Despite being a Corrie addict, and endlessly grateful to Eve for having this wonderful channel (which I watch everyday), I cannot find a single redeeming feature in any episode for the whole month of May 1998. It just seems that after the high of Deirdre's trial and fight for freedom, everything then goes downhill faster than Jim MacDonald off scaffolding. The Des-Samantha saga - "I'm pregnant, no I'm not, yes I am but I'm getting rid of it, no I'm not getting rid of it, maybe I was lying - but was that about the pregnancy or the termination, you have to guess" nearly made me scream. Why on earth didn't Des say, "ok, let's wait a few months, see what turns up, get a DNA test, and make plans from there on." Natalie could see Samantha was just playing games with Des to cause trouble between them and split them up. Des, for all his experience with women, was seemingly blind to it! And as for dopey Nick Tilsley's obsession with Darren Whateley, putting his wife in serious danger - all because he wanted to know 'why'. WHY!! Yet when he's told responds with, "I don't believe you!" Aargh!
i know. it's just one misery-laden storyline to the next. from deidre, to zoe, to zoe's baby, to this and that. remember when corrie was light and comical, with only the occasional tragedy. when social interaction was the main focus of the programme. now it just seems like arguments or whining, or crying, with some deterministic trope to dig the character out of a plot hole; like jim's accident that brings the family back together, when it should his split apart years ago, and throw to the four corners of the earth. i'm always reminded of the shart tongues of hilda, bet and fred. the occasional warm show of love between hilda and stan; between len and rita, while having that bubbling subversive relationship with elsie tanner. there were the comical antics of fred gee and eddie yeats, and even mike's tyranny in the workplace would often show the happy spirit of the working classes. it seems they just shifted the focus from dialogue to drama, and dialogue is now all the poorer.

@@EveHenleySpread yes, it is a shame they didn't invest in the development of characters in the show. i just can't help but feel these characters (of the later 90s) are very one-dimensional. sally is so pathetic compared to when she first appeared. and gail was such a vivacious character before she married brian. but even there it's fair to say women change relatively once they are married and have children; and we have to remember this was still a fairly paternalistic society back then. even in the 80s, when they were bringing in new characters they still had several dimensions. like jack and vera. even though they had a volatile marriage, there were tendentious aspects to their characters; vera was loyal to her friends, but quick to anger. jack was brow-beaten and furtive yet thought he was god's gift to women; even though 99.99% of women wouldn't have touched him with a barge-pole. there just seem to be no joie de vivre in these later characters. i remember when when hilda first made vera's jaw, literally, drop, that had me chuckling quite a bit, from a single line of dialogue 😄 i don't dispute it must be hard to remain consistent in an ever-changing society, to reflect the good and the bad. but there seems to be that absence of charm, of characters and their relationships that would draw you and repel you depending on the circumstance. now (well, here in the later 90s) i just feel tense, or frustrated with much of the characters and how they deal with situations. it is, nevertheless, still interesting to look back on these episodes, and seen the relative decline of the show, and how this edifice started to crumble.
Like I said, I’m currently doing and Eastenders marathon from the very start and it’s pretty clear Julia Smith & Tony Holland (the creators) wanted to make it a far cry from what Corrie had become i.e. about real life issues, cot death, deadly attackers on the loose, AIDS etc. All that is fine, but it’s not what I personally want to watch from Corrie… I loved the fact it was almost a fantasy world fairly well removed from reality! He didn't want Zoe to get in trouble but I'm telling you she was out of control when Shannon passed away, she should have gotten locked up in a mental hospital or something to get help
@carasmith549 As I have stated 4 years and 9 months in the future Ashley tore Ken off several strips because he heard Ken Barlow was prepared to give Aiden Critchley the benefit of the doubt that he did not kill his missis Maxine. Did you ever see that episode? I know Ashley was grieving over Maxine death, but it is no good if the wrong person is sent to prison for Maxine's death. What Ken had been doing for Aiden Critchley which was standing by him when everyone was about to condemn Aiden was no different from what Ashley PEACKCOCK had been doing for Zoe. I reckon Ashley's upset over Maxine's death clouded Ashley's memory.
Yes that's right. But perhaps the difference was that Ashley was so-called "in love" with trashy Zoe, whereas Aiden (later on) was nothing to him. So Aiden got no mercy, whereas Ashley would pretty much forgive Zoe for lacing his cornflakes with strychnine.
@@carasmith549 The point you made I have noted. But I can't help thinking it boiled down to a case of Don't do as I do, do as you are told. Because Ken Barlow was willing to be charitable and give Aiden the benefit of the doubt that he did not kill Maxine Ashley banned Ken from coming to Maxine's funeral which I thought was a bit much. 45 years earlier from February 2003 a person who murdered another person was hanged. The procedure was not Abolish until 1965. In February 1958 if a person had the evidence against them in a murder case and the man or women was innocent it was tough luck. The accused died. Therefor Ken did not want to see the wrong person go to prison. It would be no good to Ashley if Maxine's real murderer was roaming around up to no good.

I agree, but then I feel the same way about the Nick character with his over-long sleeves and weird arm gestures. He also has an incredibly gormless expression. Is Adam Rickett the worst actor ever to appear on Corrie? He has to be in the top five at least.
Strange that Gail coming face to face, unknowingly, with the man who completely changed her and her families lives was written as simple as it was. It could have been a big moment.
Zoe story line ,one week in hospital a person who is in crisis not long enough to start medication and to know if it was working,it shows how people become bullies towards people with mental health,The writers didnt do their homework on this story line.
If Hilda Ogden was present in the room with Leanne and Nick between 47:10 and 47:50 Hilda would say; "There was a time when people who committed murder were hanged."
I think the nicest thing you can say about Zoe is that she was totally unbearable. I mute most of her scenes, but for me it's almost a photo finish as to which is worse - her voice or her personality. Both are hell to sit through. Can't wait for her to leave.
Infantile storylines. Actors doing their best with badly contrived predictable scripts. Coronation street for a teenage audience leaves veteran viewers out in the cold, shaking their heads.
Did anyone feel upset when Zoe jumped in the canal? Or more like elated? in my case, the latter. I guess full credit needs to go to the actress, because I hate her as though she were real.
I find it hard to understand Ashley. Ashley feels sorry for Zoe when she loses it by setting fire to a Baby's pram. Yet about four years and nine months later Ashley has a right go at Ken when he was prepared to give Aiden Critchley the benefit of the doubt that Aiden did not kill Maxine. It wouldn't be proper justice for Ashley if the wrong person got done for Maxine's murder.
Oh my days - bring back the strong, confident and sassy Northern woman of the late 70’s and early 80’s. This current lot would have a nose bleed if they weren’t clinging to a man.
The short time I have seen Carolyn Pickles in Coronation Street she played a character exactly like Carolyn in Sons and Daughters which was cluey and knew what she wanted and did not want.
I love ❤️ it when jack is supposed to be hypnotised and he whining Vera up ! I wish Sam would understand she ruined her relationship with des and if Natalie does go to the football ⚽️ match with des so be it!
Zoe puting an act on, cpl days before she died zoe was moaning she cudnt be bothered with her, baby used to cry & zoe used to ignore her, ashley used to have to get up with baby in nite poor kid
Les Battersby is being very naughty. He shouldn't be visiting another womans house with flowers and chatting her up when he is married to somebody. This is what gives men a bad name with women.
My forth finger works overtime during these episodes, repeatedly tapping 10 seconds forward, you've got Jim the drunk, Zoe the misery, Ashley the saint, dozy Gary and judge Judy.
That's an irritating scene with Liz grilling him and trying to get airtight answers. I'm surprised he didn't end such a time-wasting conversation sooner. Mind you, she's extremely ignorant so the concept of there being no guarantees in medicine would be beyond her.
At the the point 11:57 I am surprised Samantha didn't jump down his throat knowing how Feisty she usually is because calling a female a wench is sexist.
I have no sympathy for Zoe here nor do I have any sympathy for Ashley either - he is way out of his depth’s with Zoe but is so blind to actually see it.
Between 36:38 and 36:58 I think it is awful the way Zoe is treating Ashley seeing as he is the only one giving Zoe the time of day when no-one else would have any time for her. Ashley was prepared to give Zoe another chance after setting fire to the pram.
i wonder if this was joannes froggatts natural accent back then, the voice she has now is very professional sounding like the woman on the vodafone voicemail

Between 5:34:01 and 5:34:07 Nick thinks Leanne is back with Janice and Les just because she and Nick have just had an argument. Nick needs to really search his conscience.
Poor Gary Mallet , I don't think Judy is being honest with him , her relationship with the arcade owner comes into question , is he the Father of her unborn child , good storyline
I wonder if Carolyn Pickles and Gwynneth Powell who played the headmistress Mrs. McKluskey in Grange Hill are cousins. I say that because they look like each other.
Ashley comes along to "rescue" Zoe and hold her in his arms, and meanwhile I wanted to see Gary throw her against the side of his house and then thrown into the back of a paddywagon.
I think we all know that there is background noise soundtrack playing in the Rovers scenes. However, i have noticed that there is a woman on the soundtrack with a sort of cackly, wheezy laugh, a cross between Betty and Vera. Almost every scene, like clockwork she can be heard there, cackling away. Once heard, you can't unhear it 😂😂😂

Between 4:03:58 and 4:04:57 this just serves Les Battersby right. Unfortunately some of Les's personality rubs of on his daughter Leanne. About sixteen and a quarter years later when Leanne falls for Yasmeen son Carl Nazir she uses her father Les's characteristic as an excuse to stop Leanne and Carl being a couple.
Between 2:04:17 and 2:05:45 Ashley has been pleading on Zoe's behalf with regards to taking the baby. Yet when Ashley got to hear about Ken trying to plead Aiden Critchley's case hence giving Aiden the benefit of the doubt that he did not murder Maxine, Ashley tore Ken off several strips, and in truth Aiden was innocent and had been neatly framed by that bastard Richard Hillman. Whereas in Zoe's case she actuallyn had done something wrong. She took Fiona's baby without her consent.
No dig at mental health! Just in general i didnt like zoe not an actress ive ever really been fond off. Also the female Officer in the salon with Fiona where do I recognise her from ? A young Nicola from emerdale.
At 3:57:40 the woman who opened the door to Les Battersby played DCI Kim REID in The Bill and later played the part of Alan Turner's lady-friend Shelley in Emmerdale. Her name is Carolyn Pickles. I must say she looks in good nick for 46. C.P. only looks 42.
LOL bit of a stupid line when the police asked Fiona if Steve was the father of Morgan (now missing, abducted by human garbage Zoe). Fiona's answer is, "No, he's one of you lot." As if "policeman" is a race.

I swear you are obsessed with this Ashley blaming ken in 2003 for defending Aiden Chritchley thing.
Oh my days - bring back the strong, confident and sassy Northern woman of the late 70’s and early 80’s. This current lot would have a nose bleed if they weren’t clinging to a man.
Jim feeling sorry for himself he's lucky he's alive . And Fred Elliott sounds like fog horn leg horn lol 😂😂😂
Coronation Street May 1st 1998 00:00 to 21:44 This is a point guide to let you know where each Corrie episode in May 1998 begins and ends.
Can't believe that "Zoe" is "Anna" from "Downton Abbey."
I know her character is a right vile tramp here
Jim: "wheeeeeze, gasp, splutter"
Liz and Steve:"Kevin??" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The short time I have seen Carolyn Pickles in Coronation Street she played a character exactly like Carolyn in Sons and Daughters which was cluey and knew what she wanted and did not want.
Vera reminds me of my step mother, but Vera is funnier and probably a nicer person irl 😂
Not sure about that. At least she didn't kill Jack's pigeons - I'd have stopped watching the show there and then if she had.
I love ❤️ it when jack is supposed to be hypnotised and he whining Vera up ! I wish Sam would understand she ruined her relationship with des and if Natalie does go to the football ⚽️ match with des so be it!
Sam appears to have become a sociopath. So no, she's not about understanding other people or consequences.
Loving ‘Lusty Jack’ 🥰🥰🥰
Zoey going the
Prisoner Cell Block
looks good
When is Zoey Sour ☹️ Doom Face Going To Sod Off
Zoe puting an act on, cpl days before she died zoe was moaning she cudnt be bothered with her, baby used to cry & zoe used to ignore her, ashley used to have to get up with baby in nite poor kid
Les Battersby is being very naughty. He shouldn't be visiting another womans house with flowers and chatting her up when he is married to somebody. This is what gives men a bad name with women.
Mind you, look who he's married to, I say, look who he's married to!!!
Les has no morals
No wonder being married to Janice she's a very horrible woman she looks like a bloke
My forth finger works overtime during these episodes, repeatedly tapping 10 seconds forward, you've got Jim the drunk, Zoe the misery, Ashley the saint, dozy Gary and judge Judy.
Between the points 1:14:05 and 1:14:16 that surgeon in the suit looks exactly like Patrick Troughton when he played the second Doctor Who.
That's an irritating scene with Liz grilling him and trying to get airtight answers. I'm surprised he didn't end such a time-wasting conversation sooner.
Mind you, she's extremely ignorant so the concept of there being no guarantees in medicine would be beyond her.
Zoey going for the prisoner cell block h look
It looks very circa 1987
council estate
im surprised nobody mentioned lizs makeover at around 3:00:54 her hair texture seems to have altered n the tight curls are gone from previous episodes
I think it is just her perm growing out lol
i know. she reminds me of crystal tips. and jim must be alister.
I guess the date of birth of the copper standing up at 4:09:39 is Thursday October 1st 1953.
?
Gin soaked audraaaaaaaa carnt stand her or her voice
5:20:41 One of those girls on the bikes looks very like Jennie McAlpine, who later played Fiz Brown.
Im thinking of going back to 1976, it's just one ridiculous story after another.
i wonder if this was joannes froggatts natural accent back then, the voice she has now is very professional sounding like the woman on the vodafone voicemail
Well she was young back then and voices change for some people you see :)
I think Joanna Froggatt was a great actress. She was just a horrible, unlikeable character in Corrie.
@@SuzyQ334 Yes she was a great actress,.. and she was in a drama called - The Street,..Episode Titled : "Sean And Yvonne". ..If you have not seen it,..It is really worth watching.Unfortunately it is not on youtube, although if you search for the video on Google, -It will direct you to it. (TH-cam will not allow me to give the name of the site on here,..It begins with D,..As in everyday)
She was in one episode of "Dinnerladies." She played a young girl on "work experience." It was incredibly funny!
Sam was prettier with dark hair
Between 5:34:01 and 5:34:07 Nick thinks Leanne is back with Janice and Les just because she and Nick have just had an argument. Nick needs to really search his conscience.
That might be impossible, he'd have to find his brain first.
6:27:40, where is the rain? It's apparently chucking it down but nobody is getting wet? 😂
At the point 4:55:10 what have you done Nick Tilsley. That is very irresponsible of Nick placing Leanne in danger like that.
"You want locking up you mad cow" should have thought of that when Judaaaay wanted her baby
Sick and tired of Zoe and Ashley. Stupid storyline.
Poor Gary Mallet , I don't think Judy is being honest with him , her relationship with the arcade owner comes into question , is he the Father of her unborn child , good storyline
She became pregnant months after she slept with her boss for the money
children* she has twins
@@ymarw1684exactly! Now she's a few month's pregnant
I wonder if Carolyn Pickles and Gwynneth Powell who played the headmistress Mrs. McKluskey in Grange Hill are cousins. I say that because they look like each other.
So fed up watching the tribulations of ALL those boring teenagers😢. So boring!!!
Agree 100%.
Between 5:10:40 and 5:10:42 even if Greg is talking business he could still keep his manners. Maxine is supposed to be his girl-friend.
I don't mind Natalie that much lately.
Why doesn't Leanne tell Janice what happened?
Ashley comes along to "rescue" Zoe and hold her in his arms, and meanwhile I wanted to see Gary throw her against the side of his house and then thrown into the back of a paddywagon.
I think we all know that there is background noise soundtrack playing in the Rovers scenes. However, i have noticed that there is a woman on the soundtrack with a sort of cackly, wheezy laugh, a cross between Betty and Vera. Almost every scene, like clockwork she can be heard there, cackling away. Once heard, you can't unhear it 😂😂😂
Haha, never noticed before. Read your comment just as she laughed. Good spotting.
Jim and liz😪
Is foetal alcohol syndrome unheard of in Britain?
yep we know it
Coronation Street May 4th 1998 44:39 to 1:07:44
Kevin was a bit insensitive can Sally get through the funeral before he discusses her money
Coronation Street May 6th 1998 1:07:45 to 1:30:37
Tuesday 5 November wednesday 6 November Thursday 7 November Friday 8 November Saturday 9 November Sunday 10 November Monday 11 November Tuesday 12 November
Coronation Street May 2nd 1998 21:45 to 44:38
Between 4:03:58 and 4:04:57 this just serves Les Battersby right. Unfortunately some of Les's personality rubs of on his daughter Leanne. About sixteen and a quarter years later when Leanne falls for Yasmeen son Carl Nazir she uses her father Les's characteristic as an excuse to stop Leanne and Carl being a couple.
I wish they could stop with the Kylie songs.
Looking back now you can see how people are manipulated by the TV Take That was done to death a while back.
@@angelapay3718 Yeah Take that were so overplayed.
I think Brian's killer looks like David Essex.
Snap! 😅
The same actor played a west country bloke in the
Cornish detective show Wycliffe
Between 2:04:17 and 2:05:45 Ashley has been pleading on Zoe's behalf with regards to taking the baby. Yet when Ashley got to hear about Ken trying to plead Aiden Critchley's case hence giving Aiden the benefit of the doubt that he did not murder Maxine, Ashley tore Ken off several strips, and in truth Aiden was innocent and had been neatly framed by that bastard Richard Hillman. Whereas in Zoe's case she actuallyn had done something wrong. She took Fiona's baby without her consent.
Chris or Des? Daddy boy
The whole Zoe storyline could have been great if it was done by decent actors and actresses.
What an absolute load of old 💩
Nick needs to get a job,
Lots of fast forward this month>>> boring Nick ,boring Jim.zzz.
Even the background music has become the three same repetitive boring songs. 🙄🙄
No dig at mental health! Just in general i didnt like zoe not an actress ive ever really been fond off. Also the female Officer in the salon with Fiona where do I recognise her from ? A young Nicola from emerdale.
At 3:46:53 Ashley was right to have a go at Nick. In the first place it's not polite to snatch.
Natalie, has anyone seen my ring, Sam, what does it look like, Natalie, well its plain gold. EVERY BLOKE IN THE STREET HAS SEEN THAT BROWN STAR/RING 😂
LOL bit of a stupid line when the police asked Fiona if Steve was the father of Morgan (now missing, abducted by human garbage Zoe). Fiona's answer is, "No, he's one of you lot." As if "policeman" is a race.
