I was just looking at a few Enfield rifles this weekend. The first shop I go to tends to have them in stock quite often, but they also tend to be quite pricey due to them getting better quality milsurp items. The other place had one I was thinking about getting. It was a No4 Mk1 in .303 and it looks fairly decent, but I wound up finding a really, really good deal on a matching numbers Romanian Tokarev with two magazines. I almost picked up a Chinese Tokarev that was chambered in 7.62x25 and had a complete conversion kit for 9mm instead, but I wound up sticking with the Romanian one due to the better overall quality and price. I also scored a couple of boxes of Romanian surplus 7.62x25 at one of my go to ammo shops.

That is a marvelous (sporterized) rifle for the purpose. (I haven't seen how it shoots yet). Not a big loss of value if the dear old girl get's scratched or dinged like a 'quality' commercial rifle, while displaying enough power to deal with most hunted game in the U. S.; most of North America. (No. Not Kodiak or Polar bear.) I have several in different conditions and they are not formal target rifles, but they are good enough to connect with game at normal ranges.
I must say I have a couple of collectable rifles and I frustratedly admit none of them have that early type cocking piece.
I do have a similar rifle that began life as a M94 (carbine) 6.5x55mm Swede. It has been sporterized to lighten it; it looks trim but not so nice it cannot be taken into the woods. Shoots the 6.5 Swede round which is suitable for anything deer or below and perhaps for elk if I get a good shot. Or most anything else. (I call it my 'anything' rifle.)
    Color me "approving".

I have no issues with sporterized military weapon. You should be able to do what you want to YOUR gun. I've taken military guns and reblued them because frankly, it makes them look great. But if you are looking for a good hunting rifle for a good price, and live near a military installation, check around the pawn shops between January and March. Transferring soldiers sometimes sell their guns to pawn shops because they can't take it with them. Worked for me.

The British army was in the process of replacing the Lee Enfield with a Mauser based rifle but then the First World War happened. The Springfield 1917 was the gun they were going to adopt I believe but in 303.

I think that the M1917 is an Enfield, not a Springfield.
