Welcome to The Sound Check where hosts Tommy & Blake react to the latest & greatest in music!
Today we're checking out: BABYMETAL - メタり!! (feat. Tom Morello) (OFFICIAL Live Music Video)
    Wikipedia States:
Babymetal (Japanese: ベビーメタル, Hepburn: Bebīmetaru) is a Japanese kawaii metal band consisting of Suzuka Nakamoto as "Su-metal", Moa Kikuchi as "Moametal" and Momoko Okazaki as "Momometal". The band is produced by Kobametal from the Amuse talent agency. Their vocals are backed by heavy metal instrumentation, performed by a group of session musicians known as the "Kami Band" at performances.
The band was formed in 2010, with the original lineup of Su-metal (vocal and dance), Moametal (scream and dance), and Yui Mizuno as "Yuimetal" (scream and dance), with the concept of creating a fusion of the heavy metal and Japanese idol genres. Originally a sub-unit of the Japanese idol group Sakura Gakuin, Babymetal became an independent act in 2013, following Nakamoto's departure from Sakura Gakuin.
Babymetal have released four studio albums since their inception: the first, Babymetal, came out in February 2014. Their second album Metal Resistance was released worldwide in April 2016. The group released their third album Metal Galaxy in October 2019. Their fourth album, The Other One, was released in March 2023. Babymetal has embarked on several tours, with a majority of their tour dates taking place outside of Asia.
In October 2018, Babymetal announced that Yui Mizuno had decided to leave the band due to poor health, following her absence from live performances since December 2017. After her departure, the band performed with one or more backup dancers at live performances. One of those dancers, Momoko Okazaki (a former member of Sakura Gakuin), joined Babymetal as the third core member in April 2023, under the stage name Momometal.

"Wasshoi! Wasshoi! Wasshoi! Wasshoi!“ Great reaction. The song title translates as 'Metali' (or 'Metari') which is a fusion of the words metal and matsuri (festival). The song is about a Metal Village holding a metal festival, so they have included all the matsuri shouts everybody would be calling out as encouragement to the people carrying heavy floats etc like "Sore, Sore", "Dokoisho" and "Wasshoi!".
They are inviting us all to dance - I am reliably informed there is something in the lyrics (Su sings it and it is in Momometal's kabuki theatre section) about we are all idiots or fools - the idiots who watch and the idiots who dance ... so as we're all here and we're all idiots why just watch, we may as well all dance.
The instrument you could hear throughout is a shamisen, a traditional Japanese 3 stringed instrument - nothing Indian in this song, it is all Japan. If you want to hear them doing an Indian/Bollywood style song check out 'Shanti Shanti Shanti' (find a live performance, not the official video - the editor overdid the kaleidoscope effects ... oh, not the Glastonbury live either, the BBC will block it and they completely messed up the audio on that one too).

    _Wasshoi wasshoi!_

Welcome back to BabyMetal's journey, it's been a while.
We got another banger for Japanese festival or any festival around, they performed this at the recent World Tour 2023 and getting the crowd going bonkers with this.
The live debut was at Apocrypha - Another One exclusive show prior to the track release last year, it was fun and totally unexpected, everyone was having a blast and even started with a Kami Band solo after a while without it.
There's a live proshot version at Summer Sonic Festival in Osaka released in the official summer sonic but it's heavily blocked, luckily we got this new version. You'll notice some slight difference between the live and the studio album with an official MV.
The song title is Metali!! (metal + matsuri, which is a Japanese festival) and you can hear it in the spoken section when MomoMetal is doing the Kabuki moves style.
Just so you know "wasshoi" is another shout used in Japanese festivals when men are carrying the shrine, similar to sore and soya in Megitsune and Karate. The traditional Japanese instrument you can hear in the beginning is a shamizen, also used in Megitsune.
I can totally see why they pick Tom Morello on this, the groove, the catchiness, the super energetic jump and those typical 90's vibes at funk or alternative metal live concerts.
    Next suggestion:
    - Road Of Resistance live in Japan official MV.
    - Megitsune official MV.
Thanks for sharing this and see you next time.🦊🤘🎸

Really fun reaction. Good comments, seemed very genuine. Good job with a fire performance. FYI: this is one mv that really kicks ass too. And if interested you get a much better view of Tom's work.

Hell yeah guys! Great reaction. The song, Metali, (Metal + Festival word mash in Japanese), kicks away restrictive traditions and gets all the boys and girls to have fun at a Metal Festival. Took place st the same NEX_FEST as your Kingslayer reaction.
    Other suggestions:
*Yava! (Fox Festivals 2017):* Band flex + Groovy Ska-metal.
*Akatsuki (Budokan 2014):* Love Ballad meets speed/power metal.
*Road of Resistance (Official Live):* Epic crowd control, Dragonforce co-wrote guitars.
*Headbanger (Legend 1997):* Title says it all, lol. The show is Su-metal’s 16th bday bash.

This was recorded at the NEX_FEST festival in Tokyo, hosted by Bring Me the Horizon. Babymetal performed all 4 nights and then went back each night to perform "Kingslayer" with BMTH (The best collab of 2020, but could not perform together until NEX_FEST). You definitely need to check out that live video from BMTH's channel if you haven't already.

You are correct it is a great song live ( being there ).
The energy is fantastic, and the fans are well hyped . The band whichever one it is east or west, Kamis is never underrated by the BabyMetal fans 😃

Thanks from Japan 有難う 💛。The title is a synthesized word from two words : "Metal" and "Matsuri" → Metali. The repetitive わっしょい "Wasshoi" is a call or yell used in Japanese Matsuri 祭 (festival) to stoke people's exhilaration and especially to encourage the power of guys who are carrying a heavy Mikoshi (神輿) on their shoulders that is a kind of a float in Western style festivals.
The audience did get low at every venue in the world, because no one can resist following our Queen's direction. 😄 (Then they jump up from crouching posture like spring ejectors after Momoko's "Are you ready ?".)
Momometal's extravagant elocution and moves in Kabuki style and her growl gave an amazing accent in the exciting repetitiveness.
When it comes to BABYMETAL, everybody prefers live rendition to studio MV. If this video included cool instrumental intros by Western (American) Kami Band, which are played at every venue, it would be prefect. This song was one in the setlist in the 2023 North American tour (29 gigs) with Dethklok and EU/UK tour (20 gigs) and 7 gigs in Japan. I appreciate the devoted support by Chris, CJ, Anthony and Clint (and Ryan in NA tour).
If you want to know the deep meaning of the lyrics please check Professor Hartley's channel (Andrew Hartley).

Yes they added surprisingly for their World Tour 2023 this song to give their new third member a moment in the spotlight, she made the Kabuki Elements and she xan growl since she was taught 5 years after Yui and Moa.

It's not Indian music or musical instruments, but music using an instrument called Japanese shimisen.
