- Join me today as I'm dividing and planting bearded irises in the garden. I recently took some irises out of a spot that was overgrown and too shady, and now I'm dividing them and replanting them in better locations. I also share how to store them, and/or pot them up to grow them on. Come with me!

I dug some Iris rhizomes one year and forgot to plant them. They planted themselves right were I had laid them, they are resilient little buggers! 🌸💚🙃
True, they can withstand a lot of abuse!
Just starting my Iris garden, very informative & helpful for a starter. Thanks.
Iris are one of my favorites in the Garden. Great video full of so much useful info 😊
Thanks for watching!
Timely info, I have alot to divide this fall. I didn't know that the top of the rhizome should show! Thanks for your time, the neighbors' noise didn't bother me. 😻
Thanks for watching!
Wow! Those are some massive rhizomes. They must have been in the ground for years. I love reblooming irises! Mine have never gotten that large. I’m in Southern California in zone 10a.
I left some iris rhizomes on my lawn for the entire summer last year. They were gifted to me, and I had no idea where to put them, so I just left them on the lawn. No pot. Just the rhizome clumps. Finally got around to dividing them up in the fall. Planted them all and didn't have much for expectations due to my neglect. They all grew lovely this year, bloomed. Iris are super resilient.
Yes, they are so resilient! That sounds awesome!
very, very helpful - thank you! It's late Sept in Wisconsin, and I'm thinning a 3-yr old bed of many, many gifted iris I plopped down in a thick bed of leaves (not knowing any better at the time...!) But they definitely are not any worse for wear. And the deer leave them alone!
Jenny you would know when you find an iris bore, they are like a big larvae that has bored inside the rhizome of the plant....(that area is usually called the "toe" by iris growers) When you find an iris bore all you need to do is cut it out and kill it and that will save the rest of the plant. Another thing is that sometimes on the older toes you could have a node developing that would be another flower, if you throw them in the compost you might have some new growth for a surprise in the compost bin. lol
Thank you for the info!!!! I love learning new stuff from commenters!
I just recently found your channel Jenny, and I’m always so excited to see your new posts! Love your gardens and all your great information.. 👩🏻🌾🌻🪴
Thank you and welcome!
I am now IN ‘IT to WIN’it!
Very interesting. Learn something new every time. Never knew that some bloom twice a year. Thank you 🌻
Thanks for watching!
They do look like lobsters!! They are confusing plants to figure out how to divide but this was great info, very detailed- thanks!
🦞. :-).
I have been watching all your videos! Glad to have found you & thanks for great informative videos. Want to have beautiful landscape in my yard in East Tennessee!
Hello and welcome! Thanks for watching!
Perfect Jenny, just ordered some Iris for the first time. Very informative..😘
Thanks!
Such a great video.💚
Thank you!
Thanks Jenny . Now I know why my irises I transplanted last year haven't bloomed 😣
Should be fixable, just make sure the rhizomes get some sun.
Awesome teaching video helps alot
Glad it was helpful!
This was very informative, Jenny.
I've avoided tall bearded iris because I don't particularly care for their blooms. I have lots of Siberian iris.
Maybe I'll give them another try and pick colors I want and not what the previous homeowner had. 😃
There are some really pretty ones out there, but I agree, being "stuck" with a prior homeowner's choices can be frustrating.
Thanks. Jenny. Now I know why my some of my iris didn't bloom. Mom grew iris and I love them.
Good luck!
My Gaura took several years to create the wispy shoots you mentioned. I have a "mis-fit" area for my plants behind my shed. I put plants there that aren't performing in my regular garden, but I just can't get rid of. Many times, they redeem themselves and just look wonderful. I've also cut flowers from this area, without impacting the look of the rest of my garden. Last year, I tested some Yarrow that I grew from seed. I was afraid they would be too tall for my regular garden, so I placed them here. They worked out just fine, so I can move them to my regular garden. It's a nice space to experiment with. Also, I can use the area to let plants overwinter if I don't yet have a place for them elsewhere.
Having a space like that is wonderful!!!!
Thanks for the tips! I enjoy your videos!👍
Thanks for watching!
HELLO LOVE IRIS WISH THEY WOULD BLOOM LONGER BUT i STILL PLANT THEM
True -they're definitely a short-lived plant, but I grow them anyway. You might try some of the reblooming type, to get more bang for the garden space and buck.
Well done! A good tutorial for sharing.
thanks for watching!
Oh yes totally need to sort mine out and start to divide soon 💕 wonderful video Jenny you’ve done a grand job 🌸💕🌸
Thanks! I have a lot more to do later this season, but for now, this is what I've gotten done. All in good time. :-)
Love your videos.
Thanks so much!
Great tutorial! I’m too shaded for irises, but found the process fascinating😊. Zone 3b 🇨🇦
Thanks for watching!
This is perfect timing! My variegated irises have borers. 😞 I decided to discard one entirety and the other two I am waiting for cooler weather to dig them up, inspect and replant. I definitely planted them too deep intially so this time I know how to plant them properly! Thanks for the info!
Happy to help! Good luck!
@@HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden1 tbsp hydrogen peroxide to 1 qt water will kill borers
Perfect timing! Thanks. Do you ever cut the long dangly roots a bit shorter?
I have, by accident. I had a very crowded clump that was basically planted in gravel. Most roots were under 2 inches after I ripped that thing under the ground. They’re all fine.
yes, I usually cut the roots between 4-6 " long before replanting.
Yes, you can, but over time I've come to leave them long if I can. They help anchor in the soil better if I've left longer leaf fans on them.
Learned something new today. Mine don’t bloom so well because they’re buried too deep. Thanks!
YW! good luck!
Thank you! Do rabbits eat irises?
Can you compost the old leaves and rhizomes?
Hi Jenny love your details! Is there a general rule on when and how to divide reblooming iris?
Hm, no idea. I'm just used to doing it when they look crowded.
My previous borer holes were larger and the rhizome gets softer, hopefully you won’t find a borer looking back at you, that usually brings a EEEEKKKKK scream to me.
I’m not usually grossed out by insects in larval stage but iris borer definitely deserves an EEEEKKK!
OH my, that would be so yucky!!!!
Thank you for this very informative video!
Question, someone dig up irises back in may about 3 weeks ago. The rhizomes have been sitting in a bucket in my yard (in Md). At this point should I store them and plant them and plant them later or just put them in the ground?
Thank you 🌷
Some roots are dry and some are moist.
I dug up my grandmother’s irises in July this past July and I want to plant them now in spring, but I open the box and there’s no green on them. Does this mean that they’re dead or is there a chance they’ll still come back? Thanks for your videos.
I'm not an iris expert, but I would day, try them! I'd soak them in some water for a couple hours first, then put them in soil and see what happens!
They do look like lobsters!!!! Every time I see iris I'm going to think lobsters now lol 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Thank you KINDLY for your ADVICE❤
Great lesson Jenny. Do you have any Siberian Iris? I divided mine a couple of years ago and all I'm getting is leaves.
Siberian iris' like to have more moist soil than the tall bearded so I would check that. Also the more sun the better, they don't like all shade. Hope this helps you.
@@teresakelley-waite7589 The iris gets afternoon sun and I keep it well watered. Maybe I'll try dividing it again. It flowered well there for years.
I don't have any Siberian, but sounds like Teresa is giving you good advice. Good luck!
Have you found it true that bearded iris won't bloom if it doesn't have 5 leaves? I've always heard that and have noticed any I have don't but the 5 leaved ones do bloom.
Hmm, I'm not sure... I haven't heard that and never looked at them to see. Now I will!
I’m confused, should we use bio tone or bulb tone? 🌸💚🙃
bio tone is better but any tone would do
I use Biotone because it focuses on root growth. Bulbtone would be fine, as woudl most other "tones", but the others have focus also on different aspects of plant health. Your choice, really.
Can you do a video specific to Reblooming Iris, divide, replanting etc. Is there any way to "hybridize" rebloomer? Thank you.
