Great job! I needed to find a way to describe this to some "higher ups" and couldn't find a way without getting too complicated and technical. This was super helpful.
remle ikawura if a system codec got messed up its because you messed it up klite keeps all current codec profiles the same but it does allow you to change them so maybe you hit something by accident and assumed it was klite that did it. o and if you set your default playback to higher than 44.1khz i believe it is will cause many games to crash because their codecs do not support anything higher
purekeynoob I've been using K-lite for close to 5 years on 3 different computers with AMD/Nvidia GPU's and I've never had anything crash due to a codec problem. If something crashes it almost ALWAYS because the game I'm playing is a wretched PC port in the first place and nothing to do with how my codecs are set up ;p
Techquickie I heard that using a VPN brings your speed up! Now my speed is fine at 30Mbps but 10 is kind of slow! Aleast that is what TH-cam user Tek Syndicate said ! bensemus x That is to bad about your internet speed being to so slow. what carrier are you on? just asking!
heres a question: what defines quality? what IS quality? just more pixels? how come a compressed video (500MB) is 1080p but an uncompressed (60GB) is also 1080p but with more quality? what IS that additonal quality?? ty!
lossy compression is the process of creating averages in the data. For example a video codec might notice that there's a lot of white behind Linus and as such decide that instead of storing the slight alterations in colour it'll store it in blocks of colour instead. This is why if you watch a DVD you'll notice slightly blocky skies. This has the advantage of being much smaller but the disadvantage of irreparably changing the data. Uncompressed or Losslessly compressed data stores the data without actually changing the output at all. In its simplest form, each pixel has a colour value in each frame and is saved one by one. Lossless compression codecs will compress the file in a similar way to how a Zip file does but that's a lot to explain in a TH-cam comment. Basically lossy compression actually removes data from the stream in a way its creators hope you won't notice. There's a lot of technology working to compress your videos - and its all based on what your human eye can't see, ie. Being as transparent as possible. Hope that helps!

Marcus Smith yeah. As a beta tester it wouldn't bother me. But when the public release is doing it as well its annoying sure. Hopefully they do.
Dang, Linus, you've been doing this a long time. Excellent explanation. I'd say keep up the great work, but, no need for that. That's just what you do, the way you role!
Codecs and containers are easily confused, for example .mp4 is usually associated with lossy video, but can also contain lossy AAC files as well as lossless compressed music files in the ALAC format: which is why it's usually changed to m4a.
What are the differences between different audio connections? optical vs analog vs hdmi etc. I am always very confused about the tradeoffs and the medium that offers the best quality.

Hi all. I'm confused about codecs. I want to upload video I've used my phone to record at 4k60fps with the H.264 codec. Phone video is variable frame rate which means I have to convert it to a constant frame rate. My editor gives me good, better, best options which are H.264, DNxHR, and UT Video respectively. DNxHR and UT Video are insanely huge but uncompressed. I'm wondering if there would be any difference in quality though going from H.264 to H.264? Then when it is time what should I export to? If I understand correctly TH-cam is going to use VP9 but does my export codec have any impact on end product on TH-cam? How do I balance this out because a 30 minute video with one of the larger codecs is roughly 500gb which with a 50mbps upload(fastest I can get) it will take almost a day. So short version is, when converting a 4k60fps H.264 video from VFR to CFR does using H.264 cause more loss or do I need a better codec? Whatever codec I used for conversion, what should I use to determine export codec after editing if my intent is 4k60fps uploading to TH-cam that will use VT9?
Soooo, if i want to record stuff, what codec should i use. I have an AMD graphic card and i mostly use the H.264 codec provided by AMD. I am confused :(
Oh and also, i have a HD7770 right now, i want to change to a nvidia card. But my budget only allow me to get a gtx760 at most. But i also want more rams. So should i get a gtx660ti with 2gb of rams or what??I want to play smooth on BF3 and planetside2 . Also, i am trying to save money for the games coming:) so not much budget.
Quarker If you didn't understand some of this and your a software engineer get a refund on that education asap m8. I'm just a arm-chair tech enthusiast but this all made perfect sense with even my very limited knowledge of audio and video.
***** I'm still a student, there's the first point. Only halfway through my degree. Most of what I've learned so far do not include the technicalities of multimedia. This video's still good, I'm not saying it isn't, but towards the end I started getting lost.
Quickie episode suggestion. Mice sensor types and dpi. I was recently wondering about the dpi mostly. At around 4k dpi that most gamer mice offer these days, 1cm of movement of the mouse gives you like 2000px movement of the cursor on the screen. That makes it impossible to operate so.... why go that high with the dpi? Is this just for the marketing?
I used to use K-Lite and always had a backup player in the form of KMPlayer, because K-Lite just doesn't work with everything. Then i switched to KMPlayer entirely since it worked better than K-Lite, but then they "evolved" and i had to get rid of it, and now i use GOM Player, so far so good. I didn't like VLC for a lot of reasons (not playback related)
so basically, with higher and higher video quality coming to a end within the next decade (getting as detailed as the human eye allows) and with videos remaining the same length in duration, as well as 5g around the corner we just have to wait for Moore's law to catch up to where lossless compression no longer becomes an issue, where net speeds can stream 60 gigs worth with ease, and hard drive space reaches into the hundreds of terabytes, is this correct, or will it ALWAYS be a "cat and mouse game" within a lifetimes (foreseeable) future? (now to 50 years from now?)
Just for an idea of how big these audio files can be, titanfall uses uncompressed audio for the PC version, the game is only 15GB while the audio is 35GB. So just the uncompressed audio is more than double the file size of everything else in the game.
Please explain the differences between 120htz TV's and 120htz Monitors. Advantages and disadvantages. But mainly, why advertised 120htz TV will only play 60htz when a computer is plugged in.
What about where there are fewer colours in the image particularly at darker ranges where it is so horrible and looks so bad. Like a sunset where the gradient change of colours throught the sky suddenly changes from each section to next with very noticable difference in colour between them raher than gradual. This is another form of compression I presume? What is that particular form of compression called? I'm guessing youtube uses it and that you cant change it by any chance even when uploading?! hah - I mean it is really bad sometimes. Why cant that type of compression be removed but keep the others? Or is it just with h.264 or whatever that you just get what you get and h264 is what it is and you cant change different parts of the compression or encode with some compression features but not others. I want hq 4k vids but this apparent youtube compression spoils them. Do they just use standard h264?
A hardware codec isn't just a DAC and ADC, though... You can get hardware Encoders and Decoders for all those compression standards you pointed out... I should know, I work in a team that writes drivers for a Video Decoder at my job. :P
Techquickie tell us about the ongoing revolution of HEVC/H.265 + x265 and how its processing power disadvantages are continuously being mitigated in the CPU-GPU world as we speak into possibly the best codec tradeoff so far.
A few questions for future vids. You mentioned that different codecs are better for different situations. Could you elaborate on that? Also, a very interesting problem I wanted to talk about. A lot of players (VLC included) offer slower playback options, but their options only read their media in 24fps. When using my GoPro at, say, 120fps, this is really frustrating. Is there some way to get a media player to play in slo-mo using the full 120fps data? Everything I've tried (WMP, VLC, HP Video, etc) can't seem to do it. Thanks!
Thanks for this vid I really need this for a little explanation but can you do some indepth and more explanation on this subject really need to know a lot more info.
Well I actually have a problem: I bought a NAS and transfere all my pictures, music and movies on to it. But I am not able to use it on my Panasonic Viera TV! It detect the NAS, but not a single file, picture or video that I have on it. I was on costumer suport with Panasonic for some time exhaning some like 8 e-mails. Befor they cind of just said. I have "wrong codec" on all the stuff I put on my NAS. So the TV does not suport it. So, can I change codec and / or can I some how fix this in any way? Please help he with this.
If you sent a file that is formatted using one codec, and sent it to another computer without that codec , is it that the second computer can't read it without the same codec?
@@simulping4371 Yes, thats even good but one need to set it manually using Windows Environment feature to add it as an environment value and that's how it's a bit complicated!
@@watchowlgaming5686 the installation is actually really easy (you're not even installing it) the hardest part is to remember every parameters for each different codecs
@@watchowlgaming5686 once you get used to it its really easy though ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -crf 26 -movflags +faststart -c:a libfdk_aac -b:a 80K -profile:a aac_he_v2 output.mp4
surprised linus didnt mention GOM player, after VLC. For some reason, movies look better on GOM player, than VLC (which makes no sense to me since VLC is streaming). Anyone, what's best place for GOM player codec pack?
CCCP codec pack is in every way superior to VLC. Customized MPC-HC is the best media player there is. It just takes some effort to get everything work properly. For people who are interested, Google "MPC HC advanced setup guide" and follow the AV Science Forum suggestion.
Ok, great, but I was looking for info on the different codecs themselves and when to use what and the differences. Make a video on that please. For people who want to convert and render things.
Okay, I have a question. What are these Codex things you see on pirating sites??? I don't use them, or pirate at all for that matter, I'm just very curious as to what these "Codex" things do. Is it full software, or just some type of launcher thing. Plz reply. :D
So when i play a bluray ripped .avi file, the resolution is quite good, but its kinda choppy and not synced with the audio, is it my player or is the video file just bad?
If you try to play the file on multiple players and get the same results it's probably not the player. Try VLC, MPC-HC, and another one like Potplayer. It could be the vid file is bad or not synced properly. Or it might be your computer is not powerful enough to play the file. If the file uses a more cpu/graphic intensive codec, like H.264, that can cause choppy playback if your pc isn't up to snuff. You can use a program like MediaInfo to find out what codecs the file contains.
The few drawbacks i have seen with vlc is. No .wav support... wtf is the use for that one anyways? Seems to only be used for 8 bit or 16 bit audio, and last time i had one it was a pain in the ass to convert. Cant play gif files... dunno why. Wmp does both of thesw though and this where i use it.
LOVE YOU LINUS! also tell hotspot shield it just got a new friend since now i can take full advantage of netflix! love them! cheap too! best around!.... now you wont see me for at least a year got that much to watch!
Ya K-lite is much better maintained and updated then the other two and they have made it easier to install newer packs over older ones now with the quick upgrade (without losing all your settings like before). I mean they have had like two major updates and 2 minor ones over the last two months alone where CCCP/VLC can go months without an update. If you always want the latest and greatest up to date codecs in one place K-lite is my personal preference.
2:10 The technology exists! It just hasn't been widely adopted yet. Unfortunately by the time we can finally start streaming lossless 1080p people will probably need 4K and beyond, which will force us to go back to compression again.
9 years later and this video is still relevant and helpful

The difference is in lossy compression, think of it like chopping of more or less parts of the clip.
There is a video on computerphile's channel if you want a good explanation. It's actually quite interesting
it has a higher bit rate
lossy compression is the process of creating averages in the data. Nice, simple, and informative video!
At least this video was not just an advertisement for Cooler Master...
Low-level programming as fast as possible
I'm not sure that people who need Techquickie would even understand what programming is

Great Sponsor transition
Is it possible to shrink a video file to ultra small size so i can store more movies in my 500gb hdd???

Install GOM Player instead of VLC, upvote this after testing. It's the best media player out there, no doubt about it.
I don't think GOM is catching up the mainstream media players. VLC appears to be the best in terms of reliability and user-experience.

So should i get a gtx660ti with 2gb of rams or what??I want to play smooth on BF3 and planetside2 . Also, i am trying to save money for the games coming:) so not much budget.
Alan Resnick has another video on TH-cam that might help answer your question.
Dear Techquickie, can u please explain the differences between modem and routers? and what good use are wireless/wired modems/routers?
1:44
The breaths are real.
This is way to advanced for tech quickie, though it was meant to explain more simply
-_-
Same here, some of these explanations are over my head and I'm a software engineering student.
I didn't like VLC for a lot of reasons (not playback related)
most contain bloatware and malware. be careful
Wow nicely done Linus! Love TechQuicke and would love to see more content from it!

so basically, with higher and higher video quality coming to a end within the next decade (getting as detailed as the human eye allows) and with videos remaining the same length in duration, as well as 5g around the corner we just have to wait for Moore's law to catch up to where lossless compression no longer becomes an issue, where net speeds can stream 60 gigs worth with ease, and hard drive space reaches into the hundreds of terabytes, is this correct, or will it ALWAYS be a "cat and mouse game" within a lifetimes (foreseeable) future? (now to 50 years from now?)
2:30 woa wait their CPU heavy??? i was under the impression that we use them for proxy editing because they aren't.
Loved It linus! Now I can show this to my wife when a certain file(her movie or show) won't stream or play on her N7
what about klite codec pack? I've been using that codec pack since forever
One of the best media players is potplayer , i find it better than the other options with its rich features and ease of use .
Linus can you give us a rundown on how the different color switches on keyboards work?
Hey Linus,
Can you explain what sound cards do and when you need to get one?
creative
Thanks!
th-cam.com/video/rbv3dgUIz94/w-d-xo.html
Nearly every file format is a container.
Even a mp3 can store data like the track name, album cover or artist
You saying I can embed .rar files into an mp3 like I can with jpegs?
Thank you very much of explaining this. Got a lot of things in mind.
waited 4 minutes, hoping you would recommend VLC &/or CCCP.
forever on my essetials-download list, for clean installs !
- love the show
Do all Codec types work with all wireless headphones or headsets?
Thanks for this vid I really need this for a little explanation but can you do some indepth and more explanation on this subject really need to know a lot more info.
I have always used K-lite codec pack, you get the choise if you want to install WMP classic and gives you alot of codecs.
What about if youtube videos are buffering slow and no problems with anything else besides youtube?
Well I actually have a problem: I bought a NAS and transfere all my pictures, music and movies on to it. But I am not able to use it on my Panasonic Viera TV! It detect the NAS, but not a single file, picture or video that I have on it. I was on costumer suport with Panasonic for some time exhaning some like 8 e-mails. Befor they cind of just said. I have "wrong codec" on all the stuff I put on my NAS. So the TV does not suport it.
So, can I change codec and / or can I some how fix this in any way?
Please help he with this.
Love CCCP, used it since Naruto 65.
this video would be better with an update
If you sent a file that is formatted using one codec, and sent it to another computer without that codec , is it that the second computer can't read it without the same codec?
nice, I've never really looked too deep into this stuff I just install cccp and don't worry about it.
*VLC* is perfect for playing any type of video and audio files!!!
And for video compression, *Handbrake* is the best!!!
handbrake is meh if you're a power user, chads use custom built ffmpeg
@@simulping4371 Yes, thats even good but one need to set it manually using Windows Environment feature to add it as an environment value and that's how it's a bit complicated!
@@watchowlgaming5686 the installation is actually really easy (you're not even installing it)
the hardest part is to remember every parameters for each different codecs
@@simulping4371 Yes, yes I actually want to say that, just mixed up the things!
@@watchowlgaming5686 once you get used to it its really easy though
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -crf 26 -movflags +faststart -c:a libfdk_aac -b:a 80K -profile:a aac_he_v2 output.mp4
Wow first time i actually liked a sponsor
surprised linus didnt mention GOM player, after VLC. For some reason, movies look better on GOM player, than VLC (which makes no sense to me since VLC is streaming). Anyone, what's best place for GOM player codec pack?
Hello, can you please make a video on H.265 aka HEVC?
CCCP codec pack is in every way superior to VLC. Customized MPC-HC is the best media player there is. It just takes some effort to get everything work properly. For people who are interested, Google "MPC HC advanced setup guide" and follow the AV Science Forum suggestion.
What is your opinion about KMPlayer? plz answer Linus
The only Codec (software) I use is to compress AVI files into waAAAAYYY smaller versions with unnoticeable quality difference. (useful for FRAPS)
What is the difference between CCCP and Klite?
lol I had to slow down the video speed in order to catch up on all the terms he's throwing at me. Great explanation regardless!
Plz reply. :D
good user, m.A.A.d internet just stay away from them.
19 .WAV song 28.4 gb,normal ?
i still got flac with total of 45gb(WAV+FLAC)
So when i play a bluray ripped .avi file, the resolution is quite good, but its kinda choppy and not synced with the audio, is it my player or is the video file just bad?
If you try to play the file on multiple players and get the same results it's probably not the player. Try VLC, MPC-HC, and another one like Potplayer.
It could be the vid file is bad or not synced properly. Or it might be your computer is not powerful enough to play the file. If the file uses a more cpu/graphic intensive codec, like H.264, that can cause choppy playback if your pc isn't up to snuff.
You can use a program like MediaInfo to find out what codecs the file contains.
lossless > opus > aac > mp3
Personally, I thought the K-Lite Mega Codec pack was better than the CCCP pack.
I just wanna know why there's a unicorn on the thumbnail. I guess I was clickbaited.
Thanks mini linus
LOVE YOU LINUS! also tell hotspot shield it just got a new friend since now i can take full advantage of netflix! love them! cheap too! best around!.... now you wont see me for at least a year got that much to watch!
Hey Linus,
Just wondering if I am able to download your video here so I can use in a public area? (By public I mean my school)
Cheers
Please make a video on x265 10 bit HEVC and why is it too hard to play on old smartphones
I prefer K-lite over VLC and CCCP.
If you always want the latest and greatest up to date codecs in one place K-lite is my personal preference.
devilmikey00 VLC updated like 3 times in as many months for me. Honestly that seems fine. Never had anything that doesn't run properly.
Awesome explanation. Thanks!

The technology exists! It just hasn't been widely adopted yet. Unfortunately by the time we can finally start streaming lossless 1080p people will probably need 4K and beyond, which will force us to go back to compression again.
