Melissa Sue Anderson AKA Mary Ingalls visits Walnut GroveCast to talk about her memories of Little House on the Prairie as well as her career. As you well know, I try to ask the hard questions and Melissa didn’t shy away from any of them! I can’t thank her enough for coming onto the show and I look forward to her returning one day. I hope you enjoy this interview!
We discuss so much such as:
What was Melissa’s audition like?
What was with her hair?
What car was she driving around in post-LHOTP?
What was it like working as Mary on the Little House set?
What’s next for Melissa?
A special thank you to Mike Purdy who hosts the website, www.melissasue... Check out his site!
She did such a great job portraying Mary.
I wasn't really a fan of the show overall, but I did like the Mary-Goes-Blind episodes and it's a shame she wasn't used very often afterward. It's like she got tossed aside. I don't blame Arngrim for leaving the series after Nellie became a wife and mother. There wasn't much for her to do after she grew up and became nicer.
One minute to discuss the 50th anniversary and her plans to attend or not and ten minutes dedicated to her dog. Other than the missed opportunities to explore more related to the reunion it was great to hear from her again. I totally understand her shy/introvert nature but I felt her portrayal of Mary was really awesome and very memorable considering the hard storylines she had.
I never invade anyones privacy but I wish she had come to the 50th reunion anniversary but I was raised not to get into other peoples😉😉business I did love her portrayal of Mary Ingles💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓
Ingalls
You're not a fan obviously.
She should have gone!!!
I think she had previous engagement
I think she probably doesn’t show up to the reunions because she did not endear herself to the cast and crew. About four or five of them have talked about her having a notorious prima Donna attitude. So she’s not going to give hugs and handshakes and hang out with a bunch of people when the experience of working with them was not particularly pleasant.
I made my daughters watch this when they were little and loved it! They are 29 and 32 now. They loved watching it at 10 and 12 years old.
They should NEVER redo Little House on the Prairie, EVER!!!!! I don't think it's necessary !!!
Bubby
I agree.
it is time to redo it!
Would be interested
No, it can't be redone!
Only one Wizard of Oz! Only one Little House series!
If it were up to me I would have had the movie The Wizard Of Oz produced in the 1970s, had a change in its script, and had an extra member added to the casting.
I would have had Katherine MacGregor (Mrs. Olsen) play the role of the evil witch of the east; sister to the wicked witch of the west.
The title of Melissa Sue Anderson’s book is called The Way I See It.
Melissa Sue Anderson has two children now a daughter named Piper and a son named Griffin.
My favorite episode of Little House On The Prairie is I’ll Be Waving As You Drive Away when Mary Ingalls went blind.
It's one of my favorite too.
I loved the story about the little dog she and her son rescued during the lockdowns. She just so happened to be there just like Laura and Mary were fated to be there for the bag of puppies in Remember Me. So many others have talked about her being the prima donna on the prairie but regardless of her personal issues no one could have played Mary’s sweetness and strength of character better than her. Plus, she’s the only actor in the cast (correct me if I’m wrong) to be married once and keep her marriage and she also has lots of good things to say about her husband and children. To me, that is WAY more important than being liked by your co-stars.
Not everyone choses divorce. Pretty shortsighted there.
Having one marriage and working at it to make it successful says more than people realize. It is surely not anything shortsighted!
@@Lionheart7190 Richard Nixon was only married once, does that excuse everything else? How about you mind your own business.
Not sure what her personal life has to do with anything, but yes, she was a brilliant actress. Had she not been cast on Little House, who knows, maybe she could have had Jodie Foster's career, we'll never know. It's her decision to attend a reunion, and there's no wrong answer.
Melissa Sue Anderson was perceived to be a little standoff-ish on the set. This was a result of a protective mom who seemed to hover. It's hard to blame Melissa as a child for this. As an adult, I am sure she is fine with the cast.
I guess that's why she didn't participate in the 50th reunion. Can you say "stuck up"? Forget the cast members, she should have been there for the fans.
@@greenwich1754 You don't really know why though do you? There could be serious reasons why she wasn't able to attend. And, as she said she's only been invited twice. Perhaps the big name there who doesn't like her won't put aside her feelings and gives an ultimatum if MSA attends. In that case, you would go with the bigger 'star'. That's just speculation too, but you have to give the benefit of the doubt unless you know for sure.
@@greenwich1754 Can you say Jealous? You sound like YOU are the jealous one
No, I can't. Jealous implies wanting what someone else has, or wishing you were that someone else. How about more like insulted. MSA did not have the class to attend a once in a life time event with fellow cast members - many who might not have much time left on this earth - on a show that made her a star. To me, this is a kick in the ass to fans who wanted to see her with the remaining cast. If she could not make it, she could have at least sent a pre-recorded video, or do a virtual participation. I mean, even Jonathan Gilbert (Willy) showed up, and as far as I know, he has had no association with any of the previous reunions, or interaction with cast members.@@kellymcfalls1458
@@kellymcfalls1458 good grief, jealous of what exactly?? And YOU sound like someone who doesn't know what they are talking about.
She wasn’t at the 50th reunion this weekend in Simi Valley. I’m confused as to why she wasn’t there as she seemed to be open to coming ? Obviously she wasn’t invited for some reason. She doesn’t seem to know why . This was an awkward, difficult to listen to interview. The communication doesn’t flow.
The reunion was in SIMI VALLEY , CALIFORNIA as that’s where it was filmed all those years in Big Sky Ranch . Mike Purdy should get his facts correct instead of making fun of Simi Valley . It had huge significance being held there . Hot air balloon?? What did that mean?? Very unprofessional comment.
I couldn't even finish the interview.
She doesnt seem to like talking about the show. And the Simi Valley reunion was too far away for her...
@@gwens547 yeah, because we don't have these things named planes in in 2024! SMH.
@@nightskylights4501 I'm guessing there's no major airport; from LAX you'd have to either take a commuter flight or rent a car, all for just one evening. And reunions are not for everyone. Some people, like myself, just eschew the whole concept; just leave things where they belong, in the past. Besides, more than half the cast and crew of the show are now deceased, and that can potentially be very depressing for some.
I’ve been to Simi Valley, California.
The best show / series rver done . If Netflix did it , you’d have pronouns etc . We aren’t living in the wholesome days anymore. This show is and always be one of the best shows ever done . The acting, actors, all perfect. It’s bittersweet. I have fond memories of watching this every day at 4:00 pm .
What are you talking about, pronouns? What Fox News has done to your brain is beyond tragic. I'm pretty sure MSA is not an ignorant bigot such as yourself.
I only found out about the books after the show began. They were considered reading for girls at the time. I had Famous Five, Willard Price's Adventure series and the Three Investigators books to keep me busy.
We also have a shih tzu that we adopted.
Is the young pioneers the 2 movies starring Linda Purl?...if so, they were both very good...
Like E.T. , little house on the prairie should never have a remake!! Not at all!!🤷♀️
As an interviewer, please try not to guess what she is trying to say and end up talking over her. Also, she sounds like a grouch. I am not a negative person but my Lord, could she have been a little upbeat?
She didn’t come off grouchy at all. A woman doesn’t have to be classically “bubbly” to be friendly. I think Melissa is very misunderstood. She’s shy and more introverted and clearly a little uncomfortable doing these interviews. It’s very obvious she doesn’t like being the center of attention. Just look how she opened up when he asked about her dog. She would have talked about that dog for 30 mins. Some people are more comfortable at home around their animals and immediate family than being the center of attention.
@@embeth446 thank you for your viewpoint. I can respect it and see where you are coming from. I just hope you are OK with my POV. Maybe I am projecting and needed to hear bubbly. She was may favorite when watching this show in the 70s and 80s while growing up. I wanted to be a part of that family in the worst way. Always dreamed of wearing the beautiful dresses, sitting for dinner with the family and having a community where everyone looked out for each other when push came to shove.
@@embeth446 Exactly!
@@embeth446 agreed
She is so cute 😉
That whole interview was just awkward. Not that you didn't do a good job asking questions, she just seems kinda in a different world.
He kept interrupting her. Super annoying.
That black wig she was forced to wear later on looked like shit. I thought "she's blind, why would she dye her hair - or have Adam do it?"😅😅😅😅
I don't remember her having a black wig? I do know that film over time makes the colors distort. Stefanie Powers has mentioned this numerous times how in reruns her hair looks darker and less red in Hart to Hart due to that.
@@trufan4fun That's what I thought at first, then M.S.A. said she cut her hair, the producers thought she looked hideous, and slapped this wig on her. It was a lot darker and a lot shorter - it was in her years at the blind school, the one that caught fire and Mrs Garvey broke the window with Mary's baby just to get out alive 🤣🤣🤣🤣 but died anyway. I'd hear about all this and think "what a wild show". I hardly ever watched it much because of the emphasis on family-friendly decency (I watched Norman Lear shows almost exclusively then). These days I look up the Arngrim episodes where she makes the most trouble and makes people want to hit her the most, although, all irony aside, I really liked the "I'll Be Waving as You Drive Away" episodes. MSA played that part beautifully, starting from her diagnosis, then hysteria when blindness set in, depression when she realized this is how she'll have to live the rest of her life. MSA really pulled it off.
@@farrellmcnulty909 I haven't watched it in many years but growing up I was a die hard fan and many scenes are blazed on my memory.
Does he ask men do many questions about their hair styles?
I know you're trying to inject some sort of statement, but if women didn't invest so much money in their hair, use their styles to make fashion statements, and enjoy talking/sharing styles with other women then it wouldn't be a talking point. Men aren't asked about their hairstyles because men don't really care about hair that much. If you want less questions about women's hair then get out and encourage women to stop caring about their hair so much.
Asking her about her hair length? Who cares
I heard she can be very difficult with the other cast member
Maybe she was a snot-rag 50 years ago, but give her credit for growing up and changing?
She was an introvert mostly thanks to her mother. Melissa Gilbert and Alison arngrim are huge extroverts so possibly their personalities just didn't match. I like the 3 of them
Yeah, I'm an introvert and I can tell you that I may really want to hang out with others but then I do and it's just horribly awkward and out of place. I feel more comfortable by myself. I've tried to outgrow it (in my 30s now) because I know my mom was the reason for my being introvert around others. I was sheltered and talking to anyone about anything was not allowed.
@@miamars90 I am extremely introverted! Being around other people and/or crowds just drains the life out of me. I absolutely love to be by myself. It's how I "recharge" my batteries. Not saying I don't ever do things with my friends occasionally but it probably doesn't help that I was an only child, when growing up. Lol.
This was not a good interview.
stutters a lot...
and?
No vs between Little House and Waltons. They were both wonderful shows.
Yes both were wonderful
💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓
Melissa, I enjoyed your acting so much. You were an essential part of Little House. Your book was interesting and insightful. Thank you❤
I wish he would have asked about her relationship,
with Melissa Gilbert on the show.
I wanted to hear her opinion, about their on-screen
friendship.
Per Alison Arngrim’s book, she said they got along but not close.
I saw another interview on you tube with Melissa Anderson where she addresses this. She said the other girls on set looked at her as a bit of a goody two shoes or a little uptight if I recall, but in reality she was just shy and more introverted than they were. Melissa Sue’s mom was on set a lot making sure she was ok. Her family was more traditional, not as “Hollywood,” and I think maybe she wasn’t able to bond with the Melissa Gilbert and Allison quite as well. So they got along but were not besties from how I understood it.
@@embeth446yea she seemed like she was more traditional I can see why she’d come off that way
Interesting interview with Melissa Sue Anderson. I found her to be open and engaging. I was disappointed with the interviewer that he did not ask more about her relationships then and now with cast members. When she was asked about the 50th year anniversary she answered a couple of questions and then he asked "what kind of dog do you have" and that led to a 5 to 10 minute conversation about dogs. Missed opportunity.
If yiu read all the biographies even hers.. the relationships do not appear to be overall great and frankly Melissa Gilbert and Alyson Ingram were nasty in their comments
@@pmtspmts8441 They were nasty?
Alison Arngrim*@@pmtspmts8441
She might have asked in a pre-interview what questions she did not want to be asked. Usually before an interview, producers or the person interviewing the person go over the questions, etc.
@@DNBursky Great point!
OMG I wish he would quit talking over her! I almost didn't finish listening to the interview!

I grew up
Watching little house and it was very interesting I loved it so much I watched it as Soon as I got home from school and I still watch it to this day when it comes on!!
There's definitely some bitterness and animosity between her and the others. It's not like she was busy and involved doing other acting work to miss the reunion. My guess this is another Maureen McCormick / Eve Plumb debacle.
Glad Michael Landon decided the Mary Ingalls should be a teacher for blind children. Also, glad Mary met and married
Adam Kendall.
I tell ya she was a knockout in Happy Birthday To Me, just saw that movie a few years ago. So as ugly as that Mustang was it would have been wild to recognize Mary Ingalls in her late teens or early twenties cruising down the highway or street in a Mustang. She should do the Simi Valley reunion now that Michael Landon, Victor French, later cast members like Shannen Doherty have now passed. All the surviving members of that show who are able to should be there to honor that landmark show unlike anything on tv anymore.
she has been to one of the reunions with a smaller group. i would like to see her and linwood interviewed. Maybe Dean should approach her with a taped interview of her and linwood taking little house memories. sometimes it is adapting your approach to the people you want to see in whatever format they are comfortable with.
always a class act. I really don't blame Melissa Sue Anderson not returning for the reunions. After she left the show, some of her co stars were so mean spirited in their interviews trashing Melissa Sue for acting like she thought she was better than the other cast mates. I think Melissa Sue Anderson was just more mature than her young cast mates and she knew when she was and wasn't appreciated. Melissa was my favorite character and looking back, she deserved Emmys' for some of her performances.
What interviews were that; when was MSA ever bashed? Plus, many actors came and went throughout the series.
I never got the answer is she going to 50th reunion?
She is NOT attending
Oh no 😢 does anyone know why? It’s weird not having her be there..seems sus
@@VHSRewindthank you for responding! I wish she had attended yet after your incredible interview.. she really just does not have the desire and I respect her choice
@@crystaldaley7850 The actress Charlotte who played Miss Beadle says that Melissa Anderson is a very private and shy person and doesn’t particularly enjoy being on stage or doing these fan events. And just as a side note, my own two cents, Allison and Melissa Gilbert considered themselves “besties” and I think Melissa A was sort of the odd man out so kind of makes sense she wouldn’t be as excited about the reunions.
@@embeth446 ahh makes sense! thanks so much!!
I don’t think ‘Little House’ should EVER EVER EVER be redone. EVER! PERIOD. I wouldn’t accept it. It’s best left alone.

I was simply stating an opinion. I know no one cares about my opinion but me. And that’s fine. Just like you are entitled to your opinion. No one cares about your opinion except you. That’s why it’s called an opinion. Everyone has one and is entitled as such.
The more I hear Melissa talk, the more I enjoy hearing her talk.
I imagine her dog may have passed by now. But it sounds like her dog was lucky to have been found by her and her family.
One of the best child actresses of all time, up there with Jodie Foster and Ron Howard. The episode where she woke up blind was just so well done; gut wrenching without being over the top. People in the industry felt the show held her back from getting meatier, edgier roles, and I can't say I disagree. I mean, no way would she have been chosen for something like Taxi Driver. But, I definitely don't think her talents were wasted nonetheless.
WHO CARES ABOUT HIS DOG! What a LOUSY interviewer !
She’s talking about her dog, btw. But yeah he’s a horrible interviewer.
she was not on GMA interview with Karen, Melissa and Allison..
that's because she's not doing the reunion in Simi Valley. It was about that.
She seems pretty clear little house is a past event and moved on I can’t blame her although I wish different
It wasn't a reunion interview, it was an interview about the event.
@@pmtspmts8441It’s HER choice (although she is missed) just like the Olsen twins not being on Fuller house!
This was a great show. This is what the youth should be watching. . . . none of the filth, demonic and satanic stuff that is going on now. We need to go back to the simple life. Get the government out of school and get religion back in school. Shalom
AMEN!!! Everything these days is so freaking Woke-oriented, etc. Makes me sick!!
Why has Melissa Sue Anderson NEVER/NOT ONCE been to a cast interview /Comic Com over the past 3 decades?
Because if you read the other cast members books you would know that she wasn't nice to them. They all talked about how mean she was.
She lives in Canada & not the US. She's also has a family with kids she's raising and a private life of her own.
That doesn't have anything to do with it at all. Do you think that planes, cars, trains don't exist?? LOLOLOL - What a stupid comment. LOLOL@@csrothlisberger852

It’s interesting that literally everyone from Melisa Gilbert on down, essentially says that melissa Sue Andersen is a terrible human. I’ve heard a very few people who are that universally disliked. That many people cannot be wrong.
I've never heard this said at all.
I met her at her book signing and she is a lovely, very sweet person
I found those comments to be very mean-girlish.
@@BerryBerry1465 Me either. I won’t believe it unless I hear for myself
Not one of them has ever said or implied that she's a terrible human. Please get your facts straight. She's just a shy, private person and there's nothing wrong with that.
She seems so normal and just down-to-earth, unlike Melissa Gilbert who just seems like a Hollywood weirdo.
She has a very nice speaking voice - would be very good as an audio book narrator.
Melissa Gilbert moved away from Hollywood years ago because she felt she had to do "Hollywood" like things botox, weight loss etc so she left. She has said so in interviews.
