shed, sheds are the best thing to have... :D
And "potter" just means to fiddle with things, make something, repair stuff, just doing little things to occupy the time, pottering about in the shed... :D
33:06 sorry but the Super Tinker is far better.
+Rinoa Super-Genius Leatherman Juice S2 - real full sized forged pliers and cutters and fits in my pocket nicely.
Dave is a professional Electronics Engineer.
Though the TIs aren't the best graphing calculators in the world the were the standard school room calculators here in the US due to a deal they had with most high school and colleges in the 90s and early 00s.
You really REALLY shouldn't write the address to the house your key goes to ON the keys themselves. Because if you drop your keys or have them stolen a malicious person suddenly knows which lock the key unlocks. So the tag-idea isn't that far off actually. You should include as little personal information that could be matched to you and your house on your keys without going trough a trusted 3rd party first.
Good to hear that you appreaciate Delta smps.
If you really want to mess with someone, you open their calculator and move the function buttons around. Evil!
Yeah, that book on The Shed is a parody of an old children's book series, meant to be read by adults. I've not read that particular one, but the ones I did read were disappointingly unfunny I found. Ah well.
And yeah, Porton Down is in England, not very far from me. As far as I'm aware much of the government stuff is being replaced with private sector companies, which are slowly being declassified. Correct me if I'm wrong, this info is perhaps third-hand. To potter about is a slang term meaning to hang around, basically - with the connotations being absent-minded wandering around a small area.
+Muzer0 Read it when I got home and quickly realised it was a parody! And yes, not that funny really.
+EEVblog pottering about means doing things but in a fairly aimless manner and with no real drive often in a shed or workshop.
+Muzer0 i believe the private sector science park is actually next door just outside the fence!, porton down is still MOD the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory you need mod security clearance to get in!
+EEVblog Some of the Ladybird books are mildly funny. The one on The Computer was 15 years ago. Not so much anymore. They don't really age well.
+BlackDuke07 Not that you need to be doing anything secret to be on list x. You do, however, have to go the whole hog with traceability.
Those things cost a hell of a lot more in Switzerland then they do in North America and Aus.
BTW Dave, Song Is the surname of the PSU designers. In China names tend to go surname then given name, though an easier way to tell is that surnames tend to be only 1 syllable.
Leatherman Juice S2 user here. I can't live without the pliers, and a real full size philips. Have never had any use for a nail file, cuticle whatever. Tweezers would be nice at times but I'd rather have the pliers.
Heheh... Victorinox Mini - a man's personal grooming kit. ;-)
Give you "bloody Casios any day of the week?" Real engineer use HP calculators.
Once you go RPN, you never go back.
Ti-83... ahh.. a standard in Dutch highschools.. or at least it was when I was in there... But it wasn't allowed on all tests, or sometimes you had to proof what you found out with the calculator.
Greetings from Czech Republic too! :)
All those FANS you have fit the channel theme!!!
The boards at 24:00 are MP3 decoding boards as expected. Here is a link to US Amazon where you can buy the one with USB stick reading capability.
