    Great video!
    I am happy you brought this up. I am a BIG fan of Mizner myself.
    There's onlyone aspect that very very VERY few - if anyone I know of is talking about:
    You should REALLY check out Dan Hardens interpretation of 6 directions, heaven man earth and Microcosmic orbit.
    This just pushed my wing to a whole other level.
    Joined a seminar with him about a month ago - and it really filled a gap in both Wing and Tai chi.
    THeory is NOT new - but the way it's explained and how to develop the powers are very clear and easy to assimilate.
    Just one seminar just turned my wing 180. And when I say 180 - i mean: I didn't need to change anything - except just doing wing chun inversely!
    It's a mindF... You basically PULL everything in 6 direction, even pulling forward.
    If you haven't seen this - I really recommend it. I know Mizner is a fan too

    Thanks for the kind commentary on this video. Shifu Mizner and his students (I’m the guy in the grey shirt in the video) are definitely not used to people having nice things to say about us. In Tai Chi the elbow is very important, like every other joint in the body. The elbow has to be open and relaxed in general but correctly weighted so the shoulders can stay relaxed and low, and the upper and lower back can open, so forces can be evenly distributed throughout the system. Closing the elbow draws energy in, like closing the fist, concentrates the mind and strengthens the system where appropriate. Opening the elbow keeps forces on the outside so the opponent cannot enter the system and ends up floating around it. This type of opening and closing is very subtle, not much more than a thought and takes a long time to fully understand. In my own experience, daily practice of standing meditation over a period of years is the only way to develop this type of skill. Many people train the Tai Chi form for years and don't develop this state of deep relaxation in a very stable structure capable of very subtle yet profound movement, because they have not linked the system through standing practice or consistently tested the postures for flaws. Thanks for posting :)

    Wing chun and tai chi are for me the two most enjoyable arts to practice, and they complement each other really weirdly well. maybe the combination of linear and circular movement which is always fun to switch between to keep someone guessing (thinking of that time a guy switched from wing chun to bagua on me and I had no idea what to do lol) but when comparing chi sao in each, they both seem to pursue the same kind of structure protection and sensitivity. Great video. My take is that the Tai Chi' in Wing Chun is hidden in the first form. I would just humbly add that the mobility in WC differs from lineage to lineage. In the one that I practice (mainland Chinese) footwork hence mobility is fundamental in creating the angles to dominate your opponent. So yes, we don't go back but we angle a lot (forward) to avoid going back.
    Keep up the good work.

    I am taking the online course from Sifu Mizner and want to point out one thing. When you are saying - 8:05 - that force is being absorbed and thrown back, that is only partially correct and even that can be argued about.
    Based on the instructions you are given in the videos, if you are more relaxed than the opponent or partner, the force doesn't come through.
    Another thing that can happen is that the force is being sent down towards the foot as you mentioned but I think that Sifu Mizner's level is so high that he does the former and not the latter.
    The force that is being used to throw the other person is done by relaxing the muscles sequentially so that energy is released and then directed whenever it is desired. The force is generated from "the release of relaxing" and then directing that generation up to the arms, hands, and then to the opponent.

    • @BenCohenInternalWingChun
      @BenCohenInternalWingChun  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting. That may well be so. Sometimes I think it's hard to accurately describe what is happening internally because we a) don't have the language, and b) really can't say with 100% certainty.
      I don't think you can't sink anything or rebound force unless you are very relaxed so perhaps what I am talking about (rebounding) precedes what Mizner is doing. I'm always open to being wrong on these things.

    You're wrong when you talk about relaxation. Adam Mizner says it's body release and it's not physical relaxation. It's called "Song".
    You should watch all the interviews videos of Adam Mizner from Martial Man. Because a lot of the things you say is not accurate because you have an external interpretation of the art. Adam Mizner is not about physical technics, nor structure. Structure only help you to understand how to use the qi, but ultimately the internal force can be released no matter the structure or position of the body. Structure and technics are not taichi, but only help to understand taichi. True Taichi has no form at all.
    Wing Chun is completely external compared to Taichi. It uses external force 100%. And there is no other around it. The way Wing Chun practionner train is external.

      All arts can be practiced "externally" or "internally". It depends on where the practitioner is focused. Tai Chi is supposed to be 100% internal, but often isn't practiced that way. Wing Chun has internal origins, but it has morphed over time into a mostly external art.

  • @perrypelican9476
    @perrypelican9476 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wrestling type of tai chi? Very inaccurate. Mizner is very very advanced and talented and full of ability. Wing chun is an external style, while Mizner is doing an internal style called taiji chuan or tai chi chuan based on meditation and chi flow. In order to become effective using tai chi chuan, you must reject your muscular training and learn a very new and different way to move and strike. It takes years of daily training to get anywhere because you must learn to relax and focus and basically do everything differently. Yes years. But doesn't it take years to be effective with any martial art? The difference is that with boxing, you could learn, in one lesson, some cool ways to knock someone out and be able to do it. But in tai chi chuan, you need years to change your way of moving before even thinking about fighting. If you want to be able to do what Mizner does, you can't just watch his videos while practicing boxing or taekwondo. You must dedicate to his way of tai chi and be sure you are counteracting what he teaches with very counterproductive muscle development.

    • @BenCohenInternalWingChun
      @BenCohenInternalWingChun  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wing Chun and Tai Chi have a common ancestry so what you are saying is very inaccurate. Wing Chun can be practiced using internal skill, but it depends on the practitioner. Same goes for Tai Chi. I've seen a lot of "external" Tai Chi people.

    Looks like a load of horse shit to me. For some reason people are readily playing along for Mizner. The Wiggling Baldie, for instance, gives Mizner straight horizontal force, so Mizner pushes from underneath and "bang" -- the miracle starts to happen, the "wiggly dance" comes on. Now, each Taiji player (let alone Judoka etc.) would sense the upward force and start pushing from legs. Then the "magic" would stop happening immediately. But for some reason all the "opponents" chose to either give Mizner a very simple force to work with, or readily stiffen up for Mizner's recoil to unbalance them. Why are they doing that ? Beats me. Because they teach you to push with the whole body and to hide your centre as soon as you start doing Push Hands in Taiji. Very strange indeed.

    Adam is expressing his Qi skills. It isn’t in the forms because it is a separate practice, once developed, amplifies the forms function.
    Many “internal” arts had this training, and often was the primary training for the new students. When the teacher was satisfied with the level of their internal awareness, then they would teach them the martial art forms of their style, whether it was Wing Chuen, White Crane, Xing Yi, BaGua, or Emei 12 Zhang.
    Fate has caused the decline of this skill among many of the styles which used to teach this.
    Adam Mizner is not the only one teaching this skill. There are others who don’t teach it as openly as Adam. But far fewer than in the past.

    Wing Chun is an internal art. Those [most WC sifu's] who claim otherwise don't understand true Wing Chun. Wing Chun is more "wedge" than ball. Both Tai Chi & Wing Chun share many traits, but Tai Chi is more of a defensive "ball" [peaceful art]; whereas Wing Chun is meant to be direct.
    Most who teach either don't understand the many hidden applications: they use a hammer to pound a screw. Both require humility, faith, and contemplation.
    The Wooden Dummy form indicates Wing Chun is meant to utilize internal techniques such as pressure points and softness. Sadly, most practice WC with ego which defeats the purpose. The most important part of Wing Chun is "acceptance" of force. Pride prevents true Wing Chun AND Tai Chi.
    Fill the sail [flesh] with wind [chi]; for the unseen drives what is seen. Focus over force; energy over movement; specificity over power. Stop marveling over the limp sail and learn to gather what is within. Chi is Spirit. But Spirit must be mindfully directed by intention [mind]. The Spirit is the "wind" gathered in the sail [flesh], but the MIND is the TILL/RUDDER of the ship [vessel/body] which directs.
    Ip Man understood this truth. So did many Tai Chi masters. Movement RESULTS from intention. Empty force is meaningless, like a sail without wind. Look within, not without.
    However, one must have the Chi or proper energy to use it. A teacher cannot give what a student doesn't already possess. Each man has unique gifts [chi] which must be set in order. True internal martial arts are INTERNAL. Learn to wield oneself before "mastering" [dominating] others.
    Tai Chi is the art of the peaceful man. Wing Chun is the art of the few: the warrior. Both inform each other.

    yeah Adam M is amazing, testimony not just to the logistical end pt of bio-physio' aspect more so power innate in all humans yet inaccessible to most due as much to 'mindset' as lack of general practical knowledge. I have studied WC under various lineages, although when it comes to an equivalent of Adam then I would say the 'relaxed force' (Nim Tao) principle of 'Sigung Chu Shong Tin' and his key student Jim Fung are the most worthy equivalent.

      @@lionsden4563 I had to suss out your channel assuming you to be just another 'troll' trying to pick a fight so was surprised to find you have plenty of kudos regards to MMA. My advice to you is to suss out esoteric (internal) arts before you slag them off as you obviously have an extreme exoteric (external) martial art skillset (someone like Mike Tyson is an example of extreme exoteric mastery), although the full capacity of the human vehicle should not be underestimated when it comes to delving deeper than the egoic hyper analytical and competitive boundaries of mind. You could become an example of high 'balanced' achievement (exoteric and esoteric in harmony ultimate compassionate warrior) and overcome the macho insecure killer instinct which has been and still is responsible for the darkest side to our shared humanity. The beauty of martial arts is that as you advance you are able to truly become a pacifist i.e. you overcome your fear and hence your need to assert your dominance and competitive need to control others due to fear of not being in control of yourself. Our true nature is not fettered by ignorance and fear, it is formless and boundless. Peace to you!

      @@lionsden4563 ... ha ha well I'll give you one thing, the dude trying to give you his 'learned' take in this vid' has a killer 'stache, he could use that to effect as a psychological tactic to bemuse the opponent ;-) .that is a perfect 'stache kudos to him for man-grooming.. but that aside, you are missing my pt completely. I am 55 yrs of age well beyond my want to compete and test myself in martial arts. I can relate to MMA so don't get me wrong, it did not even exist in my early full contact sparring days of yore. Most of my martial arts has been 'striking' arts although I am also not stupid to wrestling having delved into Judo and the more brutal (non sport) side of wrestling and also short to long range (old school) weapons. So when I look at the pt's the 'stache dude is presenting it is clear he has never tango'd with anyone of significant 'esoteric' prowess as his analysis is very convoluted and caught up the ass of 'technique' whereas true internal power has nothing to do with technique i.e it is absolutely contrary to it ... it represents 'principle' geared expressions of total spontaneity which can be soft as a feather one mo' and like a hurricane the next (you cannot play chess with the wind). The only true way to facilitate and harness inner/esoteric power is to have surrendered all notions of self and that is not to say inner power does not occur prior to fully rediscovering that core presence, although it certainly cannot be reached by hyper-analytical exoteric breakdowns of power that is beyond the 'nuts & bolts' side to our humanity. Talk about fraud, this guy is fraudulently assessing esoteric principles he clearly has no experiential savvy with.
