    Now that I’m back from the Lesco truck show, which was a blast, its time to get back to work on the Duke. First off, I wanted to move it to a better location to strip it down and prep for sandblasting. Once in place and put on blocks, I proceeded to start removing the old Dayton wheels, sometimes referred to as Chicago Wobblers. Now I’ve always called them wagon wheels and was never a really big fan as these were not typically seen on the fancier trucks back in the day. I agree now they look kinda old school cool and are tough as nails (you can haul way more with a steel Dayton than an aluminum budd) but I’ve always preferred the look of a polished 24.5 which is the plan for this truck. However, once I started tackling these I quickly became convinced I will never use them again as they were so rusted together it took me most of the day just to get 4 wheels off the spider hubs … I broke two sledgehammers and had to beat on the so bad I can barely lift my arms. I know the Duke in the movie had Daytons but these are the smaller 22.5’s and after what I went through I’m convinced that installing larger aluminum wheels is the way to go. Plus this is going to be more of a “Tribute” truck, where I plan to put my own spin on it verses an exact movie replica like I’m doing on #ProjectSnowman.
    Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for all the comments, suggestions, and support!
    Keep in mind, I know a little about a lot but not an expert in anything … just doing the best I can, learning as I go ... I do all my own stunts
    Enjoy watching the progress of this Kenworth K100 cabover project, a tribute to the one used in the movie High-Ballin’ with Jerry Reed, the ongoing Peterbilt 359 Little by Little restoration that started this channel and #ProjectSnowman a tribute truck to the one used in the 70’s trucking movie Smokey & the Bandit

    Mark, an easy way, and easy is a relative term, is to air down the tire to 20psi then use a tiger torch to heat the inner wheel. The rim is thinner and will expand faster than the hub. It works to at least break the rust but usually gets it off. A little tip for ya.

      @urlordSANDMAN 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Air expands when it's heated, so you definitely don't want to heat the rim with too much pressure in the tire and have it blow up in your face. But otherwise good advice 👍🏻

    • @hommie789
      @hommie789 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@urlordSANDMAN the amount of pressure you will introduce is very minimal. You are not turning the rim cherry, you only need 200-300 degrees temp. Deflating completely runs the chance of losing the bead. I have welded rims this exact way, there is no drama.

    The reason those rims are coming off hard is due to the rust. Those rims are tubeless, they are NOT as dangerous to air up then a aluminum wheels on you Peterbilt. Once again those other rims are tube type rims with a one ore two piece lock ring. Split rims were older yet. A Dayton Wheeler needs to come off evenly of its hub or it will wedge. If you think you had a hard time getting them off your KW. try removing a Budd (ball & seat) INSIDE wheel on the side of the road after having a flat tire with NO air of battery powered wrench. That's 20 nuts to remove & to replace if you can get them off. I promise you the truck that went by you while changing the tire will be 50 or 60 miles down the road by the time you lower your jack & put it back in your truck.Before tubeless tires a trucker HAD to CHANGE a flat tire on the road. within a matter of just a few miles the valve stem of the tube went into the rim wrecking the tube. go a few miles more the tire then would squeeze together so tight that the two beads were so close one couldn't get you fingers between it. If one still kept going then one had a pretty good chance of blowing the other tire that was beside the original tire that went flat. Those Dayton's were fine for the times other than the extra time taken to make sure they didn't wobble they were ok. If one painted the hub one color & the rim & spacer another color with maybe a chrome axle cap they even looked pretty nice. You need to remember very few trucks ran aluminum wheels on their drive axles back then. Now it's the norm.

      Zactly! And when I had to change drive tires on my truck with aluminum unimounts, they didn't want to come loose either.

    • @tangydiesel1886

      Agree, nothing unsafe with tubeless daytons. People see that and assume it's a split, when they're not. We don't have those rust issues due whatever reason. Just need a socket on a bar, and a medium size hammer. Take your time and tighten evenly going on, and check for wobble like you said. Much stronger design than buds, and maybe even flanges today.

    • @dieselgypsy1100
      @dieselgypsy1100 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I never had an issue with Dayton wheels as long as you were using the truck!
      Ran them on a logging truck with banded hubs and solid spacers. Only setup that would take the weight. (off highway) And relatively easy to change cause they didn't get time to get rusty! lol
      I had a set of aluminum Budd hub pilot wheels that the tire shop spent all afternoon trying to get them off!
      Daytons would have been welcome that day!

    Don't know if it will work or not but before you go to roll it into the shop, loosen the wedges a ways, rolling around loose may cause the wheels to free up and make for an easier disassembly than handling hubs, wheels and all as a unit.

    I have to agree about the tandems. I know a lot of guys chop an axle to save money on tires etc, for a toy. The tandems just make a truck look like a truck, and isn't a lot of the reason we pick our toys is for their looks. I can see a nice day cab single axle truck and appreciate it, but I'll never think it looks nearly as good as a tandem truck.

    My grandfather was a log truck driver for years and had 3 or 4 log trailers and I always helped him with maintaining them and his truck on the weekends doing tires, brakes, and such. All of the trailers had Daytons and we never had much trouble out of them. All our rims where the more modern single piece rims we always stayed away from split ring wheels. But once we got the wedges out they would almost fall off. A lot of that was probably do to the fact we live in southern Alabama in the states and it’s only has snowed once or twice in my life time so no road salt to speed up the rusting process. I have always loved the the old school look of Daytons. I can’t blame you for wanting to change them though after the fight they put up. Can’t wait to see this thing cruising down the road

    Mark when removing wedges loosen lugs and leave them on before you beat them with the hammer and you will hear them pop loose. Wedges can fly off and do some serious damage to you. Also when trying to get the rim loose beat the tires on the sidewall instead of the rims they will loosen a lot easier. Changed a lot of them in my day. Keep them vids coming.

    I started driving in the mid-70s. Trucks and trailers we had were all Daytons. Never had any problems with them but we never had them set around and get rusted on like that. They're great and a whole lot easier to change then the steel budd Wheels which required removing 20 nuts to get the inner wheel off. The 'nut' that held the inner wheel on was actually a hollow stud with threads on the inside and outside and a square head so you could tighten it up on the inner wheel. You put it on first tightened all 10 of them up, put the outer wheel on and the 10 nuts threaded over the hollow stud to hold it on. That's a pain in the ass. A lot of times even on one's that weren't Rusty the outer nut would seize to the hollow stud so both had to come off at the same time. We eventually got a truck with those budd wheels on and bought a fancy gear operated contraption that had the square headed socket inside the hex socket that fit over both at the same time and when you turned it it worked one against the other so the nut would come off the stud no problem. I could change an inner tire with Dayton Wheels a whole lot faster. And you can get the tubeless dayton wheels that are all one piece.

    I've guessed snowman would be 212"...that was a super common wheelbase on short hood conventionals then.

    first new K W I drove was a 1969 and it was 211 inch wheel base. bought one like iron duke the cab was listed as 82 inch on delivery papers, you bring back some good & bad memmories aka Datom wheels. had some on 65 Freightliner I bought from TIMT

    When I used to change those wheels I got so I would knock those wedges loose while the nuts were loose but still on the studs I have seen those wedges fly off like they were shot out of a cannon if your face or hands were in the way it might be a nasty hit, also try soaking the wheels with penetrating oil for a couple days sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't......great video as always I enjoy your sense of humor no matter what happens.....the struggle is real.

    Interesting! I've never seen a K100 with the trailer spike on the dash. Every one I've seen, including my own, are stuck on the side of the steering column. I like the way yours is mounted, I wish they would have put them all there.
    If you think that you had trouble with the wheels, wait till you have to start rebuilding that torsion bar suspension! Those things had about 1400 wearing parts!

    You really need to have someone donate to your shop, tire removal dolly. So you don’t hurt your back. Like what we have at the airlines.
    Of course you still have too bus the tire loose first.
    Only six more to go.
    And yes if I could find one.

    I feel your pain, last kenworth I had came with daytons and I immediately spent the money and got bud hubs. The Army still has some random pieces of equipment with daytons and I got real familiar with em and decided I hated them immediately, next truck Im gonna get WILL NOT have daytons cuz I refuse to deal with em. But if a particular truck catches my eye and has daytons I may sack up and deal with em. Another trick I used before the dayton disassemble was to SOAK the spider with kroil or pb the night before, learned that the hard way the first time. Hind sight is always 20/20

    Probably a good thing you're putting the RV on the side far away from the side entrance door, it would be closer than the house, wifey might not like that. Keep up the good work!

    Rust jacking between the wheel and hub. Ive had good luck by using a cutting torch, getting the tip up in their to melt the rust out. Then a thin coat of grease when it goes back together

  • @nummnuts22
    @nummnuts22 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've been using the old bottle jack trick for years taking rims off, even stubborn cars and pickups especially with aluminum rims. But I was with your friend and just pull the whole hub with tires, it's alot easier and could always slide them back on when you need to move it. I've just always taped and bagged the axles when cleaning up the frame.
    And FYI, yes I rather with in my old 77 but with health and finances it's a slow process. Working outside or winter doesn't help but for now I just have to wait till Thursday to watch you work on yours.

      Tried … bottle jack wouldn’t fit against the frame as the torsion bar suspension was in the way. Tried the porta power with an extension off the far frame rail and bent the ram … didn’t budge the wheels 😂

    • @nummnuts22
      @nummnuts22 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TwinStix I've bent a few portapower rams, even just spreading loose/unbolted frame rails to replace the cross supports. But PA quality only goes so far, the rest is driving time to replace the warranty tool.

    Those 'Daytons' are called 'Trilex' wheels here in the UK (and in Europe) and are an absolute PAIN. Imagine doing all that sh*t on the side of the road?
    As always what was thought of as a great idea of fewer lugnuts turned into a nightmare after 3 weeks on salty roads. Nut came off OK but wheels? NAHH 😂
    The Italians loved them and you could always tell an Italian truck as you could see the wheels wobbling out of true when you followed them.
    Still say lifting the cab off will make your life a whole lot easier inside the workshop Mark ...

    I know the feeling, I struggled with getting my daytons off a few days ago. You'll be shocked when you hear how easy they are. I learned that you can hit the top web with a hammer, and the wheel will pop right off. One hammer blow on the top web and that rim will pop right off. I read this on an internet message board after struggling like you did, trying to get them off. I was thinking of changing my dayton hubs, until I found out how expensive the parts were.

      When you say the top web where do you mean I'm from Australia and we use different terms for some things. I drive trucks with these tyre set ups and a few times it was a cnt getting them off so any knowledge to make it easier i like to know.

  • @bush600r2

    Important safety tip..... loosen wheel nuts right out but still on by a few threads then smack the cleats or wedges as you call them with a hammer till they pop loose, then remove. Unless you keen on maiming yourself or having a cleat lodged in your head. I think a few of us truckers were a little nervous watching that lol.
