- This is my tying of the Iron Blue Nymph per Leisenring’s “The Art of Tying the Wet Fly”.
This pattern is #12 in his list of his 12 favorite flies.
12. Iron Blue Nymph:
Hook: 14, 15
Silk: crimson or Claret
Hackle: two turns short Cock Jackdaw throat
Tail: two or three soft white fibers tied short
Body: dark mole spun on crimson or claret silk with two or three turns of silk exposed at the tail.
Good reproduction of the original fly. What are modern hooks that you use to replace the original ones.
Hi Walter and thanks for watching and commenting. I like 3 major hooks that are available still. Tiemco 100 spbl, Mustad Heritage R50 and Daiichi 1550. The Tiemco and Daiichi have longer shanks for those patterns the choice between them could be about weight. The Mustad is a good all arounder. I have this winter tied up some of these traditional patterns on Fulling Mill barbless and Ribfly barbless hooks and I am sure they will fish great. Up eyes are a bit more challenging. I have some from Partridge that I got on ebay from Europe :(. That end of the market seems missing here in the US.
This has been a great series - valuable for honoring Leisenring and his extraordinary achievements, and for sharing patterns that still really work well! Many thanks for your efforts here!
Thank you very very much.
