    I'm really impressed that you did this video. Not long ago I was helping a young lad install our 25KW compressor and to check we had all three phases he whipped out what can only be described as a death-trap of a multimeter. It looked like something you'd buy at a discount store.
    Maybe you should do a video on what happens to the hand of an operator when a low safety rating meter explodes.

    8:00 in the US 3 phase is probably not run to residential areas, however in the Netherlands as far as I know every house is connected to a 3 phase cable.
    Most houses have just 1 phase connected though, but the option is there.

    Us Americans sure are behind on our power systems with most houses running 120 or 240 volt single phase. Where I live we run on 240 single phase for most of the equipment. Welder, lathe, air compressor, etc. However, the milling machine is 380 volt 3 phase and to get it working properly required one of those "phase converter" devices. At first we thought a dummy electric motor was going to be needed to generate the 3rd phase but thankfully the amp draw of the mill's 3 phase motor is low enough it wasn't needed.
    Yes, where I live we have a shop with a lathe and mill. No 3D milling machines but still has allowed me to make a few specialized devices. It's like a workshop from the 50s with newer non computerized equipment. Grandfather hates computers. When computers do get involved I'm the one who has to deal with the project as the resident "computer expert". Guess it fits since my PC system is hacked together from various pieces that include 2 laptops, LVDS drivers for laptop LCD displays, leftover desktop monitors, 2005 era APC UPS meant for a server, and a shitload of USB crap.

    I might have this wrong. But Tom said what caused the light to blow was a 3000 Amp surge. The bulbs already drawing the maximum current it needs at what ever voltage its on. Wouldn't it be better to state the voltage of the surge?

    Good video to watch, just want to comment that the 'The Ben Heck Show' logo, in the lower right corner occasionally overlaps the text bubble pop-ups, making the end of the lines unreadable, unless you turn off Annotations in the TH-cam player. Example, at about 9:00. Easy enough to fix, just make your pop-ups a little shorter.

    I expected: bleeder resistors, varistors, optocouplers, thermistors, fuses, suppression diodes, etc...
    I got: industrial power protection.
    This video is essentially about hiring a bouncer to keep people from getting too close to your circuit, and while that would certainly protect the circuit, in a way, its not really what I think about when I think of circuit protection.

    Ben, it's a bit disappointing to see you only expect US viewers. Unlike the US here in West Europe (Netherlands) we have a more efficient network with 3-fase to almost every home. Not all houses have it connected beyond the master fuse but it's there. It's for example widely used to run ceramic or induction cooking plates. So it's pretty easy to come across.

      +parasBanaani Here in Germany you always get three phase 230/400v. I'm an electrician and have only once seen a very old house with just one phase.

    • @TheStiepen
      @TheStiepen 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +parasBanaani exactly same here in Germany. in fact, your average kitchen cooker runs on three phase

    • @TheStiepen
      @TheStiepen 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +vaxbuster we have 230v per phase (400v inbetween phases) and each home usually has a 60A fuse per phase. regular breakers are 16A resulting in 3.5kW you can pull from a regular socket. and if you don't believe me, I can take a picture of our post-power meter main fuses (there is one for each phase)

    • @TheStiepen
      @TheStiepen 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    In Germany every home has a three phase supply in the kitchen.. It's used for the stove/oven. Don't you have that in the USA? How do you provide enough energy for the oven? oO I think US homes also have three phase supplies and Ben doesn't know it, because he's never seen a kitchen from the inside. :D :P

    • @pamdemonia
      @pamdemonia 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      USA residential is generally 240V center-tapped to make two 120V legs (often incorrectly called "phases" by people here). Using both legs = 240V for driers, heaters and stoves, although all three of those things are also commonly run on gas, which means only 120V needed for pilot lights, etc.
      I know this is really late, but I'm an electrician, and figured someone in the future might need to know this info!

    "3 phase isnt run to residential" WTF? my whole country runs on 3 phase, my house is the only one in 2sqr/km still running mono phase and i feel like i am living in 80th for that... in US you all run mono phase? damn...

    • @Hobypyrocom

      *****
      nice, here everything (washing machines, electrical heating, electric motors...) is 3 phase 240V... you can barely find 2 phase device and even i am using 2 phase devices i cant put like stove, heater and water heater at once, they will all under perform (since i am running all of them on single phase) if i install 3 phase i would be able to... so that i can have electricity the electrical engineers took one phase from the 3 phase line and one solid ground...

      yeah i know its strange :( electrical engineers installed the electricity in my house, i dont have problems at all (for now) :)

    • @network_king
      @network_king 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +IamIUareU US is primarily single phase, although i'd call it two phase, but that don't exist that I know of. We have two hot 120 lines and a neutral. If you want 240V you have to link the two 120 hot lines as they are out of phase so when one is high the other is low. I don't know for sure, but I think if you want 3 phase you also need another pole pig, but that could be something strange like a high leg setup.
      I knew someone owned a bakery for a time, had some industrial coffy machine that took 220. Building had proper outlet, but he plugged it in it blew the machine up. I guess he called someone in and they were like this is a high leg delta you only need 220 single phase.

    • @network_king
      @network_king 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Morpheus Stark I don't know it blew the entire unit, he said it fried some sort of control/motherboard thing which is probably more sensitive than a heater. Possible it was full of cheap caps too and they went a little beyond the limit and blew. I can't imagine a plug like that being interchangeable as usually even stuff with something that has a ground and something with just a neutral have different plugs. Possible it was a bad setup or because was older building they had just retro fit something to do something else.

    • @JohnEdwa
      @JohnEdwa 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +crazygermn Most of Europe uses what is known as "Schuko type F", it has two prongs, but the earth connection is on the side. The slim version is known as "Europlug", and is lacks earth connection, but it's for isolated (full plastic case for example) devices only.

    LOL In Germany having only 1 phase instead of 3 phase power in a house is considered a total failure. Operating an entire house on 1 phase power? LOL. Having 3 phases coming into your home is so much better... you can hook up your heating system to one phase and therefore protect it from "stupid shit" happening on the other phases etc.
